The woman who blew a whistle on sexual misconduct at LSU, then filed a $50-million lawsuit against them has been fired by the university. Sharon Lewis had a high-ranking position in the Tiger Athletics department. She alleges harassment at the hands of former football coach Les Miles. At least one state teachers union is on board with Governor Edwards proposed budget plan that gives each teacher a $1500 pay raise. Louisiana Association of Educators President Tia Mills says that sum is a good start and a show of good faith by Mr. Edwards. She says even more surplus money could be determined by state revenue estimators – meaning possibly even bigger raises, and she looks forward to the debate in the regular legislative Session, starting in March…:

Residents of New Orleans are wondering what caused a loud boom over the city Tuesday night. Nearby Belle Chasse Naval Air Station says no supersonic planes were in flight at the time, NASA’s Michoud Assembly facility says it wasn’t them. The FAA, the Coast Guard, the airport … no one has an explanation of what residents heard. Many said it was so loud it shook their home.

In the last legislative session, the Teacher Recruitment, Retention, and Recovery Task Force was formed, and Dr. Mills says the shortage is due to multiple factors.

The proposed raises of $1,500 and $750 for teachers and support staff, respectively could increase if the Revenue Estimating Conference recognizes additional funds. Dr. Mills says she’s looking forward to the session.

Ronnie Johns, Chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board,  praised the collaborative efforts among agencies as the state prepares to go live.

LSU will not comment on the specific reason why Lewis was let go, but they say there have been 40 personnel changes within the LSU athletic department. Liberal U-S Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is stepping down from the bench. And while the court will remain majority conservative, Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says naming Breyer’s replacement is time-sensitive for progressives and democrats.

Ciolino says expect President Biden to name someone who’s middle-aged to replace Breyer, much like Donald Trump did with his appointment of Justice Amy Coney Barrett when she was 48.

On the campaign trail, Biden promised to appoint the first Black woman to the supreme court.

After Brett Kavanagh and Barrett’s appointments, there were talks of stacking the court and adding more justices. Biden appointed a commission to look into it and Ciolino says their report was not well received at the White House or Congress.

An explosion at a chemical plant in Lake Charles Wednesday morning injures six people. A spokesperson for the Westlake Chemical Plant says none of the injuries are life-threatening. The explosion created a large plume of black smoke and a shelter in place alert has been lifted.

Big news from the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. Mobile sports wagering will go live in Louisiana on Friday at 8 AM, except in the nine parishes that voted against it. Online sports gambling is expected to generate millions of dollars in tax revenues for the state and it becomes a reality before the NFC and AFC championship games.

The Edwards administration is proposing to use 550-million dollars to replenish the Unemployment Trust Fund that was depleted as a result of the pandemic and four major disasters. Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Cates says the trust fund must be maintained at 750-million dollars or a tax increase on businesses who pay into the fund goes into effect automatically, plus the fund needs money in case there’s another disaster…

Three Lake Charles residents were killed in a car crash in Costa Rica. News reports from the Central American country say 58-year-old Roland Terrell and his wife Terri, along with 50-year-old Racheal Abadie died when their vehicle was hit by another one as they were trying to make a U-Turn. The Terrell’s owned Terrell and Associates in Lake Charles.
