With the height of hurricane season just a couple weeks away, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration revises its forecast number of storms downward…slightly. NOAA forecaster Mark Rosencrans says conditions still favor an above-average season…:

The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal fire in Pineville Tuesday that took the life of an elderly man. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the victim was found in his bathtub, and the fire apparently started in the carport; perhaps caused by faulty wiring. Her advice…?

Rodrigue says the home had no working smoke detectors. The 71-year-old victims’ name has not yet been released.

Democrat Luke Mixon of Bunkie, who is challenging Senator John Kennedy’s re-election bid, says – if elected – he would vote to codify Roe vs Wade abortion rights in federal law. Mixon says the abortion bans that some states have put in place are too radical…:

State Wildlife & Fisheries agents, doing a routine life preserver compliance check on Oyster Bayou in Terrebonne Parish, wound up arresting the boat skipper for taking sharks over the limit, AND for possessing narcotics. Agents said they saw 44-year-old Anouda Lirette tossing a shark overboard as they pulled up. In addition to the sharks, they found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Lirette was booked into the Terrebonne Parish jail.

The state Department of Health reports 2085 new cases of COVID-19, with 677 currently in the hospital with symptoms. They also report 5 new COVID-related deaths.

A West Baton Rouge Parish cop is under arrest for picking a fight at a Baton Rouge bar, then following the victims home, where another brawl ensued. 21-year-old Zach Sibille is Port Allen Police officer. Because he took a gold chain from the victim, the charge is robbery. Sibille is on administrative leave.

NOAA has revised its earlier hurricane predictions for the 2022 season. Lead hurricane outlook forecaster Matthew Rosencrans says while conditions still favor an above-average season…

Cut 9 (09)  “…become hurricanes.”

NOAA expects three to five of those hurricanes will become major storms of category 3 or higher.

90 percent of all Atlantic tropical cyclone activity occurs from August to October, and that’s why Rosencrans says they revise their previous predictions for the season in August.

Cut 10 (09) “…landfalling storms.” 

He says they can only predict a week before if a storm will most likely make landfall.

Rosencrans says while the tropics have been relatively calm the last few weeks, atmospheric conditions for an above-average season remains in place. And as we enter the peak of hurricane season…

The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30^th.

Governor Edwards will leave Louisiana tomorrow for a trip to overseas. The governor’s office says Edwards will lead a delegation of business and state leaders on an economic development, water management and resiliency mission to the Netherlands and France. Edwards will use the trip to develop economic partnerships and examine solutions those nations have implemented for flood control.

That’s LSU marine ecologist Nancy Rabalais who says that’s less than half the size of last year. The dead zone is an area of low oxygen and she says a combination of weather events led to the smaller size this year.

Colorado State University revises their predictions for the 2022 hurricane season. Now they expect the season to have 18 named storms, that includes the three storms that have already formed. Earlier this year they predicted 19. State Climatologist Barry Keim says they decreased the total by one it’s still an above average season.

Education leaders and State Police will host the state’s first-ever School Safety Summit in Baton Rouge today. Education superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley says this is about keeping kids safe while at school…:

Brumley says they are expecting over 800 people at the summit. That includes law enforcement, government agencies and mental health providers.

The SafeSchools Louisiana app has been deployed to more than 500 schools across the state. Crimestoppers President Darlene Cusanza says the app gives students and parents a way to anonymously report on-campus concerns. She says the free app asks you what you need to report and how you know the information.

Rabalais says the goal is to get the dead zone to less than 19-hundred square miles by 2035 and more needs to be done to reduce the fertilizer runoff into the Mississippi River.

In the next hour we’ll get a revised forecast from NOAA on how many named storms we’ll see this hurricane season. So far we’ve only seen three, but State Climatologist Barry Keim says we are still a couple of weeks away from the heart of the season…

This morning NOAA will issue its yearly August update to the Atlantic Hurricane season and even though it’s been quiet so far, State Climatologist Barry Keim doesn’t expect their update to differ greatly from the forecast in May of 14 to 21 named storms, in which six to 10 would be hurricanes.
