The LSU Board of Supervisors voted to increase student fees, which aren’t covered by TOPS, beginning this fall. It would raise about $14 million dollars annually, they said. Members also took a step Thursday that would get the LSU AgCenter closer to hiring a Nevada-based company to run the state’s medical marijuana program.

Today’s LSU baseball game in the College World Series is another win or go home as the Tigers take on No. 1 Oregon State. LSU hopes starting pitcher Alex Lange can go deep today as they are running low on starters in Omaha with injured Eric Walker out. Lange says he knows the bull pen needs to step it up…:

A man imprisoned for 36 years is free again after a federal judge threw out his murder conviction and life sentence for a murder in New Orleans. Attorney for the Innocence Project in New Orleans, Richard Davis, says John Floyd plans to spend his days of freedom working on a farm in the Lafayette area with a businessman he met during his time at Angola..:

He says Floyd’s trial was not constitutional at the time.

The National Safety Council has launched a vehicle recall campaign to allow motorists to enter in their VIN number to determine if a there has been a manufacturer recall on the vehicle. President and CEO Deborah Hersman says Louisiana has the third highest rate of open recalls in the country…:

With little discussion and no objections, the LSU board has approved an increase in student fees. Across the board, fees would go up 2% starting in the fall — which would amount to about $270 more per semester that is not covered by TOPS.

LSU and No.1 Oregon State play today at 2pm in the College World Series. With a win, the Tigers will force an elimination game versus The Beavers on Saturday. The Tigers will start All-SEC pitcher Alex Lange, who says he’s ready to go….:

LSU is another step closer to growing medical marijuana. The board gave the LSU Ag Center approval to begin negotiations with a Las Vegas-based company, in a deal expected to bring in at least $3.4 million over five years.

A 36-year Angola inmate, John Floyd, is free after a U.S. District Court judge in New Orleans tossed his life in prison conviction. His co-counsel, Richard Davis, says Floyd was wrongly convicted of second degree murder in 1982, but new forensic evidence was found in the case…:

Five people are behind bars and another is dead following a shooting in Denham Springs. Deputies reportedly had to swim across high waters to detain the remaining subject. It’s believed the shooting was drug related.

Forecasters are still keeping an eye on the tropical depression moving across the state, as heavy rains persist around Louisiana. State climatologist Barry Keim says the system is weakening as it moves inland, but the threat isn’t over yet.

Tornado watches are in effect in south Louisiana until 10 pm.

Louisiana will get a new medical school, as the Board of Regents grants a license to New York Institute of Technology, which will be hosted on the ULM campus. ULM President Dr. Nick Bruno says the Stubbs Hall building on campus could be the new home of the med school.

ULM is also the only publicly funded pharmacy school in the state.

Heavy rains continue across the state as a tropical depression treks inland. State climatologist Barry Keim says even though Tropical Storm Cindy was downgraded this morning, we aren’t out of the woods yet. He says north Louisiana will get the heaviest rains.

Tornado watches remain in effect in southeast Louisiana until 10 pm.

Department of Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says several roads have been closed in south Louisiana. He encourages motorists to visit 511.la.org for up to date travel information.

Wilson reminds drivers it is never safe to cross a flooded roadway.

The Louisiana Nursing Home Association announces 18 facilities in the state have been chosen as a recipient for the Bronze-Commitment to Quality Award. This achievement spotlights providers who have demonstrated commitment to quality care for seniors. Lisa Gardner with CommCare nursing centers says all these facilities have shown a great improvement.

Cindy has been downgraded to a tropical depression but flooding remains a big concern. State Climatologist Barry Keim says flash flood watches remain in effect for much of the state throughout tonight. He says strong winds could also cause problems in some areas.

18 nursing home facilities in the state have been chose as a recipient for the Bronze- Commitment to Quality Award, according to the Louisiana Nursing Home Association. Lisa Gardner with CommCare nursing centers says this Bronze achievement points nursing homes in a direction to improve their facilities even more. She says there are three levels of commitment, bronze, silver, and gold.

LSU students could be looking at paying 2% more in fees starting in the fall. Today a Board of Supervisors committee approved the increase, which now goes before the full board for a vote this afternoon. The hike would not be covered by TOPS, and students who attend the main LSU campus would pay an additional $270.
