The Saints dropped their preseason opener to the Chargers 27 to 13 in Los Angeles yesterday. Spencer Rattler started at quarterback and in his five offensive drives, failed to put up any points. Tyler Shough led the Saints to a field goal at the end of the half, but threw a pick six in the third quarter, only to bounce back and throw a touchdown pass on the next drive. Shough threw for 165 yards and a touchdown and an interception. Rattler was just seven for 11 for 53 yards with zero touchdowns, zero interceptions and he lost a fumble.

The highlight of the game for the Saints was Shough’s 54-yard touchdown pass to Mason Tipton.

The Saints are staying in California for a few days to continue training camp and will return to New Orleans later this week to host the Jaguars on Sunday.

 

The Associated Press preseason Top 25 ranking was released this morning and the LSU Tigers are ranked ninth. Texas is ranked number one, followed by Penn State, Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia. Notre Dame is ranked sixth, Oregon seven and Alabama eighth.

Joe Sloan enters his second year as the offensive coordinator for LSU. Sloan is known for his ability to develop the quarterback position, most notably with 2023 Heisman winner Jayden Daniels. As Garrett Nussmeier transitions into his second year starting, Sloan says his quarterback’s improvements are coming from SEC experience.

Nussmeier looked good in the scrimmage on Saturday despite dealing with tendinitis in his knee.

Tropical Storm Erin has formed way out in the Atlantic. It’s not an immediate threat to the Gulf of America, but it could be our first hurricane of season.

The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office says two ten-year-old boys from the Ville Platte area were involved in an accidental shooting. Deputies say one of the children picked up a weapon that was supposed to be locked up and shot the other. We are waiting on an update of the injured child.

Pontchatoula’s Elmer Chocolate has been sold to Florida based, Hoffman Family of Companies.  But it’s not going anywhere.  Elmer CEO, Robert Nelson says the family wants to grow the company and keep it in Ponchatoula. A long-time fan of gold brick toppings on his ice cream, Geoff Hoffman says when he toured the facility, he knew Elmer was a company they wanted to partner with.

Tonight’s your chance to see ESPN’s “Above the Tide:20 Years After Katrina”.  The documentary looks back at the first game in the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina. It premieres tonight at six.  It’s directed by Julian Gooden who says Steve Gleason’s famous blocked punt signifies the rebirth of the Crescent City.

Inshore shrimp season opens today in Louisiana. It previously started on August first, but Louisiana Shrimp Association President Acy Cooper says the later start means bigger shrimp and bigger shrimp mean more money.

Ponchatoula-based Elmer Chocolate has been sold to Florida based Hoffman Family Companies. Elmer is known for Gold brick eggs and heavenly hash eggs, popular Easter candies. Geoff Hoffman with HFC says their goal is to grow Elmer, which has annual revenues around 100-million dollars…

Longtime Elmer CEO Rob Nelson and his brother, Michael, will remain in their roles as CEO and president.

Fall camp continues this morning for the LSU football team, but freshman running back JT Lindsey was not there. Lindsey has been suspended after he was charged with two felony counts of accessory after the fact of second-degree murder. He allegedly allowed two murder suspects from Alexandria to stay at his dorm on campus for nearly two weeks. Lindsey denies knowing they were murder suspects.

Outside of one long touchdown pass, it wasn’t a great performance by the Saints offense as they fell to the Chargers 27-13 in the preseason opener. Tyler Shough threw a pick six, but also threw a touchdown as the rookie threw for 165 yards.

Second-year pro Spencer Rattler started the game, but failed to produce any points in five drives. Rattler was seven for 11 for 53 yards with zero touchdowns, zero interceptions and he lost a fumble. Rattler is not pleased with his performance…

The Saints also only rushed for 61 yards and allowed the Chargers to rush for 148 yards. New Orleans also lost the turnover battle three to one.

New Orleans next preseason game is Sunday at home against the Jaguars.

