Five inmates escaped last night from the Marksville jail in Avoyelles Parish. The escapees split up and are believed headed for Mansura, Bunkie and the Marksville area. The Avoyelles sheriff’s office will gladly take tips on any or all at 318-253-4000.

Governor John Bel Edwards has extended his COVID-19 mask mandate today. Citing a still very high rate of cases in the state, Mr. Edwards says the mask order stays in effect through October 27^th.

Five people were injured last night in an explosion in an ethylene production unit at the Westlake Chemical facility near Lake Charles. The unit was undergoing maintenance at the time. Three of those contract workers have been treated and released from the hospital; two are still being treated.

Governor John Bel Edwards has decided the statewide mask mandate will remain in effect through October 27^th, at least. He says the state’s mask mandate includes K-through-12 schools and college campuses…:

The governor is encouraged by recent COVID numbers, but says the state’s level of COVID is over twice what the CDC considers high.

Gas prices usually decline in the fall, but that’s not the case this year. According to the Louisiana AAA, the statewide price for a gallon of regular is $2.90. About eight cents higher than a month ago. AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says the big culprit in keeping pump prices high is the price of crude oil…:

Redman says most Louisiana refineries are running again, so hopefully, gas prices will stabilize and possibly decline as demand slacks off.

Houma Representative Tanner Magee says federal officials are working to get trailers sent to residents with significant storm damage, but red tape is his biggest concern there. He also questions why FEMA didn’t move faster to get mobile homes for survivors, relying instead on hotels and apartments…:

Entergy Louisiana VP of Distribution Operations John Hawkins says a month after landfall, he says the utility wouldn’t have been able to have the lights back on for as many customers as they do without the assistance of out-of-state crews.

Thousands of Terrebonne Parish residents are still having to resort to tents or storm debris as a shelter following the landfall of Hurricane Ida a month ago today.  Houma Representative Tanner Magee says his efforts to find decent temporary housing for his constituents have been frustrating.

On a positive note when it comes to temporary housing, Magee says FEMA has sent out a request for proposals for 10-thousand trailers to be located in Terrebonne Parish but says it’ll be a waiting game.

The latest trend for job seekers is to add their vaccination status to their resume and/or job application. According to an August Wall Street Journal survey of more than a thousand hiring managers, 70-percent prefer to hire vaccinated individuals. UNO Business Professor Mark Rosa says your vaccination status is almost like a credential now.

More and more Blue Roofs are being installed on homes after Hurricane Ida’s devastation, but as Dave Brannen reports, the application deadline is Thursday.

The FBI says the nation’s murder rate climbed 30-percent in 2020, compared to the previous year. The single largest jump in the agency’s history of tracking crime stats. LSU School of Medicine Criminologist, Peter Scharf says don’t look for things to get any better until the criminal justice system, ranging from the cops on the beat to the courts, can be improved after events like George Floyd’s murder and growing distrust of police.

The application deadline for the federal Blue Roof Program is quickly approaching for those still looking to protect their properties after Hurricane Ida.  Lt. Colonel Robert Warren Green says contractors have already installed at least 10-thousand no-cost Blue Roofs in the parishes impacted by Ida, and they’re moving at a pretty rapid pace.

The FBI is out with a report that shows the murder rate climbed nearly 30-percent last year. That’s the largest jump in six decades when the agency began recording crime statistics. Criminologist Peter Scharf, with the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, tells us the rate is even higher locally.

So far there’s only been guidance for a booster shot for the Pfizer COVID vaccine and not the other two, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson used in the United States. While some data might indicate less of a need for a Moderna booster, Tulane epidemiologist Dr. Susan Hassig says it’s hard to compare the long-term efficacy of the vaccines at this point.

A flash fire at Westlake Chemical in southwest Louisiana injured five contract employees last night. State Police says two of the injured employees have been transferred to hospitals in Hammond and Lafayette. A plant spokesperson says the unit which produces ethylene was undergoing maintenance at the time of the explosion.

The East Baton Rouge coroner has classified two-year-old Neveah Allen’s death as a homicide and more tests are needed to determine how the little girl from Baton Rouge died. Her body was found in southern Mississippi on Sunday and her stepfather has been arrested, but he’s not been charged with murder.
