The Eastbank Little League baseball team visits President Trump at the White House today. The team claimed a world championship victory in August and Head Coach Scott Frazier says it all started at a press conference with a suggestion that the team should get a trip to DC if they were victorious.

The team is based in the suburbs of New Orleans and is the first team from the area to achieve the championship. Frazier credits House Republican Whip Steve Scalise for helping orchestrate the trip and says the meeting with President Trump will be very exclusive as the team will be in the Oval Office.

Frazier says he hasn’t seen much of the team since learning of the trip to DC, but says the are an excitable group.

A cold front is invading the state bringing with it a welcome reprieve from the heat for some, and an unfortunate reminder that fall has arrived for others.

State Climatologist Barry Keim says it’s a bit later than usual, but the state is about to experience some of it’s first light jacket weather of the season today.

Temperatures across the southern portion of the state will remain in the 80s today as the cold front works it’s way down from the north.

By tomorrow the cold will set in with temperatures in the 40s in north Louisiana, 50s in the central portions, and 60s along the coast. Kiem says prepare for some swingy temperatures if you’re heading to the LSU/Florida game.

Keim says the cold weather will be joined by some cold rains, but it shouldn’t be anything bad enough to cancel any of your plans.

President Trump is set to rally Republicans to vote for either Eddie Rispone or Ralph Abraham tonight in Lake Charles starting at 7 PM.

Republican National Committee Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany says the President is excited to be in Louisiana. She says it’s a pro-Trump state that needs Republican leadership at the highest level.

Earlier this week President Trump tweeted about the race, calling Governor Edwards a Pelosi Democrat, who would never be “for us”.

But Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Stephen Handwerk says President Trump’s visit shows just how worried Republicans are that they won’t be able to unseat the widely popular Governor.

Edwards is polling between 43 and 48 percent in recent independent polls, just shy of the 50 percent plus one vote needed to win outright.

McEnany says expect the President to pack out the Sudduth Coliseum with supporters eager to hear his thoughts on the election 12 hours before the polls open.

President Trump’s approval is in the mid to low 50s in Louisiana according to recent polls.

Handwerk says Trump’s visit just brings hostile, national style politics to a state that is learning to work together under Edwards’ leadership.

Thousands are descending upon Baton Rouge for the Top Ten showdown between the Tigers and the Florida Gators. Senior Associate Athletic Director Robert Munson says give yourself extra time to get where you need to go.

Pierson says the state invested nearly 40 billion dollars in infrastructure in 2019.

The first question asked at last night’s debate was about the hiring and firing of former Governor Edwards’ Deputy Chief of Staff Johnny Anderson, and his sexual harassment scandal. Former Edwards employee Juanita Washington accused Anderson of sexual harassment and assault while working under him in the administration, and Edwards says he was forced to resign less than six hours after the incident was reported. Edwards says the office has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, and the incident inspired a series of sexual harassment reforms in state offices.

An Associated Press story has brought to light that about 1500 immigrant detainees are held at the Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield. It’s one of eight jails in the state to house immigrants. The Winn Parish Sheriff’s Department runs the facility and Sheriff Cranford Jordan says they started detaining migrants in May and they have the room for them, because the state has fewer prisoners because of the criminal justice reform package approved in 2017…

Jordan says the contract with ICE has pumped an additional 35 to 40-million dollars into the local economy as the 275 employees at the prison have seen their hourly wage nearly double.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested one of their own this morning when Deputy Chief Gregory Longino was pulled over driving 100 miles per hour on the Causeway Bridge. He was also arrested on suspicion of DUI. Longino, a 29 year old veteran with the department, was not on duty and in his personal vehicle. He was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail and is being held on a $2,500 bond.

Congressman Abraham seemingly the focus of attacks from the other two candidates.  Eddie Rispone continued hammering his fellow Republican Abraham over a campaign pledge made in Abraham’s initial run for office that he would donate his Congressional salary to charity.

The primary is now less than three days away.

About 1500 immigrant detainees are being held in the Winn Correctional Center.  It’s one of eight jails in the state housing immigrants.  The facility is run by the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Cranford Jordan says the facility results in $35-40 million being put into the local economy and with the ICE partnership, the 275 employees see a pay bump.

The detainees are all men, ages 18 plus, and are kept separate from prisoners.

Louisiana has yet to get a firm grasp on normal fall temps this year. A cold front is expected to impact the state starting tomorrow, but today’s heat is still about 5-7 degrees above normal. National Weather Service Lake Charles Meteorologist Andrew Tingler says Friday morning’s low temps will be in the 70’s.

The Associated Press reports U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement is housing eight-thousand migrants at eight Louisiana jails. 15-hundred detainees are at the Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield. Some immigration activists say having the facility so far from border operations makes it harder for the migrants to obtain immigration legal services. But Winn Sheriff Cranford Jordan says they have eight courtrooms and attorneys are available.