LSU freshman running back JT Lindsey has been suspended from the team following his arrest on Friday for allegedly allowing two murder suspects stay at his LSU dorm. The two teenage suspect have been arrested and Lindsey has been charged with two felony counts of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier participated in a scrimmage on Saturday, despite dealing with patella tendinitis.

And offensive coordinator Joe Sloan says they are seeing good competition for playing time at the offensive guard positions…

Cooper says bigger shrimp fetches more money – and given how imports undercut local shrimpers, that’s very important.

Cooper says the 10-day delay in shrimp season yields a very significant difference in the size of the shrimp.

Cut 6 (10) “…25 a pound.”

How much shrimp grows is dependent on water conditions, including temperature, salinity and oxygen content. The delayed start to shrimp season also means the shrimp population will remain stable.

With this month marking the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a new documentary premiering tonight on ESPN takes a look back at the Saints’ first game back in the Superdome. “Above The Tide: 20 Years After Katrina” premiers at six local time tonight on ESPN. It’s directed by Julian Gooden, who says the film features interviews with all the important people who were with the Saints on that magical night in September of 2006.

The moment that Gooden was referring to, of course, was Steve Gleason’s blocked punt that gave the Saints an early six to nothing lead, en route to a 23-3 win over Atlanta and a 3-and-0 start to the season that would ultimately culminate with a berth in the NFC Championship Game. Gooden says no one in New Orleans, whether they were inside the Superdome or not, will ever forget where they were when that happened.

Cut 8 (07) “…they could take.”

Gooden says that touchdown, which is immortalized with a statue outside the Superdome, really was the rebirth of the city.

Gold brick eggs and heavenly hash eggs from Elmer chocolate are a tradition in Louisiana Easter baskets. Now the 170-year-old Ponchatoula candy company has new owners. Elmer recently sold to Florida based, Hoffman Family of Companies. Geoff Hoffman with HFC says they’re not looking to change Elmer Chocolate and the Nelson Family will continue to run it…

Having been a long-time fan of gold brick toppings on his ice cream, Hoffman says he was excited to partner with Elmer and when he toured the facility he knew it was a company they wanted to partner with.

Hoffman says it will be business as usual, and he wants to introduce Elmer Chocolates to new areas of the country. Elmer CEO, Robert Nelson says the family wants to grow the company and keep it in Ponchatoula for another 170 years…

Education Secretary Linda McMahon will be in Baton Rouge this morning as part of her nationwide tour. This morning, Secretary McMahon will be at Jefferson Trace Academy, visiting classrooms and attending a roundtable discussion on Louisiana’s literacy progress. In a video announcing her nationwide tour, McMahon said she will highlight what happens when local communities lead.

McMahon’s tour comes as President Trump seeks to dismantle the Department of Education at the federal level.

One of LSU’s strongest groups on the team is its deep and talented wide receiver room. The Tigers weren’t much of a vertical threat last season in the pass game, but with the help of fifth-year senior Chris Hilton, Sloan says the Tigers are able to add another element to its offense.

With fall camp through its first week of work, LSU is still trying to find its starting five on the offensive line. The Tigers are looking to replace the production of four key departures in the offensive line room. Sloan says the competition and position battle bring the best out of each player.

Shough completed eight of 15 passes against the Saints starters on defense. Spencer Rattler was 8-of-11 on the day. Cut 19 (19) “…back there”

LSU football coach Brian Kelly says quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has patella tendonitis. He says it’s not a big deal and the minor injury stems from  a previous surgery. Kelly Nussmeier threw the football at practice today and is expected to practice tomorrow.

Joe Burrow looked really comfortable last night in the Bengals preseason opener against the Eagles. Burrow completed nine of ten passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Ja’Marr Chase caught one of the touchdowns.

