The Saints have reportedly lined up four interviews. Current defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, Lions D-C Aaron Glenn and former Dolphins head Coach Brian Flores.

Split playoffs will continue on the 5A level as votes to have public and private schools compete against each other in the postseason in football, basketball, baseball and softball failed at the LHSAA convention. Division Four will expand its football bracket to 24 teams and hold the championship game in the Superdome.

The Pelicans had trouble making shots and lost to the Denver Nuggets 116 to 105 last night. New Orleans shot a season-low 5-of-34 from three point territory and 39-percent from the field. Rookie Herb Jones played well as he led the Pels with 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

18th ranked LSU takes on TCU in Fort, Worth, Texas in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge. It’s the first time these two teams have met since 1986. Tip time is at 11 AM. The Horned Frogs are 13 and 4 and receiving votes in the polls.

Big game in the Thomas Assembly Center this afternoon as Louisiana Tech hosts North Texas. The Bulldogs, the Mean Green and UAB are all tied for first place in Conference USA with 7-and-1 league records. Tip time is at 3.

Also today, the Cajuns host Georgia Southern, Georgia State is at ULM. Northwestern State hosts Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi.

An Associated Press report reveals that Governor John Bel Edwards knew within hours Ronald Greene died after a violent, lengthy struggle with State Troopers, but Greene’s family was told he died in a car crash at the end of a police chase. Greene’s deadly May 2019 arrest occurred as Edwards was up for re-election. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says it could have been damaging to Edwards if it became public that Greene died after he was beaten by troopers…

After the AP released video of the arrest, Edwards called the troopers’ actions unprofessional and disturbing and even used the word criminal.

An Associated Press report released today shows Governor John Bel Edwards knew the day after Ronald Greene died that he was involved in a lengthy and violent struggle with State Troopers. That contradicts the statement Greene’s family got from State Police which said he died in a car crash following a police chase. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says Edwards will face criticism that he didn’t more in the immediate aftermath of Greene’s 2019 death…

Mardi Gras Guide publisher Arthur Hardy says city leaders are doing all they can to keep the event safe and allow the parades to roll.

In addition to COVID requirements for parade riders, Arthur says krewe captains must also enforce mask requirements for Mardi Gras balls which fall under the indoor mask mandate.

15-to-17-year-olds who commit violent crimes in the 15th Judicial District – which includes Acadia, Lafayette, and Vermilion parishes – will be tried as an adult, instead of going through the juvenile court system. District Attorney Don Landry says it’s an effort to reduce the growing number of juvenile crimes…:

In November 2020, 55 parishes voted to legalize sports betting and today the digital dollars begin to flow. Eric Ramsey of the PlayUSA.com network expects plenty of people who’ve never placed a bet before to get in on the action.

The Saints have reportedly requested to talk with Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich as they search for a replacement for Sean Payton. Glenn was the Saints defensive back coach from 2016 to 2020 before going to Detroit and Leftwich has been Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator since 2019.

In basketball last night…the 12th ranked LSU women’s basketball team gave up 13 three-pointers and lost to Arkansas 90-76 in Fayetteville.

In men’s hoops, the Ragin Cajuns were upset at home by Georgia State 68-64, ULM shot 30-percent from the field and lost to Georgia Southern 50-45.

But Louisiana Tech dribbled past Rice 80-63 as Kenneth Lofton had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

In the Southland Nicholls defeated McNeese in Lake Charles 81-71, Northwestern State defeated UIW 79-70 as Kendal Coleman had 25 points and 13 rebounds.

The Pelicans host the Nuggets tonight.

Law enforcement officials in Southwest Louisiana announce a new Human Trafficking Task Force. Made up of local, state and federal LEO’s, prosecutors and service agencies and non-profits … the group will work to prevent sexual exploitation and aid victims. Brandon Brown is U.S. Attorney for the state’s Western District…:

He says they plan classes to educate workers at businesses like casinos, hotels & motels, convenience stores and more of the warning signs of someone being a victim of trafficking, so they can help by reporting suspected cases. Brown says, all too often, the victims are overlooked and tend to “fall through the cracks.” He says the task force is there to help them…:

Brown says human trafficking is, basically, modern-day slavery.

Interstate 10, which runs right through Calcasieu Parish, is considered to be a super-highway for human traffickers. Calcasieu Sheriff Tony Mancuso hosted the Thursday press event, to announce the SWLA Human Trafficking Task Force. He says he was moved by a discussion he had with one woman who was a trafficking victim, who felt her cries for help were going un-heard…:

According to the Louisiana Department of Health in addition to COVID cases on the downward trend, the most recent reporting week also shows flu cases declining. State Epidemiologist, Teresa Sokol says however the flu season is still active.

