A Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputy has been arrested for cruelty to a juvenile. State Police say their investigation found 2 separate occasions where 28-year-old Matthew Frost of Lafayette committed the crime against a single victim last June. The investigation is ongoing, but Frost was arrested Monday and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on 2 counts of felony cruelty to a juvenile.

Today President Trump imposed 25-percent tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico. Senator Bill Cassidy says part of the reason is national security.

Cassidy says the tariffs are also meant to crack down on illegal border crossings. Canada and Mexico have each reacted by imposing tariffs of their own against the United States.

President Trump addresses a joint session of Congress tonight. House Speaker Mike Johnson says there’s much to celebrate with multiple accomplishments since the president took office and he says Republicans’ message is resonating with the American people.

A very strong line of thunderstorms is making its way through Louisiana at this hour. The line stretches from southwest to northeast Louisiana and the Alexandria area just experienced some heavy rainfall.

Twenty-five percent tariffs went into effect on Canada and Mexico today. Economists say the new tariffs could lead to higher prices for American consumers. But President Donald Trump says the tariffs will encourage manufacturing in the United States and force Canada and Mexico to do more to prevent illegal border crossings. Mexico and Canada say they will respond with their own tariffs on American products that are imported into their countries.

The Shreveport area saw wind gusts of 60 miles per hour this morning. The rain has yet to arrive in southeast Louisiana but it sure is windy. The threat of severe weather is not stopping Cajun Mardi Gras in Eunice. Mayor Scott Fontenot says it never has, and it never will.

The Cajun Mardi Gras festival in Eunice started last Friday and wraps up today with a parade that pays tribute to the heritage and customs of the Acadian people who settled in southwest Louisiana. People dressed in costume run through the countryside begging for ingredients for the gumbo that they’ll make at the end. While many will walk, others will be in trailers or on horseback. It attracts people from all across the country and beyond.

Ruston has a new police chief. 55-year-old Eric Watson of Shreveport replaces Steve Rogers, who retired last month. Watson is a Louisiana Tech grad who served in the Louisiana National Guard. He was a Ruston police officer in the 1990s before spending 25 years as a drug enforcement agent for the federal government.

Mardi Gras is always a festive occasion in Louisiana. But this year, Mother Nature has other plans. The entire state is bracing for severe weather today. LSU Public Health Climatologist Barry Keim says in the New Orleans area…

Both New Orleans parades took off this morning and will be required to be wrapped up by noon today. And other cities are also adjusting their Mardi Gras parade plans. In Lafayette, Police Sergeant Robin Green says they’re moving up two parades and are cancelling a third.

The independent parade was slated to start immediately after the Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival parade, but the weather will not hold up at that time; and thus, it has been cancelled.

It’s a Mardi Gras celebration in the Cajun tradition in Eunice, and it has its big finish today. The Cajun Mardi Gras festival started last Friday and wraps up today with a parade that pays tribute to the heritage and customs of the Acadian people who settled in southwest Louisiana. Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot says it’s actually more of a run than a parade.

The participants run through the countryside begging for ingredients for the gumbo that they’ll make at the end.

The parades are required to complete their routes by 11:30 AM, but NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says they could shut the party down earlier…

And we now have a tornado watch posted that covers a large portion of the state until 3 PM this afternoon. Nearly all of north and central and a part of southwest Louisiana are covered in the watch box. That includes the cities of Shreveport, Monroe, Alexandria and DeRidder.

It’s an early start to the revelry in New Orleans on this Fat Tuesday because of anticipated severe weather this afternoon. The Krewe of Zulu started rolling before seven o’ clock this morning and Rex is scheduled to roll at 9:30. There are no marching krewes, bands or truck floats, and both routes are shortened. In Jefferson Parish, parades are canceled today, but NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says it was important to have parades in New Orleans.
