The legislation was inspired by a nursing home incident where a family suspected that the staff was physically abusing their relative.

And a Winnfield family came home to a heck of a surprise, finding a giant black bear wandering their back yard with no apparent way out. Authorities believe the bear wandered into a tree and while climbing around got stuck in the fenced in yard. The bear was finally tranquilized after a few hours and safety removed.

Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore had a sensational rookie campaign that resulted in him being named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Lattimore was motivated to have a big season last year, because 10 other teams passed up on him. The former first round pick says he still has something to prove…

LSU basketball coach Will Wade has added two junior college transfers to fill out the rest of his roster for the 2018-19 season. The Tigers have signed six-foot-one guard Danya Kingsby from College of Southern Idaho and six-foot-nine power forward Courtese Cooper from Triton College in Illinois. Kingsby averaged 13 points a game last season, while Cooper averaged 10 points a contest at Triton.

Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the House won’t have much time to debate the budget and tax plans the Senate agrees too, with a Monday at midnight deadline approaching.

A six-year-old in Opelousas is reportedly listed in stable condition after suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities say foul play is not suspected and the incident remains under investigation. No other details have been released.

The Caddo Sheriff’s office arrested a young couple from central Louisiana who allegedly left their two small children in a vehicle with the air conditioning running, while they were inside the courthouse getting a marriage license. Twenty-three-year-old Courtney Carroll of Ball and 22-year-old Garrett Poole of Pollock were charged with child desertion.

Governor John Bel Edwards has signed several bills that strengthen Louisiana’s laws against hazing. Under the legislation, a person can be sentenced up to five years in prison if hazing results in death or a serious injury, also colleges are now required to teach students about the dangers of hazing and organiziations that knowingly allow hazing can face fines. Edwards says work on this issue must continue…

Two newlyweds have been arrested after leaving their kids in the car while getting their marriage license at the Caddo Parish Courthouse. 23-year-old Courtney Carrol of Ball and 22-year-old Garret Poole of Pollock have been charged with child desertion after a courthouse employee found the children in the vehicle with the air conditioner on, and a door cracked open.

The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane season officially starts today despite the fact that the Gulf Coast has already seen its first named storm of the year. NOAA projects 10 to 16 named storms, 5 to 9 hurricanes, and 1 to 4 major hurricanes. State Climatologist Barry Keim says we’ve seen an uptick in storm activity since the 90s, and projections will trend towards busier seasons until there’s a noticeable change in the pattern.

Last year’s historic hurricane season claimed lives across the Gulf and caused nearly 300 billion dollars in damage.

A major road closure is expected for the Mississippi River Bridge in Port Allen/Baton Rouge, starting Friday night at 7pm and ending noon Sunday. The eastbound lane will be shut down for some repair work. It’s the second weekend for the repairs. DOTD Spokesperson Rodney Mallet says if you’ve got road plans that lead you through BR this weekend, plan accordingly.
