A federal judge has ordered the state to remove all minor offenders at the State Penitentiary at Angola by September 15th. In her ruling, Judge Shelly Dick said the youth are not getting the rehabilitation they need. The lead attorney for the plaintiffs is David Utter says Judge Dick agreed with them that housing youths at Angola will only harden them…

The state created the Bridge City Center for Youth at Angola last summer after several violent episodes at other youth facilities. This is only a temporary setup until a new facility opens at Monroe this fall.

The Grambling State Tigers and the LSU Tigers will face off on the football field for the first time tomorrow night. GSU President Rick Gallot says this is a great experience for the student-athletes.  He says the football team is used to playing in big venues across the country.

A one-point-eight million dollar Louisiana Lottery ticket was sold in New Orleans for the August 30th drawing, but so far no one has claimed the prize. The Louisiana Lottery says players won 11.7 million dollars in August from lottery drawings and scratch-off winners claimed 16 million dollars.

LSU Coach Kim Mulkey’s ten-year, 36 million-dollar contract has been approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors. Mulkey will make 3.15 million dollars in the upcoming season. Board member Remy Starns was happy to vote for it and believes LSU has the best women’s college basketball coach in the country…

The Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice has commented on Friday’s ruling.

The ten-year, 36 million dollar contract for Lady Tigers basketball Coach Kim Mulkey was approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors. Only one board member voted against it and that was Jay Blossman, who would rather see coaches get huge bonuses for winning championships

Five candidates in the governor’s race appeared in the first televised debate ahead of the October 14 primary. Among the topics discussed was the state’s property insurance crisis. The sole Independent candidate Hunter Lundy says multiple hurricanes and the court system being shut down due to COVID only exacerbated the problem and there was little legal recourse.

A new law that went into effect this year allows more students to receive free meals. Rhonda Jackson, Director of No Kid Hungry Louisiana says there are three categories of school meals, free, reduced meals, and paid lunch.

The bipartisan legislation provides $860,000 in funding each year which allows 14,000 more students eligible for free meals, totaling 440,000 more meals for Louisiana students.

Five major candidates running for Louisiana governor outlined their ideas on the state’s pressing issues in the first TV debate last night. The first question thrown at them was how will they respond to the state’s crime issue if elected governor. Treasurer John Schroder says crime isn’t just about putting someone in jail…the state needs to put more into treating people with mental illness.

Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt says fentanyl is the root cause of our crime problem. While Independent Hunter Lundy says better-educated children would result in less crime. Landry plans to be at the next televised debate, a week from tonight.

A new ad campaign to bring more tourists to the Bayou State is underway. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Office of Tourism launched the “My Louisiana” campaign to promote domestic and international travel. Nungesser says the campaign shows potential visitors that Louisiana has something for everyone.

The campaign will use digital video, print advertising, streaming audio, still photography, visitor guide, and will run on billboards, in major outlets.

According to the Louisiana Lottery, $16 million in scratch-offs was won statewide, nearly $12 million from lottery tickets last month, and $877 thousand in fast-play winnings. And that’s not all, Louisiana Lottery spokesperson Dustin Annison…

LSU Coach Kim Mulkey, who led the women’s basketball team to their first national championship, has agreed to a ten-year contract worth 32 million dollars. The Advocate’s Scott Rabalais says the hall-of-fame coach has taken the program to the top within two seasons

This week’s U-S Drought Monitor reveals that 95 percent of the state remains in a drought. State climatologist Barry Keim says many parishes in the “extreme and exceptional” drought areas have gotten worse.

Jimmy Buffett, the legendary ‘Margaritaville’ singer, died Friday as a result of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare form of skin cancer. LSU School of Medicine Oncologist Dr. Brian Boulmay says the disease develops after long periods of exposure to natural or artificial light. He says if you see a flesh or colored mole, freckle, or bump on the skin, you should contact your physician

Men are twice as likely to develop this cancer than women. And about 80 percent are 70 and older.

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, who’s a physician, believes Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is fit to continue to serve despite two recent episodes in which McConnel froze and was unable to speak. Despite concerns about the 81-year-old’s health, Cassidy is satisfied with McConnell’s role in the Senate.

A Simmesport man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Avoyelles Parish on Sunday. 40-year-old James Dibble Jr. of Simmesport was struck by a Mazda 6 driven by 40-year-old Mary Cazelot on Old Highway 1. Cazelot was arrested for felony hit and run, obstruction of justice, and driving under suspension. The investigation is ongoing.

The top five candidates in the Louisiana 2023 governor’s race will face off in the first televised debate tomorrow. But Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry, will not participate. Landry says he’s concerned that one of the sponsors won’t treat Republican candidates fairly.

We asked Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy his thoughts on Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s health after the Kentucky lawmaker appeared to freeze in front of the public after a second recent episode. Cassidy says he’s pleased with the attending physician to Congress report.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry says the Tiger Island Fire, the state’s largest in history, is now 65 percent contained. Rainfall over the Labor Day weekend has helped but has also created muddy conditions that are slowing the use of heavy equipment.

18-year-old Jailyn Smith and two other teenagers have been arrested in connection to a shooting that fatally wounded 15-year-old Ja’Kobe Queen and injured a female at the 52nd Sugar Cane Classic, an annual match-up between Port Allen and Brusly high schools. West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Mike Cazes says even with law enforcement on-site the suspect ended Queen’s life Friday.

The suspect, 18-year-old Jarrettin Ranaud Jackson II, was arrested Monday in Baton Rouge.

Despite some rain over Labor Day weekend, the Tiger Island wildfire, the state’s largest in history, is still active. The fire has burned over 31 thousand acres. Beauregard Parish Sheriff Mark Herford says there are still a few active spots but the fire remains within the current footprint.

The Louisiana Forestry Association is offering up to two thousand dollars to anyone with information leading to an arrest and conviction. If you have information, call LDAF, Beauregard Parish Sheriff, or local law enforcement.

Louisiana has received a 73-million dollar federal grant to build electronic vehicle charging stations and the state is looking for businesses that want to operate and maintain the stations. Brooke Thorington has more…

The Tiger Island wildfire, the largest wildfire in the state’s history, is now 57 percent contained. Beauregard Parish Sheriff Mark Herford says more than 330 people are working to assist with the Tiger Island fire. He says this is an unprecedented situation and the statewide burn ban is still active.

The suspect, 18-year-old Jarrettin Ranaud Jackson II, was arrested Monday in Baton Rouge. Jackson is charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, carrying a firearm on school property, and possession of a machine gun.

State Transportation is looking to partner with businesses to build and maintain electric vehicle charging stations. DOTD Chief Maintenance Engineer Kevin Reed says the potential businesses will fund the remaining 20 percent.

80 percent of the costs of the charging stations will be funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Reed says he expects to see more charging stations as a result of the grant program in Louisiana around this time next year.
