A $20-billion settlement has finally been reached regarding the BP oil spill in 2010. The money, paid over 16 years, will go towards Clean Water Act penalties and to cover environmental damage. Associate Director of the Tulane Energy Institute, Eric Smith, says Louisiana will get some money out of the deal…:

Smith says with all the uncertainty surrounding the state’s operating budget, it’s unclear if the money will still go towards the coast.

Mandeville Police say a deadly shooting Monday morning at a gas station appears to have been in self-defense. Police said video from the scene shows the man who ended up fatally shot, berating the clerk and then getting into a huge fight and continuously attacking the shooter. No charges have been filed against the shooter, and the case will now be turned over to the DA’s Office for further review.

A federal judge in New Orleans approves a 20-billion dollar settlement that BP will have to pay for its role in the 2010 oil spill. The oil giant will pay five-point-five billion dollars in civil Clean Water Act penalties and Louisiana is one of five states that will also be compensated.

Authorities say a Sulphur man drowned in the Calcasieu River while participating in a triathlon. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office spokesperson Kim Myers says 25-year-old Taurean Blake swam about 100 yards out when he started to struggle. Myers says Blake was revived and taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser told lawmakers today that he might have to close several state parks and historic sites because of budget cuts to the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. He says with all the money problems Louisiana is facing, the state needs tourism dollars.

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser told lawmakers that further budget cuts to the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism could force him to close several state parks and historic sites. He says with all the money problems Louisiana is facing, the state needs tourism dollars.

Nungesser says they are looking into private-public partnerships, naming rights, increasing fees, and even using prison workers to save money. Leesville Representative James Armes voiced his concerns for our parks and historic sites, saying all the budget cuts put them at risk. He says lawmakers have cut the budget as much as they can, but tourism can’t take any more cuts.

Nungesser says tourism is looking at a 30-percent cut in state funding.

Three proposed bills aim to help ex-prison inmates reintegrate into society are set to be heard on the House floor this week. One would create a certificate of employability that former-felons could show potential employers. Holly Harris, Executive Director for the US Justice Action Network, says people getting out of jail need opportunities to help reduce the recidivism rate.

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser told a House budget committee he could close several state parks, museums and historic sites if his agency is forced to take up to a 30-percent reduction in state financing. Nungesser says he’s looking at looking at ways to reduce state costs to keep these sites open…

A man and a woman were fatally shot in their Kenner apartment early this morning. Three children were also in the home, but they were not hurt. Lt. Brian McGregor with the Kenner Police Department says the discovery was made after one of the children went to a neighbor’s house…:

He says a 10 year old boy, two year old and infant were inside the house, but unharmed. The incident is being treated as a double homicide.

Cops say it was a trio of children who robbed a pizza delivery driver at gunpoint in Houma. Captain Dawn Foret, with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office, says a 12 and 13 year old were arrested for armed robbery, and a 17 year old suspect, Leroy Miles, is at large….:

He says the off-duty detective shot the alleged thief as the suspect reached for a gun. The burglar survived and will be arrested when released from the hospital.

Cops say a man and a woman from Kenner were shot and killed in their bed overnight, while all of their young children were home. Lt. Brian McGregor with the Kenner Police Department says a 10-year-old child went to alert the neighbors about the shooting and the couple was located in their room, shot multiple times. He says there were no signs of forced entry, but a vehicle was seen fleeing the scene this morning…:

The 10 year old, a 2 year old and an infant were unharmed in the incident which is under investigation.

A man drowned during a triathlon in Calcasieu Parish over the weekend. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office spokesperson Kim Myers says a brave Marine jumped in after a struggling Taurean Blake of Sulphur, but sadly it was too late..:

Mandeville Police are investigating a deadly shooting at a gas station on Highway 22. The suspect is in custody. The victim was transported to Lakeview Regional Medical Center where he died.

Police have arrested a 12-year-old and 13-year-old in connection with the armed robbery of a pizza delivery driver in Houma. Authorities are also looking for a third suspect, 17-year-old Leroy Miles. Captain Dawn Foret with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says the three adolescents robbed the delivery driver in the apartment complex where they live…:

Foret says the two juveniles have been arrested for armed robbery, and Miles is wanted for theft of a motor vehicle and armed robbery.

Convicted Bourbon Street shooter Trung Le was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
Le got 40 years for manslaughter and 20 years for attempted manslaughter. The judge said he didn’t think Le was a hit man but that he was someone who displayed a reckless disregard for public safety.
