The U-S Supreme Court has decided to hear the case of a Louisiana man who was convicted for murder on a 10-2 vote by the jury that heard his case. Louisiana law now requires unanimous jury decisions for all serious felonies. A state lawmaker who championed having the right to vote restored to felons now wants these same individuals serve jury duty with a bill pre-filed for the upcoming legislative session. 24th Judicial District Attorney Scott Perrilloux says his office will seek the death penalty against 21-year-old Dakota Theriot. He’s accused of killing five people in a multi-parish killing spree in January. Theriot pleaded not guilty today in the shooting deaths of three members of the Ernest family. He’s also accused of killing his parents in Ascension Parish.

Baton Rouge Representative Ted James files legislation that would give certain felons the opportunity to serve on juries. On March 1st, about 36-thousand people who have been out of prison for at least five years were given the right to vote and James wants to grant these folks with the chance to perform jury duty…

The former mayor of Vinton was fatally shot in Baton Rouge on Saturday. Police say 64-year-old David Riggins was killed during a struggle with 32-year-old Vernon Mosby on Saturday morning. Authorities say Mosby arrived at the home unannounced after learning through a dating app that another love interest was spending the night with him.

US Senator John Kennedy has introduced legislation that would give social media users legal control of content they post. Currently, photos, private messages, posts, and other interactions are owned by the network you post too, which gives companies the right to sell it to advertisers. Kennedy says it’s time to make that process more transparent.

The USA Today Network reports Governor Edwards and CenturyLink have reached an agreement to keep CenturyLink’s corporate headquarters in Monroe through 2025. CenturyLink’s current deal that includes 26-million dollars in grant dollars from the state, is set to expire at the end of 2020. The company employs over two-thousand workers in Louisiana.

US Senator John Kennedy introduces legislation that would prohibit social media companies from collecting private data and grants users the property rights to all of the data they generate on the internet. Kennedy says people are growing increasingly distrustful of social media and other tech companies, due to how secretive they’ve been about their data collection efforts. The Senator says this would force the companies to note exactly what personal data is being sold, and to which companies.

12 US Senate Republicans voted against the President’s national emergency declaration that would allow him to access billions in construction dollars to build an additional physical border wall. Senator John Kennedy was not among the 12, and says history shows the President’s move is legal. The opposing Senators voiced concerns about executive overreach, and the potential for the declaration to be a template for future Democratic presidents. Kennedy says he sympathizes with that concern.

A bill to abolish the death penalty in Louisiana will be debated in the upcoming legislative session.
