The study involved 150 adults in the New Orleans area who were either pre-diabetic or had relatively mild cases of diabetes. A new program from the LSU AgCenter Flavors of Health nutrition initiative encourages people to use herbs and spices instead of salt because it’s a healthier option. AgCenter nutrition specialist Elizabeth Gollub says salt has a lot of sodium which is associated with high blood pressure.

The state and coastal parishes have finalized their 100-million dollar legal settlement with mining company Freeport-McMoran over accusations they’ve damaged the coast. Attorney John Carmouche says parishes can use the money to perform coastal restoration. There are some parish leaders who disagree with the lawsuits against oil and gas companies, but Carmouche says as soon as they lawsuits are settled, the oil and gas industry can thrive again….

Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen announced Andy Dalton will be the starting quarterback moving forward even with Jameis Winston a full participant in practice. Coach Allen’s decision was performance-based.

Louisiana shrimpers say their industry is in shambles. They say rising fuel costs, lax testing of imports, and most of all, competition from foreign imports are the culprits. Acy Cooper is President of the Louisiana Shrimp Association.

He says the imported shrimp is not only bad for the economy, but it’s also bad for consumers’ health. He cites a Consumer Reports study on shrimp safety.

Senator Bill Cassidy says the state will receive nearly 44-million in federal dollars from the Infrastructure Law that will pay for 111 new school buses. Rapides Parish will receive nearly 10-million dollars to buy 25 new buses. The City of Monroe School District will get almost eight-million dollars to buy 20 school buses.

Tomorrow, Southeastern Louisiana University will provide monitoring of Lake Maurepas’ (more ah paws). Dean of the College of Science and Technology Dan McCarthy says while AirProducts is seeking permission to store carbon dioxide beneath the lake, the company has given Southeastern a grant to cover monitoring costs.

If AirProducts is granted permits, the earliest it would begin pumping C02 beneath the lake is 2026.

Flu cases are on the rise across the country and according to Walgreens’ flu index, Louisiana is at the top of the list with cases. Dr. Glennis Gray with the Louisiana Office of Public Health says the last two years there was a dramatic decline in flu cases due to COVID restrictions but that’s changed this year.

President of the Louisiana Shrimp Association Acy Cooper says the feds regulate seafood imports and while Louisiana has a law requiring imported shrimp and crawfish be labeled, the state has no ability to stop the imports.
