Republicans Liz Murrill and Nancy Landry were elected as Attorney General and Secretary of State. Amar says voters typically perceive men as better candidates for political offices than women. She says for these two women to be able to be elected on a statewide level is huge.

Secretary of State-elect Nancy Landry plans to upgrade the state’s outdated voting machines after taking office in January. Landry says the legislature has passed laws to give the Secretary of State additional authority beyond canvassing to clean up voter rolls but each time it was vetoed by Governor John Bel Edwards. With a new administration, Landry feels those laws will finally be enacted.

After the 2020 presidential election, voter fraud became a point of contention and new state laws require extra steps for more transparency.  Among the requirements for new voting machines will be a paper record and multiple checks and balances to protect against hacking.

Grambling State President Rick Gallot says the 50^th annual Bayou Classic between Grambling State University and Southern University- is a celebration of football and family.

The daughter of former Governor Kathleen Blanco, Monique Blanco Boulet, has been elected as the new Lafayette-Mayor President. Boulet won a tight election over incumbent Josh Guillory, 52-to-48-percent. Guillory’s one term had its moments of controversy around multimillion dollar drainage projects, lawsuits and allegations of wrongdoing. Boulet says she will call for a public accounting of legal and financial decisions made by the Lafayette Consolidated Government, to build trust and increase transparency.

Three of the four teens charged in the 2022 carjacking death of 73-year-old Linda Frickey of Westwego have reached a plea deal that’s resulted in them receiving a 20-year prison sentence. Legal analyst Dane Ciolino says because of the nature of Frickey’s death, the teens were charged as adults.

Frickey was carjacked in New Orleans’ mid-city and died after her arm was severed during the incident.

The GOP will occupy every statewide office for the first time since 2015 and hold a super-majority in the legislature. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says they’ll have to find sound solutions to reversing issues that have been in existence for the last four decades.

In the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s race, a single vote gave Democrat Henry Whitehorn a victory over Republican John Nickelson. In Louisiana, political analyst Scott Hughes says a candidate has to request a recount and it predominantly involves the mailed-in hand-voted ballots.

The recount will be performed next Monday.

Governor John Bel Edwards and First Lady Donna Edwards met with Governor Elect Jeff Landry and future First Lady Sharon Landry at the Governor’s mansion Monday. Edwards has said a smooth transition is important to him and said he and Donna were happy to meet with the Landry’s as they prepare to take on their demanding roles. Landry expressed appreciation for the Edwards’ willingness to help with a smooth transition.

Much of Louisiana is under a tornado watch tonight. LRN meteorologist John Wetherbee says isolated tornadoes are possible, plus some straight line winds…
