Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is proposing to fine five insurance companies a combined 764-thousand dollars for improper activity following the 2020 hurricanes. They are United Property and Casualty Insurance, GeoVera Specialty Insurance, FedNat Insurance, Maison Insurance Company, and Allied Trust Insurance. The companies have 30 days to appeal.

Nationally new COVID cases are up about 10% over the past week and the average number of hospitalized COVID patients nationwide has increased by a hundred. State health officer Doctor Joe Kanter says they are keeping an eye on how things progress over the next few weeks…

On Thursday the state reported 504 new COVID cases, 60 hospitalizations, and 3 three fatalities.

LSU’s defense let them down again last night in a five to four loss to Arkansas to open an SEC series. A Jacob Berry throwing error in the first inning led to an unearned run and shortstop Jordan Thompson failed to handle a hard ground ball on an RBI single in a decisive three-run seventh inning. The series resumes tonight at 6 PM in Fayetteville.

The Ragin Cajuns had a season-high 19 hits in a 14-2 win over ULM. Tyler Robertson was four for four with a career-high four RBI. Starting pitcher Brandon Talley struck out a career-high eight batters.

Nicholls upended Northwestern State eight to two as Devin Desandro threw six shutout innings. McNeese defeated UIW nine to three as leadoff man Braden Duhon had three hits. Southeastern Louisiana edged UNO five to four. The Privateers and Colonels are tied for first place in the Southland standings at 6-and-4.

The Pelicans face the Clippers tonight in Los Angeles and the winner advances to the Western Conference playoffs as the eighth seed. Second-round pick Herb Jones has pest on the defensive side of the ball and Brandon Ingram expects the rookie will come up big again tonight…

State Police has released more details into Thursday morning’s fatal officer-involved shooting that involved the Lafayette Police. Trooper Thomas Gossen says 19-year-old Trevon Bonner, who was wanted in the shooting of a 13-girl-old, started shooting at officers first after barricading himself in his home. Gossen says when Bonner fired his handgun at officers, several officers returned fire…..

Lafayette P-D says the 13-year-old girl shot a few hours earlier is in critical condition.

The state health department reported 504 new COVID cases yesterday. On Wednesday, the number was only 275 new cases. State Health Officer Doctor Joe Kanter says 60 people are hospitalized with COVID and hospitalizations have been holding steady…

In Lafayette, a 13-year-old female is fighting for her life after being shot last night and authorities say the suspect, 18-year-old Trevon Bonner, was killed hours later after an exchange of gunfire with police at his home. Lafayette Police Sgt. Robin Green says a neighbor of the female victim heard the original gunshots.

She is listed in critical condition at a local hospital and State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting of the suspect Bonner.

State Police Trooper Thomas Gossen says when Lafayette Police tried to serve a high-risk arrest warrant for attempted second-degree murder on the suspect, Bonner remained inside his residence and officers tried to negotiate with him to surrender.

As to what motived the original shooting that remains under investigation.

Gossen says state police are overseeing the investigation of the use of force and reviewing body camera footage involving the SWAT team and the exchange of gunfire with Bonner.

Lafayette Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

A bill to require healthcare providers to offer postnatal care and to screen patients for signs of postpartum depression passes unanimously in the Louisiana House. New Orleans Representative Royce Duplessis’ says House Bill 784 was written with input from a task force studying maternal mental health.

Robin Gruenfeld with the New Orleans March of Dimes says the bill is about preventing infant and maternal mortality, and that postpartum depression is more common than you think.

Stonewall Representative Larry Bagley shared with lawmakers how postpartum depression impacted his wife and that it eventually led to her suicide. He says postpartum depression impacts women from all walks of life.

The Senate Transportation Committee approves a bill that would double the fine for a speeding ticket on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, which means the penalty would be 350-dollars. Senate President Page Cortez says speeding is a major issue on the bridge that connects Lafayette and Baton Rouge

The legislation would also double the fine for truckers who use the left lane to travel, instead of using it as a passing lane.

Under the proposed law, drivers would receive a couple of warnings before they are issued a speeding ticket.

Two bills to ensure the safety of nursing home patients during natural disasters pass unanimously in Senate Health and Welfare. Senate Bill 33 requires all long-term care facilities to have generator power. Mark Berger, Executive Director of the Louisiana Nursing Home Association says while most facilities have generators large enough to support their heating and cooling systems…

Berger estimates about two dozen facilities do not meet the standards outlined in the bill. Also moving to the Senate floor is a bill that puts the State Fire Marshal in charge of approving nursing home evacuation plans.

State Police is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place in Lafayette during the overnight hours. Very few details are known at this time. The shooting occurred on Paul Breaux Avenue at 2:30 this morning involving a Lafayette Police Officer.

Port Allen Senator Rick Ward has launched a social media campaign to drum up support to set aside 500-million dollars for the construction of a new I-10 Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge. Governor Edwards supports the proposal, but Ward says he’s heard from lawmakers who believe that’s a lot of money to set aside when construction of a new bridge is years away….

New Orleans felt like a basketball city last night as the Pelicans eliminated the Spurs from postseason competition with a 113 to 103 win over San Antonio in front of a boisterous crowd at the Smoothie King Center. New Orleans version of the big three played well as C-J McCollum had 32 points, 27 in the first half, Brandon Ingram had 27 points and Jonas Valanciunas had 22 points and 14 rebounds. When Mike Denbrock was hired as LSU’s offensive coordinator, he knew he had some work to do trying to turn around a team that finished 11th in the SEC in yards and 12th in points last season. The Tigers were a bit overwhelmed at the start of spring practices, but Denbrock says everyone has started to adjust to where the bar has been set.