 

Saints veteran running back Alvin Kamara will not play in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Chargers. This will allow Kamara’s backups to get more work. Luke Johnson, who covers the Saints for the Advocate, says there’s a battle for backup running back between Kendre Miller, Cam Akers, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Velus Jones Junior…

Former LSU pitcher Paul Skenes pitched six shutout innings as the Pirates blanked the Reds seven to nothing last night. Skenes struck out eight as he improved his record to seven and eight and lowered his ERA to 1.94, which is the lowest in the Major Leagues.

A wing that’s been closed since 2018 at Angola, may soon be used to house ICE detainees. State leaders are reportedly in talks with the Trump Administration and renovations are already in the works.  There are concerns over housing detainees at a facility with violent criminals But West Feliciana Parish president Kenny Havard is confident in the staff at Angola.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is on the cover of “Time” Magazine this month, describing his relationship with President Trump as a good cop-bad cop scenario. Johnson was elected Speaker of the House in the middle of just his fourth term as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives – this after serving just one term in the Louisiana House of Representatives.

With this being Child Support Awareness Month, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services is bringing back its “On the Road Again” program. Assistant Secretary of Family Support, Sammy Guillory, says it’s an opportunity for noncustodial parents who lost their driver’s license because they haven’t been paying their child support to regain their driver’s license…

The former police chief of the small Lafourche Parish community of Golden Meadow is arrested for allegedly deleting a dozen years worth of files on his way out the door. Tony Dufrene is charged with injuring public records, computer tampering and malfeasance in office. Attorney General Liz Murrill says that data includes traffic citations and fuel expenditures.

Murrill says this all happened after Dufrene lost his bid for re-election.

Sources with the LSU football program say quarterback Garrett Nussmeier did not sustain a major injury, when he sat out the last few reps of Wednesday’s practice. Thursday was a day off and the media is not allowed at today’s practice, but we’ll hear from offensive coordinator Joe Sloan following today’s practice.

Tiger Rag Executive Editor Todd Horne says he’s been told Nussmeier is fine and that’s great news for LSU fans, because Nuss is essential for LSU getting to the playoffs…

Joe Burrow was in midseason form last night as he was 9 of 10 for 123 yards and two touchdown passes. One of the touchdown passes went to Ja’Marr Chase in a 34-27 loss to the Eagles in the preseason opener.

 

ULM football coach Bryant Vincent’s workload got heavier this week as he was named interim athletic director following the sudden resignation of John Hartwell. Vincent doesn’t look at Harwell’s resignation as a setback.

The state is expanding a program that puts money back on a SNAP recipients EBT card when they buy fresh produce. Tim Jenkins with the Department of Children and Family Services says the program started in Louisiana last April is open to all Louisiana SNAP recipients who shop at a Walmart in eleven parishes.

The U-S Gymnastics Championships get underway today in New Orleans and will continue through Sunday with 136 athletes vying for a spot on the U-S National team that will compete at the 2025 World Championships in October. Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation President Jay Cicero says the competition will feature five Olympic medalists, including one that will compete at LSU next year…

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is fine. That’s the word out of LSU after a rumor spread on the internet that Nussmeier suffered a serious injury towards the end of yesterday’s practice. LSU confirms Nussmeier did tweak his lower leg and but was only held out of practice as a precaution.

LSU brought in several new defensive linemen to contribute to defensive coordinator Blake Baker’s disruptive scheme. Coach Brian Kelly says the coaching staff has a lot of options.

The Saints offense looks to put out a dangerous product on the field with new head coach Kellen Moore. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (EE-lair) says Moore’s new system allows him to be the shifty back he knows he can be.

The Saints practice this afternoon and tomorrow in Irvine, California as they continue preparations for their preseason opener against the Chargers in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The Southland Conference and ESPN have announced an extension of its media rights deal through 2031. The agreement guarantees five annual events on ESPN linear networks, including men’s basketball championship game, women’s basketball championship game, one men’s basketball tournament semifinal, one regular season men’s basketball game and at least one additional football, basketball, softball or baseball event.
