A nine-year-old boy is dead and his 18-year-old cousin has been arrested in an incident that Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says was a negligent, but accidental discharge of a firearm. Kamone Thomas has been charged with Obstruction of Justice, and Possession of Marijuana, and Negligent Homicide. Lopinto says Thomas admitted guilt and said it was an accident that began with some horseplay.

After a 2 year stint in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Bayou Country Superfest returns to Tiger Stadium for its tenth anniversary over Memorial Day weekend.  Festival Producer Quint Davis says this year’s lineup for the 2-day festival is the best yet, and is expected to draw fans from across North America.

LSU is confirming that nine members of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity have been arrested on Hazing charges.  Arrest reports show pledges were forced to lie face down on a basketball court covered in broken glass while being urinated upon.  They were also beaten with pipes and doused in gasoline. This comes after Gruver Act flew through the legislature last year, and was publicly championed by a number of state leaders like Governor Edwards, who said they wanted to send a message with the tougher hazing penalties. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says that puts the student’s defense at a notable disadvantage right from the start.

Yet another Acadiana school has been closed due to an infestation of bats that are making their yearly migration from Mexico to their more northern breeding grounds. Franklin Junior High in St. Mary Parish will be closed today and tomorrow after officials discovered bats hanging out in the halls and flying around in the gym. Experts say they’ll be sealing up the building until the bats wake up to go foraging, and then locking the door behind them once they leave. A decision about opening the school on Monday is pending.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, Louisiana Family Forum has found the longest married couple in the state.  That title for 2019 belongs to Wallace and Gladys Menard of Duson who have been hitched for 80 years.

The NFL Network reports the league has rescinded Louisiana Tech pass rusher Jaylon Ferguson invite to the scouting combine because he was convicted of simple battery as a freshman in Ruston. Ferguson was arrested after a fight at a McDonald’s. The NFL has told clubs they will bar players from the combine, if a background check reveals a conviction involving violence. Ferguson’s agent says the NFL should allow players in Jaylon’s situation the opportunity to prove to potential employers they are remorseful.

LSU freshman defensive tackle Dominic Livingston who played in one game last season as a true freshman has entered the transfer portal, while fellow freshman defensive tackle Davin Cotton removed his name from the transfer portal.

LSU basketball remains in second place in the SEC after Tennessee stay undefeated in league play with an 85-73 win over South Carolina. The 10-and-1 Tigers are at 1-and-10 Georgia on Saturday, while Tennessee visits Kentucky.

Southeastern Louisiana moved into a tie for third place in the Southland with a 70-64 win over Incarnate Word last night. Senior Moses Greenwood led the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds for his 9th double-double of the season. The Lions are now 8-4 in the Southland and they’ve won eight of their last nine.

Northwestern State’s rally came up short last night as the Demons lost to Lamar 75-70. Northwestern is now 4-8 in the Southland. McNeese also came up short last night, losing to Stephen F Austin 67-57. And Abilene Christian crushed Nicholls 64-48.

Tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts UTEP. The Bulldogs have lost three in a row, but they are 12-0 this season in the TAC. The Miners are 8-15 on the year and have yet to win away from El Paso this season. Tip-off is at 6:30.

The Pelicans play their final game before the All-Star break tonight against Oklahoma City. What kind of effort will New Orleans give? It seemed like they gave up on the season in an embarrassing loss to Orlando on Tuesday. There are 24 games left in this season that’s going nowhere.

The activities are alleged to have taken place during the Fall of 2018, and all nine have been booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. The DKE charter at LSU has been revoked by the national organization. All nine are facing at least one hazing charge, some of the students are also facing additional counts, including 23-year-old Cade Duckworth of Lafayette who is facing three counts of hazing, along with second degree battery and false imprisonment charges. 23-year-old Malcolm McNiece of Baton Rouge is facing four counts of hazing and one count of second degree battery.

Beginning this fall, Louisiana will become only the second state in the US with military veteran centers on every college campus.  Chancellor of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System Monty Sullivan says the centers will be staffed with someone dedicated to working with them.  It also help veterans interact with other veterans on campus.

It’s been nearly a year since legislation was passed that would allow riverboat casinos to expand on land within 1,200 feet of their river mooring, and so far no ground has been broken on those sought after expansions. Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Jones says not all casinos will ever take advantage of the change, because in some areas the market just isn’t there to justify the money for an expansion.

A border wall deal has been reached in Congress that would provide 1.37 of the 5.7 billion dollars the President has demanded to construct additional physical barriers along the Mexican border. Senator John Kennedy says he’s not sure whether he will ultimately vote for the deal, but two billion dollars isn’t a bad start to southern border wall expansion efforts.

The legislation would also increase detention capacities for immigration enforcement agencies.

Congressional leaders have agreed to provide 1.37 of the 5.7 billion dollars the President has demanded to construct additional physical barriers along the US-Mexican border. Calcasieu Sheriff’s Deputies are searching for a mother who left her newborn Tuesday night near a Lake Charles Hosptial. The infant was found in a grassy area abandoned near a parking lot and authorities believe the child was alone for approximately 15 minutes before being discovered. Police are asking for help locating the mother. However if she had utilized the Safe Haven Law and given the child to an employee at the hospital, no charges would be pending. LRN
