At least least 22 deaths in Louisiana have been attributed to Hurricane Laura according to the Louisiana Department of Health. On Friday, LDH reported that a 41-year-old man and a 47-year-old man died due to heat-related illnesses while removing debris in Vernon Parish. Nine of the 22 deaths so far have been from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Department of Corrections suspends a work program that places inmates in the state Capitol building after two inmates test positive. A department spokesperson says the inmates from the Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson began showing symptoms on Monday and tested positive Tuesday, both have been placed in medical isolation.

LSU Health Shreveport is reporting encouraging results from the first round of findings in its participation in a clinical trial trying to determine if nitric oxide can treat COVID-19 patients with mild and moderate symptoms. Many hospitals already have nitric oxide on hand and Principal investigator at LSU Health Shreveport, Dr. Keith Scott says if the therapy is given the overall greenlight, that means the treatment could be available instantly.

LHSAA director Eddie Bonnie tells lawmakers this morning in the House Education Committee that he expects they will be able to kick off high school football October 8^th through 10^th pending approval from his board. Bonnie also announced that they are ready to put players in full gear and resume contact drills without the state needing to move into Phase Three, and they can have up to 50 percent capacity at outdoor football events. The LHSAA executive committee is set to meet Wednesday and Bonnie sounds confident they will approve the restarting of high school sports.

The cap-strapped Saints are somehow in the running to land the most coveted free agent still on the market, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the team is sending an “all-out blitz” to secure the end’s services. The team only has about seven million dollars in cap space, but is reportedly working to restructure some team contracts to make it work.

LA Tech and football coach Skip Holtz agree to a new four million dollar five year, backloaded contract that should keep the Bulldogs coach around after seven years with the team. The deal is pending approval by the UL Board of Supervisors, a decision that is expected to be made this afternoon. Holtz is 37-19 with the Bulldogs, and has a career .567 record.

College football resumed last night with two games The University of Alabama Birmingham defeated Central Arkansas St. 45-35. Southern Mississippi fell to South Alabama 32-21. College football resumes on Saturday with six games scheduled. No Louisiana teams are on that schedule.

LSU football coach Ed Orgeron has been placed on the Bobby Dodd watch List. The Dodd award is given to the National coach of the year. Orgeron and Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney were finalists in 2019.

It is also the first holiday weekend many college students will be returning home for the first time. College students fall into the age group with the highest growing number of COVID-19 cases. Even the governor takes precautions with his own college freshman.
