Louisiana residents can now buy REAL ID licenses today from the Office of Motor Vehicles. In October of 2020, travelers will need a REAL ID to fly domestically without a passport. LSU Health New Orleans researchers find there is a link between certain types of cancer and sugary beverage consumption. Dr. Melinda Sothern with LSU Health New Orleans says added sugar was found to be connected to some cancers, not natural sugars.

According to authorities, a 16-year-old Woodlawn student has been arrested today by Caddo Sheriff’s deputies for posting threats about students and teachers on her Instagram account. The posts made on the account wally _ clown  threaten that Woodlawn students and teachers would be kidnapped and killed. Account followers reported the messages to the Sheriff’s office. Threats were also made against students at Fair Park High School. The teenager was booked into Caddo Juvenile Detention Center.

A report by ProPublica finds many state leaders along with residents are very frustrated with the Red Cross’ flood response efforts in Louisiana. The report stems from email’s from state officials showing concern with the organization, as well as many attempts to resolve the issues. Officials with the the governor’s office are reportedly meeting today with the Red Cross.

A committee searching for a new president of the University of Louisiana System has made a recommendation to the full board for consideration. Northwestern State University President James Henderson was the only person submitted for review by the committee. If chosen, Henderson will fill the position vacated by Sandra Woodley in December.

Hundreds of Denham Springs residents who flooded in Livingston Parish could be forced to elevate their homes. Mayor Gerard Landry says residents should appeal the FEMA ruling through the city and then their permit staff will need the pre-flood market value of the home and an estimated cost of repairs. He says there could be about 900 homes below the “substantially damaged” line.

The governor’s office says the trip to Cuba this week is still on as planned, as they have consulted forecasters regarding the approaching Hurricane Matthew. They say Governor Edwards has been on the phone with the national weather service and consulted with Cuban officials who said to move forward with the trip. There doesn’t appear to be any threat to Havana, where Gov. Edwards will visit. The storm is expected to hit the far east side of the island.

A scientist at ULM has received the biggest single grant award to a faculty member in the university’s history. Dr. Karen Briski is getting 1.7 million dollars to study a breakthrough treatment for diabetes. Police in New Orleans are investigation a tow truck crash that claimed the lives of three pedestrians and injured two others. They say the truck was traveling in Mid-City when it left the road and hit four people on the sidewalk. It then went through a fence into a parking lot and hit several parked cars. Three pedestrians died, and a fourth and the two truck driver were sent to an area hospital. The investigation is ongoing. No other details have been released at this time.

According to a report by CNBC, Bass Pro Shops is going to purchase Cabela’s in a deal worth $5.5 billion dollars. There are three of the outdoor equipment stores in Louisiana. Bass Pro has locations in Denham Springs and Bossier City, and there’s a Cabela’s in Gonzales.

Several state leaders, including the governor, are headed to Cuba today to continue trade and other talks. Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says the island nation will import up to $2 billion dollars worth of food next year, and as much as $1 billion of that could be from the US…:
