The Natchitoches Police Department is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that claimed the life of Jimmy D. Long Sr. — a leader in state government for nearly a half-century. They say the crash occurred as Long was pulling out of a private driveway, and was hit by a vehicle driven by a juvenile on University Parkway. The crash is under investigation. Long’s 32-year tenure in the legislature was one of the longest in the state’s history. Governor John Bel Edwards says his death is a tragic loss.

Senate candidate Troy Hebert is suing Southern Media and Opinion Research pollster Bernie Pinsonat claiming he misrepresented him in a May poll. Hebert says the poll listed him under the wrong party affiliation…:

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine is in New Orleans today, but political analyst Clancy Dubos says the goal is probably to raise more money than votes because republican candidate Donald Trump’s poll numbers are holding strong in the South, despite falling nationwide.

Dubos says if Trump’s numbers continue to decline, the Democrats could have a chance of winning the Bayou State.

A flood watch is in effect for several southeastern Louisiana parishes through Friday. Andrew Ansorge with the National Weather Service in Slidell says some areas will see upwards of 10 inches of rain.

The Department of Health says Louisiana has received $19.5 million dollars in a FEMA grant to help communities that are still recovering from devastating floods this past spring. It will fund work for about 1,575 families in 36 parishes.

Governor John Bel Edwards and other New Orleans officials say there is an additional $10 million dollars to begin work on a flyover ramp that will link I-10 to the Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner.

A longtime leader in state government died in a tragic two-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in Natchitoches. 84-year-old Former state Representative Jimmy D. Long Sr. served in the House of Representatives for 32 years, and was on the UL-System Board of Supervisors for the past 15. Governor John Bel Edwards said Long dedicated his life to public service and embodied the hardworking spirit of Louisiana, and will be sorely missed.

State Treasurer John Kennedy, who has often been at odds with the governor, issued a statement thanking Edwards for calling on Brown to resign. Fellow Democrat Senator JP Morrell also called on Brown to leave the legislature because his recent altercations reflect a deficiency in judgement that undermines everything they’ve achieved in passing legislation that seeks to further protect domestic violence victims.

NFIB State Director Dawn Starns links this to the uncertainty small business owners now face with all the recent tax changes Louisiana has seen. A couple in Bunkie has been arrested for animal cruelty charges. Sheriff Doug Anderson says Maxine and Gordon Doughty were cited for simple cruelty to animals and additional criminal charges are pending. He says they rescued 38 animals that are receiving medical care.

Anderson reminds citizens that animal neglect is a serious crime.

As the new school year is getting underway, the state Department of Transportation is reminding bicycle riders to be safe on the road. DOTD secretary Shawn Wilson says as students head back to school, more bicycles will be out on the road.

But Brown reportedly says he will not resign from the legislature. The senator was arrested last month on a misdemeanor domestic abuse battery charge for allegedly biting his wife on the arm. That arrest comes just 8 months after he was arrested for simple battery in New Orleans for allegedly punching his mistress in the face.

State Police are seeking a suspect in a crash that resulted in Interstate 10 being closed in Baton Rouge for over 12 hours. Trooper Bryan Lee says on August 5 a red Ford Fusion struck an 18-wheeler, causing it to overturn. He says the truck driver sustained minor injuries, and the other driver fled on foot…:

Lee says the suspect is a white male with long blonde and brown hair and tattoos covering both arms and legs.

The Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office along with the Human Society rescued 27 dogs and 11 cats from a filthy home in Bunkie. Sheriff Doug Anderson says in July, they received a call that animals were being neglected at the home of Maxine and Gordan Doughty, so they began an investigation. He says when authorities returned to check on the animals a week later, the conditions were deplorable….:

Authorities in Livingston Parish are responding to a log truck that was hit by a train shortly before 3 this afternoon. The wreck happened near Florida Blvd. Injuries have been reported and AirMed was sent to the scene.

Baton Rouge Police are looking for a suspect on the levee who fled from authorities. The man was in a vehicle pursuit with police near Nicholson on Highland road. He then jumped out of the tan Toyota he was driving on River Road near the Mississippi River bridge and fled on foot.
