According to a recent survey by JMC Analytics on the Louisiana governor’s race, Democrat John Bel Edwards is leading Republican David Vitter by 20 percentage points. The Voice of the LSU Tigers will miss the first game of his broadcasting career this weekend as No. 4 LSU takes on No. 7 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Jim Hawthorne, who has called every LSU game since 1984, underwent surgery last week and several sources are reporting he could miss the rest of the season. He’s retiring after this year. A spokesman for LSU says Hawthorne’s status the remainder of the season has not been determined.

Rapides Parish continues to clean up after severe weather ripped through the area over the weekend. Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Tommy Carnline says there was a confirmed tornado that touched down in Elmer knocking down powerlines and damaging several homes. He says thankfully nobody was injured but there is plenty of cleaning up to do…:

The State Fire Marshal’s Office says an 81-year-old homeowner perished in a residential blaze over the weekend in Claiborne Parish. They say firefighters found the home completely engulfed in flames upon arrival and later the body of Mary Bryant of Homer was located. The investigation into how Bryant died and how the fire started is ongoing.

Officials with the Thibodaux Police Department say a 44-year-old man was cited after he struck an officer several times and then purposely defecated on himself to avoid arrest. They say Samuel Rodrigue was likey high on drugs when the incident took place. He was issued a misdemeanor summons to appear in court on the charges.

Republican David Vitter and Democrat John Bel Edwards are scheduled to square off in a televised debate on November 16th, the Monday before the runoff. Governor Bobby Jindal’s office says Louisiana is ranked as having the 4th best business climate in the nation by Site Selection, which is 2 spots down from the prior year. They say it is the sixth consecutive Top 10 ranking for Louisiana in the annual Site Selection report and reinforces the state’s reputation as a top location for business investment and job creation.

The Saints won a 52-49 shootout over the New York Giants yesterday on kicker Kai Forbath’s 50-yard field goal as time expired. Saints quarterback Drew Brees tied an NFL record for touchdown passes in a single game with seven and Giants QB Eli Manning threw for six TDs. Their combined 13 touchdown passes in a single game set a new NFL record. Saints head coach Sean Payton was impressed with Forbath’s game-winning kick that improved the Black & Gold to 4-4 on the season…

The Kansas City Royals are World Series champions after defeating the New York Mets last night 7-2 in 12 innings. The Royals scored two in the ninth to send the game to extra innings and poured on five runs in the twelfth for the victory. This is Kansas City’s first world championship since 1985.

In the Southland Conference, McNeese State remains undefeated on the season after slipping past Abilene Christian 15-13. It was a rough game for the Cowboys as they turned the ball over to the Wildcats a total of five times but kicker Trent Manuel connected on all three of his field goal attempts to keep McNeese atop the Conference standings. The Pokes will host Sam Houston State Saturday.

Elsewhere in the Southland: Southeastern Louisiana was defeated by Central Arkansas 21-16 and Northwestern State defeated Nicholls 37-21.

In the Sun Belt, UL-Lafayette scored 21 second half points to rally to defeat ULM 30-24. The Warhawks led by 15 at the half but the second half was all Ragin Cajuns. Quarterback Brooks Haack led the Cajuns by passing for one touchdown and rushing for another. ULM QB Garrett Smith threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. The Warhawks are now 1-7 on the season and will travel to Troy Saturday. UL-Lafayette improves to 3-4 and will next face Georgia Southern in Statesboro.
