In 2020, state lawmakers approved a tort reform bill that supporters said would lower auto insurance rates in Louisiana, which are the highest in the nation. But Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says auto insurance premiums have gone up two percent this year. Insure-dot-com says 41 states have seen rates decrease.

An Arizona-based business has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in New Orleans claiming the state’s decentralized tax collection system is unconstitutional. Pelican Institute for Public Policy CEO Daniel Erspamer says the lawsuit was filed two days after voters rejected a constitutional amendment that would have created a central collector that would disburse sales tax revenues to state and local governments…

LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade was hit with a technical foul last night and then the Tigers went on a 27-6 run to put out the Liberty Flames 74-56. La Tech topped Jarvis Christian 91-61 and eighth-ranked Baylor beat Nicholls 89-60.

The Pelicans led by 19 points in the second half, but the Washington Wizards made that lead disappear last night as New Orleans lost in the nation’s capital 105 to 100. The Pels only scored 42 points in the second half. Josh Hart and Nickeil Alexander-Walker combined to go 4 for 19 from the floor.

Just days after voters said no to amending the state’s constitution to create a single tax commission, a federal lawsuit has been filed in New Orleans to force change to the tax collection system in the state. Daniel Erspamer, CEO of the Pelican Institute for Public Policy, says the current system conflicts with the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 Wayfair decision.

The lawsuit is being brought on behalf of a small online Arizona jewelry and craft supply company that estimates the current tax system in Louisiana costs it two-dollars-28-cents.

An audit from the legislative auditor’s office finds the Louisiana Workforce Commission improperly paid two-point-nine million in unemployment benefits during the pandemic. LWC spokesperson Chris Fiore says unfortunately mistakes were inevitable when considering multiple new programs were implemented without extensive controls…

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron said today that Max Johnson will start again at quarterback this Saturday. Garrett Nussmeier took a majority of the snaps in Saturday’s loss to Arkansas and threw two interceptions and his average yards per attempt was just below six yards.

Orgeron is not happy with the play calling including an ill-timed decision to have Ty Davis Price line up at quarterback when LSU drove inside the red zone and the play resulted in a turnover when Davis couldn’t handle the snap

LSU will host ULM this Saturday. Both teams have a four and six record.

The Saints suffered a gut-wrenching loss yesterday to Tennessee as the Titans held on for a 23-21 victory. New Orleans made too many mistakes, but Coach Sean Payton says there were some positives…

Brian Johnson missed two extra points and Deonte Harris fumbled the opening kick-off of the second half and the Titans scored a touchdown five plays later. New Orleans is now 5-and-4 and will visit the Eagles this Sunday. Philadelphia improved to 4-and-6 with a win over the Broncos.

The LSU men’s basketball team will host Liberty tonight at the PMAC. The Flames are a mid-major power out of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Nicholls took on the defending national champs, the Baylor Bears, and lost in Waco 89-60. Ty Gordon had 20 points in a losing effort.

An audit of the Louisiana Workforce Commission finds the agency made $2.9 million in payments that potentially violated both state and federal unemployment rules. Brent McDougall, Senior Analyst with the Louisiana Legislative Auditor says this is the fourth audit of LWC since the pandemic.

McDougall says the audit found cases where the overpayments had not been identified and cases to retrieve those overpayments have not been established yet. He says LWC already has already flagged some incidents of overpayment and is working with those individuals to recapture funds.

McDougall says when you look at overall unemployment payments during the height of the pandemic, the overpayments are only a small percentage and he acknowledges it was a very difficult time for the agency.

The audit found $898,000 in improper payments, almost two million of weekly benefits overpayment allowed during the period of February 2020 through April 2021, and almost $34,000 in duplicate payments.

Former New Orleans Mayor and Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu will serve as President Biden’s senior advisor on the distribution of Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act funding that’s being signed into law today. UNO Political analyst Ed Chervenak on what Landrieu brings to the table in this policy role.

The one-point-three-trillion-dollar infrastructure bill will provide funding for improvements to such things as roads, bridges and airports, and Landrieu’s influence could mean a positive impact for Louisiana.

