LSU will rename multiple streets on campus, including Raphael Semmes Road, which was named after a Confederate officer. LSU Mass Communication professor Bob Mann says earlier this year, his students looked at street names and buildings that should be changed…

Raphael Semmes Road will be changed to Veterans Drive. Mann hopes his students were able to accelerate this change. He says Raphael Semmes was only on the LSU facility for a few months after the Civil War.

The Louisiana Association of Non Profit Organizations will hold 24 hour campaigns in Baton Rouge and Acadiana urging people to give to their favorite non-profit organization during Giving Tuesday.  LANO’s Director of Business Development Emilie McBride says their hope is that people open their hearts and donate…

During the Thanksgiving weekend, State Police investigated four fatal crashes, the same number as last year. Sgt. Jared Sandifer says typically fatal crashes around this time are a result of drunk driving or not wearing a seat belt but this year it seemed like the common theme was hit and runs…

In Slidell on Saturday, 48-year-old Larry Kellett allegedly hit a bicyclist, removed him from his windshield and fled the scene. Sandifer says on Friday night, a pedestrian was hit in St. John the Baptist Parish while walking across US 61 and police are still investigating.

Sunday morning in Winn Parish, a 21-year-old fell out the bed of a pickup truck and was killed. LSP are still searching for the driver and vehicle. Sandifer says hit and runs are becoming more common…

Starting this week, nearly 500 Louisiana educators will begin training to become mentors to future teachers.  This is the first step in a three-year effort to train at least 25-hundred public school teachers.  Assistant Superintendent for Talent Hannah Dietsch says nearly 500 veteran educators were nominated by their local school systems to participate in the mentor training program…

Dietsch says the mentors will receive professional training on how to train new teachers, who will participate in the a year long residency program so they are better equipped to handle their own classroom…

Dietsch says they picked participants with a track record of proven success to become a mentor representing 68 school systems statewide.  The training sessions will be held in several locations, including Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette and Shreveport…

With his 347 yard passing performance in the victory over Texas A-and-M, LSU’s Danny Etling became the fifth quarterback to throw for over 2,000 yards in multiple seasons. Jeff Wickersham, Zach Mettenberger, Toddy Hodson and JaMarcus Russell are the others. Etling is glad he ended up at LSU, after losing his job as the starter at Purdue…

A Slidell man is facing several charges including negligent homicide after hitting a bicyclist on US 190, removing the victim from his windshield and then leaving him in a ditch. State Police Trooper Dustin Dwight says they are still trying to figure out why 48-year-old Larry Kellett left the scene, creating more of a problem for himself…

Former LSU Head Football Coach Les Miles is sticking around Baton Rouge.  Reports indicate Miles has purchased a home in the Settlement at Willow Grove for one-point-three-million-dollars.  He recently sold his home in Bocage Lakes for one-point-45-million-dollars.   He still owns a lot there.  He is currently working as a television analyst for FOX and ESPN.

State Police arrested a Slidell man after he allegedly hit a bicyclist, removed him from his windshield and left the scene.  Trooper Dustin Dwight says 48-year-old Larry Kellett struck 59-year-old Calvin Lefort Jr. of Slidell on US 190 Saturday night.  After the accident, it was fairly easy to find out where Kellett went.  Dwight says all they had to do was follow a fluid trail…

LSU announces they are changing the names of many streets on its Baton Rouge campus, including the well known Raphael Semmes Road, which is named after a Confederate officer. The street name will change to Veterans Drive. This is part of a strategy by the university to make it easier to find buildings on campus using a GPS.

 

State Police are searching for a pickup truck driver after a man riding in the bed fell out and died yesterday in Winn Parish. Master Trooper Scott Moreau says they are trying to determine how 21-year-old Hunter Thomisee of Montgomery fell out and why he was in the bed of the pickup. He says they need the public’s help to find the vehicle and it’s driver.

It’s Cyber Monday and the Attorney General’s Office is reminding consumers to be aware of potential online scams. Press Secretary for the A-G Ruth Wisher suggests avoiding online purchases while using a public wifi network.

Hamilton was also named in the Zachary murder of a man at a grocery store. Hamilton’s mother was also arrested accused of taking her son to Alabama.

The swearing-in ceremony for John Schroder as State Treasurer will take place on Tuesday, December 5th. Schroder, a Republican, received 56 percent of the vote, to Democratic opponent Derrick Edwards’ 44 percent during the November 18th runoff election. The turnout was record-low.

Construction begins today on a new oyster reef in Calcasieu Lake near Lake Charles. Even though it will take a couple of years to have a fully developed oyster population, Assistant Secretary for Fisheries Patrick Banks says the reef will begin to offer rod and reel fisherman a new place to drop a line…

State Police are on the lookout for a person who drove away from an accident in Montgomery in Grant Parish early Sunday.  Troopers say 21-year-old Hunter Thomisee was in the back of a pickup, when he fell out onto the road and died.  Police don’t know how he fell out.  When they arrived on the scene, the truck took off on Highway 34 traveling west.  Anyone with information can call State Police 318-487-5911…
