Governor-elect John Bel Edwards has created a higher education transition team to make policy recommendations to improve Louisiana’s colleges and universities. Jeff Palermo reports…:

A longtime manager at a maritime skills development center was shot and killed by an employee in Kenner. Authorities say the suspect,50-year-old John Spears of Marrero, waited for police to arrive and arrest him. The murder happened at the Houston Marine in a strip mall at about 3:30 p.m. The victim, 49-year-old Anthony Tardo of Mandeville, worked for the business for 19 years.

 

A national credit reporting agency says Louisiana will face many challenges, as much of the Jindal Administration’s plan to solve the $487 million midyear shortfall has only temporary fixes. Fitch ratings says stop-gap measures were used that don’t address the state’s major budget problems. State Treasurer John Kennedy says this is a warning shot:

As the holiday season continues, many office parties will kick off this weekend. Tulane Business Professor Dr. Mark Rosa says work parties are put together by the company to show their appreciation to employees during the holiday season for their hard work. He says there are some etiquette tips to follow when attending a party with your bosses and co-workers.

At the Mercedes-Benz Superdome yesterday, four champions were crowned in high school football. In Division One,…Catholic upset Rummel 31-28. While in division two Parkview Baptist defeated St. Thomas More 24-21 as a 37-yard touchdown pass by Reggie Hayes was the game winner.

In Division Three…Notre Dame finished off an undefeated season by beating Riverside 13-3. It’s the fifth state title for the Pioneers and in Division one Southern Lab beat St. Mary’s 36-2.

Looking ahead to next week…In Class 5A…it will be Zachary versus John Ehret in the title. In Four-A…defending champion Neville will face Edna Karr, over in 3A….Lutcher will battle rival St. James. In two-A, Mangham will take on Kinder and in one-A…Haynesville will battle Kentwood.

 

Lebron James scored 37 points but the Pelicans outlasted the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-108 in overtime last night. Anthony Davis led the way for New Orleans as he scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds. Davis had six in O-T.

In college basketball…Louisiana Tech needed double overtime to beat Jackson State 95-88. Southern over Southeastern Louisiana 73-69.

In college football…Grambling State faces Alcorn State in the SWAC Championship at 3 PM. At Six o’ clock tonight, McNeese State will battle Sam Houston State. The Cowboys are undefeated on the year and own a victory over the Bearkats.

On Sunday, the Saints take on the undefeated Carolina Panthers and we’ll find out where LSU and Louisiana Tech will go bowling. The Tigers could go either to bowls Florida or Texas, while the Bulldogs could receive a bid to the New Orleans Bowl.

The higher education transition committee is tasked with coming up with policy recommendations for colleges and universities. Edwards announced Friday a third transition committee, this one dealing with Economic Development.

It looks as though a pretty stiff competition is brewing in the race to be Louisiana’s next Speaker of the House. Edwards says he’s backing New Orlreans Democratic state Representative Wal Leger. A group of statewide conservatives are working hard to get support for Republican state Representative Cameron Henry to lead the lower chamber. The election occurs January 11th.

A jury in Ouachita Parish handed down a guilty verdict to the man accused of shooting at two Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents in May. 32-year-old Sgt. Scott Bullitt was shot while on patrol by 29-year-old Luke Hust. LDWF spokesman Adam Einck says the jury handed down the guilty verdict to Hust in just 4 hours…:

This morning a judge dismissed the lawsuit seeking to toss the suspension of Amite from the playoffs as ruled by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, saying the court does not have the power to second guess a private organization’s decision. This means the ruling stands from the LHSAA stating Amite can’t compete in the Class 3A semi-final game because of a bench clearing fight during their last victory. St. James automatically advances to the title game.

The Baton Rouge Police Department says one of two men accused in the murders and kidnappings of the Duplantiers is back in Louisiana after he was extradited back today from Florida. They say 42-year-old Ernesto Alonso is officially charged with 2 counts each of first degree murder and second degree kidnapping. His alleged accomplice, 48-year-old Frank Garcia, is still in the Florida Jail.

The AP is reporting there is a stiff competition brewing in the race to be Louisiana’s next House speaker. Governor-elect John Bel Edwards says he supports Democrat Walt Leger, but Republican Cameron Henry is also running. Questions are being raised as to whether or not this leadership dispute could make things more complicated for lawmakers to work together in February’s special session to address the state’s budget woes.

LDWF spokesman Adam Einck says the jury handed down the guilty verdict to 29-year-old Luke Hust after hours of deliberation. Einck says LDWF is pleased with the verdict and is thankful for everyone who helped get these convictions…

Hust was convicted on two counts of attempted first degree murder and a count of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Governor Bobby Jindal and his wife will host the 8th Annual Lighting of the Governor’s Mansion Christmas Tree tonight. The event will take place at 5 p.m. Guests will include several families of Gold and Blue Star Moms, Purple Heart Veterans, Women Veterans of Louisiana and Louisiana Army National Guardsmen who are currently deployed or about to be deployed overseas.

KATC is reporting that a 14-year-old student at Holy Family School in Lafayette died after collapsing during a basketball game. They say Holy Family Principal Rogers Griffin issued a release indicating Teddy Ray Daigle fell during the game, and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Daigle died at Lafayette General Hospital.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the jury in the trial of a man who shot an LDWF enforcement agent in Ouachita Parish came back with two attempted degree murder convictions. 32 year old Sgt Scott Bullitt of Jonesboro was shot while on patrol by 29-year-old Luke Hust of Monroe on May 21st. LDWF says Hust will be sentenced on February 11th.
