A bill has been filed that would let all families apply for state dollars that could help pay for private school tuition, tutoring, and other education-related expenses. Colleen Crain has more.

Another bill filed has to do with which bathroom transgender individuals can use in certain public settings. Denham Springs Representative Roger Wilder’s proposed legislation would require individuals use the bathroom that align with their biological sex in bathrooms at schools, prisons, juvenile detention facilities and domestic violence shelters.

The Village 337, a civil rights organization, is demanding the release of an 11-year-old girl after the state dropped a first-degree murder charge against her. The minor was charged last November in the shooting death of 36-year-old Kameron Bedsole at a home in New Iberia. The child still faces an obstruction of justice charge and Vice President Angela Eaglin believes she should be released due to a lack of evidence….

The child’s brother and mother are also facing charges in connection with Bedsole’s death.

The House Transportation Committee has approved legislation that would prevent the state or local governments from placing restrictions on buying or selling gas powered vehicles. Two 17-year-olds were also arrested. One faces accessory after the fact to 2^nd degree murder and the the other, unauthorized use of a vehicle after taking the family vehicle from which the shootings occurred. 36-year-old Chelsea R Hyatt was also charged with obstruction of justice because authorities says she knew her daughter was in the car and did not report it.

A bill to get rid of vehicle inspection stickers in Louisiana will be heard in House Transportation today. Author of the bill, Stonewall Representative Larry Bagley  says they are simply a money grab.

Bagley says no other states in the south require break tags or inspection stickers, except for Texas which is phasing there’s out. Bagley. Commercial and student transportation vehicles would still be required to have inspection stickers.

David Cauthron, a former Addis police officer, pled guilty Monday to two counts of manslaughter related to a deadly car crash on New Year’s Eve in 2022. Cauthron slammed his unit into a vehicle with killing two teens and severely injuring a U-L Lafayette during a high-speed chase. West Baton Rouge District Attorney Tony Clayton says Cauthron’s actions and comments before the accident were critical in the case.

This will be Stonewall Representative Larry Bagley’s third attempt to eliminate break tags or vehicle inspection stickers in Louisiana. As for opposition, he says he’s gotten pushback from the owners of vehicle inspection sites and from state police.

The U-S Marshals task force says it arrested a wanted sex offender living in a hut near the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area in the Atchafalaya Basin. Authorities say 51-year-old Brian Schaller’s home was made from tree limbs, tarps and paracord and he was eating small game and rodents. He was wanted for sexual and oral sexual battery in Tangipahoa Parish.

Former Addis police officer David Cauthron has pled guilty to two counts of manslaughter for driving at a high rate of speed and slamming his police cruiser into another vehicle, killing two teenagers from Brusly High School on New Year’s Eve 2022. West Baton Rouge District Attorney Tony Clayton says Cauthron was reckless as he pursued a vehicle stolen from a family member.

Cauthron was sentenced to 32 years in prison, 22 of the years are suspended.
