State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Lafayette Wednesday night. Spokesman Trooper Tom Gossen says Lafayette PD were seeking to arrest 18-year-old Travon Bonner for the shooting of a 13-year-old girl earlier that evening. The National Weather Service in Shreveport says at least three tornados impacted Bossier & Caddo parishes during fierce storms last night; all within 4 miles of one another. So far no one is reported seriously hurt, but SWEPCO says the storms killed power for tens of thousands of homes and businesses. It could be as late as Friday night before electricity is restored for all affected.

After 850 nursing home residents were evacuated to a warehouse in Tangipahoa Parish during Hurricane Ida and 15 died as a result, the legislature is responding with two bills to ensure the safety of nursing home patients. St. Martin Parish Senator Fred Mills’ bill requires all long-term care facilities to have adequate generator power. Mills says failure to comply could result in the health department pulling certification.

And River Ridge Senator Kirk Talbot’s bill tasks the State Fire Marshal’s Office with inspections of nursing home evacuation plans. Fire Marshal Butch Browning says his office supports the bill and they are ready to assist.

State Police is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place in Lafayette during the overnight hours. Very few details are known at this time. The shooting occurred on Paul Breaux Avenue at 2:30 this morning involving a Lafayette Police Officer.
