A man who was slated to be the first death row inmate executed in Louisiana in 15 years has died. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Louisiana State Police responded to a fatal crash involving a Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol unit on U.S. Highway 84 near Cut-Off Road Saturday. Trooper Eddie Thomas says the crash resulted in the death of 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta.

Thomas says Winn was traveling east in 2022 Nissan Rogue and for reasons still under investigation, Winn’s vehicle turned left and collided with the Tahoe.

The first person who was to be executed in Louisiana in 15 years has died over the weekend. 81-year-old Christopher Sepulvado who spent more than 30 years on death row was scheduled to be executed by way of lethal gas on March 17th. Attorney General Liz Murrill said she had no plans of calling off the execution had Sepulvado lived.

In 1992, Sepulvado was convicted for the murder of his six-year-old stepson, Wesley Allen Mercer.

A weekend crash involving a Red River Parish Sheriff’s patrol unit claimed the life of 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta. State Trooper Eddie Thomas says the unit was responding to an emergency with lights and siren activated when Winn, for reasons still under investigation, turned left and collided with the patrol vehicle.

Christopher Sepulvado’s attorney, Shawn Nolan, said the thought of strapping the 81-year-old to a chair and forcing him to breathe toxic gas into his failing lungs is barbaric. Attorney General Liz Murrill says what he did to his six-year-old victim was even more barbaric.

A Red River Parish Sheriff’s deputy is involved in a deadly crash over the weekend. State Police Trooper Eddie Thomas says the crash happened on U.S. Highway 84 near Cut-Off Road, and the crash killed 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta.

A Red River Parish Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a wreck on Saturday morning that killed a 70-year-old woman. State Police say Ella Winn of Coushatta made a left turn into the sheriff’s deputy’s Chevy Tahoe, which had its emergency lights and sirens activated. Investigators say Winn was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene, while the deputy, 23-year-old Asia Pikes, suffered severe injuries.

Reuters is reporting that Sheahan is expected to be named the deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