The decision to tap Mitch Landrieu as a senior advisor on the investments being made under the historic infrastructure bill is being lauded by UNO political analyst Ed Chervenak.

Given all of the infrastructure needs and problems in New Orleans and Louisiana left unaddressed, Chervenak was asked about the criticism that may come Landrieu’s way as a senior advisor for dealing with infrastructure needs nationwide.

Louisiana is beginning to test whitetail deer for the presence of COVID-19 after the same animals tested positive for the virus in Iowa. LDWF Deer Program Manager Jonathan Bordelon:

Bordelon says the state is now joining with the USDA Wildlife Services to collect blood for testing from whitetail deer harvested by hunters in Louisiana. It’s not known if the deer can transmit the virus to humans.

Bordelon says that even if a deer is infected with the coronavirus, they don’t appear to show any signs of it.

Bordelon says it comes as no surprise that deer and other animals can be infected with the COVID virus, but how it’s transmitted is the bigger question.

A new report from Bank-rate-dot-com finds Louisiana ranks as the second-worst state for drivers. Bankrate analyst Sarah Foster says a main reason for the high ranking is that Louisiana is expensive for drivers, the state’s average car insurance rates are the highest in the country at 27-hundred dollars…

Foster says in addition to the high cost for drivers, Louisiana has a high fatality rate.

Foster says Louisiana’s auto insurance premiums are about one-thousand dollars more than the national average. She says the state also ranks 20th for the highest cost of auto repairs and 17th for the longest average commute time at 27-minutes…

The Ragin Cajuns have moved up two spots in the latest A-P Top 25 poll to 22 after a 35-21 road victory over Troy on Saturday. It’s the ninth straight win for U-L Lafayette, a school record and the Cajuns also clinched home-field advantage for the Sun Belt Championship game which will be played on December 4th at 2:30. U-L is at Liberty this Saturday.

Tonight, the LSU hosts the Liberty men’s basketball team at 6 PM. Liberty has won the last three Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season and tournament titles and went 23 and six last season. E-S-P-N U will televise the game.

In other college hoops action…Nicholls is off to a 3-and-0 start, they will be challenged today when they visit eighth-ranked Baylor. Louisiana Tech hosts Jarvis Christian at 6:30. McNeese faces Champion Christian College and Northwestern State is at SMU.

The Lady Tigers basketball team lost to Florida Gulf Coast 88-74 yesterday and the LSU women’s soccer team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 loss to Memphis.

Governor and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has been tapped to oversee the implementation of the one-point-two trillion-dollar infrastructure bill that is expected to be signed into law today. Landrieu was the mayor of New Orleans when the city was allocated millions of dollars in federal money to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.

The President will sign the historic $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill today. It contains a reported $6-billion for roads and bridges in Louisiana. Brooke Thorington has more.

Former Lt. Governor and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has been tapped to oversee the implementation of the legislation. Landrieu says their work will require strong partnerships across the government and with state and local leaders, business and labor to create good-paying jobs and rebuild America for the Middle Class.

Governor Edwards will be next to act on the Louisiana Pardon Board’s unanimous recommendation to posthumously pardon the late Homer Plessy. The man known as a 19th-century civil rights pioneer was arrested for trying to sit in the White section of a segregated train bound for Covington. Orleans Parish D-A, Jason Williams, spoke in favor of Plessy’s pardon.

Plessy died in 1925 with the conviction for violating the railroad segregation law still a part of his record.

And the Louisiana Supreme Court will likely have to rule on whether those convicted by non-unanimous juries should receive a new trial. Non-unanimous verdicts were banned in 2018. Defense attorney Hardell Ward represents two men who were convicted on either a 10-2 or 11-1 verdict…

Monroe Police have arrested a 17-year-old in Saturday night’s fatal shooting death of Derrick Cowart. He died at a local hospital after first responders found him inside a home with a gunshot wound to his head. The teenage suspect was booked a short time later on a charge of second-degree murder.