Sokol says the majority of flu cases in the US and Louisiana have been detected as the H3N2 variety.

So far, the CDC has reported five flu pediatric deaths in the US for the 21-22 flu season and Sokol says one of the five deaths involved a child in Louisiana. The state has been keeping records of pediatric flu deaths since 2015.

And even though early reports indicate that the current flu vaccine is not as effective with the H3N2 flu, Sokol says it is still your best protection.

If you’re a teen in the 15th Judicial District, which includes Acadia, Lafayette, and Vermilion parishes, and commit a violent crime you can be tried as an adult. District Attorney Don Landry made the announcement in an effort to reduce the growing number of juvenile crimes.

Landry says violent crimes among young people are a nationwide problem and Louisiana is not immune. Juveniles ages 15 to 17 in the 15th Judicial District who commit violent offenses will now be tried as adults. Landry says the increase in violence since July 2020 is staggering.

The Louisiana Children’s Code gives district attorneys the authority to prosecute juveniles as adults in cases such as violent crimes, for example, murder, attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, and aggravated burglary or battery committed with a firearm. Landry says it’s not just their charges that are impacted.

Landry says he’s instructing prosecutors to aggressively go after violent juvenile crime, and they will revisit the change in January to see if it’s made an impact in deterring crime among teenagers.

Joe Burrow will lead the Cincinnati Bengals into Arrowhead Stadium this Sunday with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. The Chiefs have scored 84 points in two playoff games, so Burrow knows that the Bengals will have to get off to a quick start offensively.

Wideout Ja’Marr Chase may know Burrow as well as anyone, with their connection dating back to the practice fields outside of Tiger Stadium. Chase says that when the game is on the line, there’s no one that wants the ball more.

Burrow has earned the nickname “Joe Cool” for his unflappable demeanor. He says that’s the way it has to be for success in the NFL, and this game is just another on the schedule.

Big news from the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. Mobile sports wagering will go live in Louisiana on Friday at 8 AM, except in the nine parishes that voted against it. Online sports gambling is expected to generate millions of dollars in tax revenues for the state and it becomes a reality before the NFC and AFC championship games.

The Edwards administration is proposing to use 550-million dollars to replenish the Unemployment Trust Fund that was depleted as a result of the pandemic and four major disasters. Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Cates says the trust fund must be maintained at 750-million dollars or a tax increase on businesses who pay into the fund goes into effect automatically, plus the fund needs money in case there’s another disaster…

News reports from the Central American country say 58-year-old Roland Terrell and his wife Terri, along with 50-year-old Racheal Abadie died when their vehicle was hit by another one as they were trying to make a U-Turn. The Terrell’s owned Terrell and Associates in Lake Charles.

State lawmakers on the Joint Budget Committee met Tuesday to discuss Governor Edwards’ proposal for spending surplus dollars on a new Mississippi River Bridge at Baton Rouge. Part of the governor’s plan is to set aside a half-billion dollars for the project, but Senate Finance Chairman Bodi White feels pressure to spend that money on more immediate needs…:

Meanwhile, House Speaker Clay Schexnayder released a statement expressing support for 500-million being set aside to build a new I-10 Mississippi River Bridge.

Governor Edwards is also proposing using over half a billion dollars in surplus money to help replenish the state’s Unemployment Trust Fund that was drained to pay unemployment claims during the first few months of the pandemic. Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Cates says the fund protects workers and businesses.

It’s hard to hear that after 15 seasons that saw the Black and Gold become a consistent winner in the NFL under Payton, who arrived in New Orleans a few months after Hurricane Katrina. Payton led the Saints to their only Super Bowl championship in the 2009 season, but he’ll never forget that 2006 team that came out of nowhere and went to the NFC Championship game…

It’s unknown what the 58-year-old Payton will do next. Payton says he would like to return to coaching one day, but getting a job as an analyst with a major TV network is a possibility.

So the search begins for a new head coach…NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will get a long look. He’s been Payton’s D-C since 2015 after three unsuccessful seasons as head coach of the Raiders.

The LSU men’s basketball team looks to snap a three-game losing streak tonight when the Tigers host Texas A-and-M at 8 PM. LSU Coach Will Wade the Aggies present another difficult challenge for his team…

The Pelicans were short-handed last night and lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 117 to 107 at the Wells Fargo Center.

Tiger Rag Magazine reports Sharon Lewis, a central figure in LSU’s Title Nine scandal, is no longer employed by LSU. Lewis sued the university in April for 50 million dollars claiming the school retaliated against her and created a hostile work environment after reporting sexual misconduct cases. LSU is not commenting, but Lewis’ attorneys call her firing a wrongful termination.
