After two weeks of tragedy in the south, the community is coming together to Back the Badge. The Baton Rouge Area Foundation has set up a web page for people to donate to a fund for the fallen Baton Rouge officers. BRAF Communications Director Mukul Verma says they have already raised $30-thousand and more donations are still coming in…:

Not only are officers getting a lot of community support, but departments around the state and nation are coming in to help out in Baton Rouge. Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police President, Darrell Basco in Pineville says he’s not worried that the fatal ambush will deter people from wanting to become cops…:

He says it’s great after this type of event that we see support of the public across the state, not only in Baton Rouge.

There is some controversy that the speech Melania Trump made at the Republican National Convention last night sounded very similar to Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech at the Democratic National Convention. Former Jefferson Parish President and a Louisiana delegate at the convention in Cleveland, John Young, says if it’s true, the campaign needs to admit it and move on:

Funeral arrangements have been announced for two of the officers who were killed in Baton Rouge on Sunday. A viewing for BRPD Officer Matthew Gerald will be held Thursday at Resthaven in Baton Rouge, then again at Healing Place on Friday before services. The burial for Gerald will be at the Louisiana National Cemetery in Zachary. Corporal Montrell Jackson’s visitation, Services and burial will take place beginning at 9am Monday at Living Faith Christian Center in Baton Rouge.

Police officers around the state and across the country are reeling from Sunday’s tragic ambush in Baton Rouge, and law enforcement now has to decide where to go from here. Medical Director at the Capital Area Human Services Dr. Aniedi Udofa (uh-need-E U-dough-fuh) says it’s very important to have discussions with children in the wake of the tragedy in Baton Rouge. She says it’s also a good idea for parents to talk about the importance of police officers and their role in keeping a community safe.

Udofa says limit the amount of time your kids spend watching TV or on social media if you notice a change in their behavior.

The aftermath of the violence in Baton Rouge is being felt at the Republican National Convention currently underway in Cleveland. Chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party, Roger Villere says security has been ramped up at the convention because of the recent attacks. He says it takes an extra 30 minutes or so to get through security, but it’s worth it to keep everyone safe.

A 4-year-old boy was killed in a murder-suicide in Sulphur, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office. Spokeswoman Kim Myers says it appears 59-year-old Kenneth Bacque shot his son before turning the gun on himself…

Dabadie says if the shooter, Gavin Long, was not stopped, he probably would have gone straight to police headquarters and taken more lives.

Another teacher from Destrehan High School has been formally charged amid allegations she had a longtime sexual affair with one of her underage female students. The news first came to light in January when she was arrested, and bills of information filed by prosecutors charge 27-year-old Kimmie Naquin of one count each of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student. She faces up to 10 years in prison.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie says Officer Matthew Gerald was a devoted husband and father of two and joined the Baton Rouge Police Department in March. Dabadie says Gerald also served in the Marine Corp, the Army, and served three tours in Iraq…:

Also killed was 32-year-old Corporal Montrell Jackson with BRPD — a 10 year veteran with the department, and East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s deputy Brad Garafola. EBRSO Deputy Nick Tullier was critically wounded and is in the hospital on life support from injuries to his head and stomach.

East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Beau Clark released autopsy reports on the three officers and said they all were murdered and died of multiple gunshot wounds.

A murder/suicide in Sulphur has left a man and his 4-year-old-son dead. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Kim Myers says they received several calls from people who were worried about 59-year-old Kenneth Bacque (Bah-kay)…:

That’s Governor John Bel Edwards who called Sunday’s tragic fatal shooting of three Baton Rouge Police officers “pure, unadulterated evil.”

The shooting occurred less than a mile away from police headquarters. Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie says if the shooter, Gavin Long, was not stopped, he probably would have gone straight to police headquarters and taken more lives. He says it was a long range shot that ended Long’s terror.

State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson says they’ve learned the gunman in the shooting that killed three officers was in Baton Rouge for a few days before showing up at Airline Highway on Sunday morning to execute his attack. Edmonson says they do believe that 29-year-old Gavin Long of Kansas City acted alone at the time of the shooting…

Governor John Bel Edwards says Long came to Louisiana to harm our community.

There were also three officers injured in the attack. East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said deputy Nicholas Tullier is in very, very critical condition. Gautreaux says another injured deputy, Bruce Simmons, was shot in the arm and a titanium rod was used to replace the bone that was shattered. Gautreaux praised the Baton Rouge City SWAT team for killing Long, before he took down more officers.

In other news…state senator Troy Brown is facing a domestic abuse charge in Ascension Parish. Sheriff Jeff Wiley says Brown was arrested at his Geismar residence after his wife called authortied and told them that the senator was irate and bit her on the forearm. Brown was also arrested eight months ago in New Orleans for allegedly punching a woman in the eye.

Edmonson says they recovered a rental car Gavin Long used, which is being analyzed for evidence, as well as the weapons Long had at the time of the shooting…

Edmonson says they are still trying to determine what the ex-Marine did prior to the attack and who he spoke with as they continue to investigate whether he had any associates who helped him carry out Sunday’s shooting that ended the lives of three police officers.

In Gavin Long’s online postings, he says the best way to handle the shooting of Sterling by two white police officers was through more violence…:
