A report from Carinsurance-dot-com finds Louisiana is the third most dangerou state for teen drivers. The study found that Louisiana teens are drinking and driving at a rate of nine-percent and texting and driving at a rate of 49-percent, both percentages are above the national average. The Jimmy Davis Bridge in Shreveport-Bossier City will not get its planned renovation anytime soon because the construction contract has been terminated. Department of Transportation spokesperson Rodney Mallett says work has been halted because of a protected species of bird that’s nesting on the bridge.

Mallett says DOTD is regrouping and will try to come up with a cost prohibitive plan to protect the cliff swallows that are living on the bridge.

The House Appropriations Committee has approved a spending plan for next fiscal year that fully funds the TOPS Scholarship program. Governor John Bel Edwards proposed spending plan only funded TOPS at one-third of the level neeeded to completely pay for all of the tuitions. Money was moved from other parts of the budget to fully fund the scholarship program. The full house will debate the budget bill later this week.

A man from Slidell drowned in Lake Pontchartrain Saturday while drinking with friends, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses told authorities 28-year-old Joshua Entrekin had been drinking when he went into the water and never came back up. An autopsy is scheduled for today. St. Tammany Coroner Dr. Charles Preston said Louisiana has the third-highest drowning rate in the nation, and it’s vital we all take precautions when on the water.

The National Weather Service says parts of north Louisiana could see severe weather today, with storms increasing in intensity this afternoon and evening. Forecasters say the system could bring large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

Disaster Loan Outreach Centers will open today in Assumption, St. James and St. John Parishes for those affected by tornadoes and straight line winds in February. Officials said disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners with interest rates as low as 1.813 percent.

A two-year-old girl is dead and authorities say a man who babysat the child is considered a person of interest in the case. Authorities say Willow Rain Renteria-Molina’s body was found in a remote area of Beauregard Parish. Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft says 33-year-old Rodney “Donnie” Bailey Junior was the last person to see her alive and he is in custody.

An LSU audit supports the university’s claims that its former band director Roy King improperly awarded musician scholarships to Golden Girls dance team and color guard. LSU released the aduit to the Advocate newspaper. King has filed a lawsuit against LSU over his recent firing.

A 36-year-old Lafayette woman has pleaded guilty to stealing gift guards whe she worked for the US Postal Service. Tonia Moore-Parker faces five years in prison. The US Attorney’s office says Moore-Parker opened five envelopes and stole gift guards worth 150-dollars.

There are three Cajun jockeys in today’s Kentucky Debry. Kent Desormeaux is riding one of the favorites, Exaggerator. Desormeaux is looking for his fourth Kentucky Derby win. Vernon Parish Sheriff authorities have announced that the body of a two-girl was found in a remote area in Beauregard Parish. Sheriff Sam Craft says 33-year-old Rodney “Donnie” Bailey Junior is considered a person of interest, as he was the last person to see Willow Rain Renteria-Molina of Hornbeck alive. Bailey would often babysit the child according to family members. Bailey is in custody as authorities have charged him with other crimes.

A study from the firm KPMG ranks north Louisiana has the most compeitive place to do business in the country. Scott Martinez, President of the North Louisiana Economic Partnership, says low utility costs is one reason why Monroe and Shreveport rank high on this list…
