Anderson says the victim is identified as 38-year-old Jason Mitchell Brooks and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In Forbes’ list of the 400 richest people in the United States, New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson comes in at number 386. The 2014 FORBES 400 lists Benson’s net worth at $1.6 billion. Benson is the only Louisianian to make the list.

A standard rape kit at a hospital has to be free under federal law, but hospitals can still charge for HIV testing, pregnancy testing or medication that could prevent a rape victim from getting an STD.

Fort Polk has received the most supporting public comments of any Army base in the country facing military cutbacks, according to the Army Environmental Command. Michael Reese, with Fort Polk Progress, says this is the first step in the force reduction process with the next step being a public listing session in March…

The identity of the driver will not be released until notification of next of kin, but Moreau says he was a soldier at Fort Polk. The passenger of the vehicle has not been identified at this time.

State Police say a DeRidder man is dead after sustaining injuries in the crash of a truck driven by a 13-year-old in Beauregard Parish. Authorities say the truck struck a cow standing in the roadway of LA 112, causing the unlicensed driver to lose control of the vehicle and then strike a tree. 38-year-old Jason Brooks died as a result of the crash. The 13-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger received moderate injuries. No one in the vehicle was restrained.

Election day is November 4th and if you want to cast a ballot and have not registered to vote, time is running out. Louisiana’s US Senate race has been identified nationally as one which could ultimately determine control of the upper house. If you want to vote in the upcoming election, the deadline to register is October 6th.

US Senate candidate Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy released a television ad over the weekend featuring former supporters of incumbent Democrat Mary Landrieu who say they will now vote for Cassidy because of Landrieu’s support of Obamacare. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says attaching Landrieu to Obama is a smart strategy for Cassidy…

According to the Army Environmental Command, Fort Polk has received the most supporting comments of any of the 30 Army bases across the country facing military cutbacks. Michael Reese, with Fort Polk Progress, says out of about 110,000 comments received this year, over 34,000 comments supported Fort Polk. He says they learned last year that community support of the base makes a big difference…

One of the women says she voted for Landrieu before, but when the Senator voted for Obamacare she knew she’d made a mistake. A Lake Charles lawmaker is holding a Town Hall meeting today to get people together for a talk on Common Core. Representative Brett Beymann says they’ll have people on hand today at Sam Houston High School who have done extensive research on Common Core and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns…:

Other than the Saints tough loss to the Cowboys last night which puts them at one and three so far on the season, another big sports discussion today in Louisiana is the quarterback starting spot at LSU. Anthony Jennings had a horrible start against New Mexico State Saturday and fans were chanting for Coach Les Miles to put in Brandon Harris. Miles was asked if Jennings lose his confidence…:

Leaders in southwest Louisiana are getting together for a meeting this evening to help the public get a better understanding of Common Core. Lake Charles Representative Brett Geymann says he decided to hold the Town Hall Meeting because so many complaints have been coming in from parents and teachers. He says they will have a panel at Sam Houston High School today at 5:30 to answer questions about Common Core…:

State Police say a man from Converse died over the weekend in a motorcycle crash in DeSoto Parish. They say 57-year-old Robert Walton was throwing from his Harley when it struck a car that pulled into his path On US Highway 171. Investigators say the driver of the car, 21-year-old Celeste Brewer of Stonewall, was not injured. The crash is under investigation.

Authorities are saying it’s an arson fire that lit up an apartment complex on Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge Sunday night. They say 33-year-old Jeffrey Jones allegedly set a mattress on fire with a cigarette on purpose which caused a blaze that damaged 10 units. Two residents were treated for minor injuries.
