Nearly a month after human remains were found near the East Feliciana Parish town of Clinton, sheriff’s deputies arrest a man in connection with the case. The remains were identified as those of Devante Petties, a known drug addict. A friend, 28-year-old Kenneth Muse, is under arrest for suspicion that he dumped Petties body after the man died from an overdose.

The University of New Orleans will launch six online graduate programs designed to meet the needs of working adults looking for an alternative to traditional on-campus education. Associate Vice President of Graduate School Nancy Biggio says this will allow the university to expand its current programs and meet working adults where they are.

The university will offer programs in Engineering Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management Executive Track, Tax Accounting, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, and Higher Education Administration. Biggio says the master courses can be completed in as little as one year. She says this allows students to get a leg up on the job at a faster pace.

Biggio says the university’s mission is to provide high-quality education and offer accessible online learning in an affordable way. She urge anyone interested to apply now to beat the deadline.

A three-vehicle crash in St. James Parish claims the life of 31-year-old Destiny Scott of Gramercy. Trooper Christian Reed says just before five PM Monday a Toyota Camry traveling behind Scott’s Hyundai on Highway 61 south struck the victim’s car from behind which sent the car into oncoming traffic. Then Scott’s car hit a Ford F-150 that was traveling north.

Scott succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Reed says it’s not known if the victim was restrained at the time of the accident.

The accident remains under investigation and why the Camry struck Scott’s from behind has yet to be determined.  Reed says however impairment is not suspected, but routine toxicology samples were taken.

Reed reminds motorists that state law requires every person inside a vehicle to be properly restrained.

The accident happened on Highway 61 just north of LA 3274.

Wildfires in Sabine Parish have destroyed at least 14 structures, nineteen vehicles and damaged hundreds of acres east of Florien. State Fire Marshal’s Office spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says they’ve been assisting local fire departments. She says the fire is contained but still active and crews are keeping an eye on the fire lines surrounding the blaze.

Rodrigue says they are assisting local fire departments with assessments of their needs and helping them obtain them.

Rodrigue says donations of water, food and other resources for fire crews are extremely appreciated and she urges residents to understand that there is a statewide burn ban in effect. She says the excessive heat adds another level of danger for firemen.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is partnering with the LPB to broadcast the Hall of Fame ceremony for residents to see their favorite athletes and coaches be honored as new members of the 2023 class. LPB’s Linda Midgett describes what viewers can expect.

Deputies in Sabine Parish say a spark from a downed utility pole triggered the wildfire that’s burned over 2100 acres near the town of Florien. They also report the flames have been contained. State Police are investigating a fatal 3-vehicle crash in St. James Parish Monday evening. Trooper Chris Reed says an SUV, driven by 31-year-old Destiny Scott, was hit from behind while southbound on U.S. 61. The impact knocked her into oncoming traffic where she collided with a pickup and went off the road and into a ditch. She died at the scene. Reed says it’s not yet known if she was properly restrained…:

The accident happened on Highway 61 just north of state highway 3274.

Deputies in East Baton Rouge parish say a body was retrieved Monday night from the Mississippi River; not far from the LSU campus. The coroner says the body appeared to have been in the water for “an extended period of time.” Deputies said there were no obvious signs of foul play.

Shreveport Police say a weekend double homicide at a local vape store was a robbery attempt gone wrong. Two men were shot and killed when customers armed themselves and returned fire. SPD is still investigating.

The Saints have signed running back Darrel Williams to the team for the 2023 season. Williams played his first four seasons with the Chiefs where he was on the team that won Super Bowl 54 and played last year with the Cardinals. The AP poll was released and LSU comes in at No. 5, their highest preseason ranking since 2016. LSU’s Week 1 opponent Florida State was ranked at No. 8. The Labor Day matchup will be the only top 10 matchup of the weekend.

LSU safety Greg Brooks Jr. was a leader of the defense last season but has not been on the practice field recently due to a medical condition, and he says what he has been dealing with and when he will be back.

Governor John Bel Edwards has declared a State of Emergency due to extreme heat and dry conditions across the state. Spokesperson for the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Mike Steele, says this is an administrative step that authorizes the use in emergency response efforts..

The heat has been responsible for some deaths and visits to emergency rooms have already exceeded the yearly average.

Right now, the Acadiana Region of the Department of Health is hosting a drive to collect hygiene products for students in Iberia and Vermilion Parishes. Regional Medical Director, Dr. Tina Stefanski says items will be collected and delivered to schools throughout Acadiana. She hopes the community joins the efforts of supplying essential hygiene products…

Stefanski says only new and unused items will be accepted. Items can be dropped off at libraries and health units in Iberia and Vermillion Parishes.

Two children died early Monday after the car they were riding in was rear-ended by a semi-truck then caught fire in Richland Parish. State Police say the car was slowing to turn left on Highway 42 in Rayville when the semi driven by 70-year-old James Barnes crashed into the back causing the vehicle to catch fire. A 9-year-old and 7-year-old were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation. 11:30

A Denham Springs woman has filed a lawsuit against her ex-wife challenging custody of their child. This is the first child custody battle between a divorced same-sex couple in Livingston Parish.  Loyola University law professor Dane Ciolino says this should be a fairly easy decision for the judge in the case. He calls it “cut and dry”…:

Anyone with information on Leon’s whereabouts is urged to contact authorities.

The state treasury department is partnering with LA Wallet to help reconnect Louisianans with their unclaimed property. As of Monday, the La Wallet app will feature an easy-to-use Unclaimed Property search, enabling users to effortlessly check for unclaimed assets in their name.
