State Police say a single vehicle crash in Avoyelles Parish has killed a pedestrian. They say 50-year-old Annette B. Smith of Marksville was jogging on the side of the road with traffic when she was struck by a pickup truck. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was uninjured. Routine toxicology tests are pending and the crash investigation is ongoing.

State Police say they’ve snatched up about a half a million dollars in cocaine and an airplane in Terrebonne Parish. They say in a joint effort by several law enforcement agencies, 29-year-old John Crow of Brownsville, Texas was met by agents at his plane at the Thibodaux Municipal airport and he was acting extremely nervous. Troopers say 34 pounds of cocaine was found in Crow’s luggage. The drugs, cash and the plane was seized and Crow was sent to jail.

According to the latest U.S. Census data, Louisiana had the third highest rate of poverty in the country for 2014, just below 20 percent. Jan Moller, Director of the Louisiana Budget Project, says he hopes the gubernatorial candidates will create plans to reduce poverty in the state because it’s often a topic that gets swept under the rug:

The Saints are licking their wounds after a 26-19 loss to Tampa Bay. It was another tough day for Drew Brees and the New Orleans offense. Their longest passing play was 24 yards to Marques Colston. Brees took a big hit in the first half and the veteran QB admits the hit on his shoulder affected a few of his throws, but wouldn’t use that as an excuse.

Convicted serial killer Derrick Todd Lee has lost his latest appeal to the Louisiana Supreme Court of his death sentence in the 2002 death of LSU student Charlotte Murray Pace in Baton Rouge. Lee was arguing the district court didn’t give enough funding for adequate DNA testing. That and other arguments were rejected by the high court. Lee is convicted of killing two women and is linked to five other murders.
