NOAA will provide an update this morning to its Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook. Back in May they predicted between 14 and 21 named storms and so far there have only been three named storms and no hurricanes through June and July for the first time since 2017. But State Climatologist Barry Keim says there’s every expectation 2022 will still be an above-average hurricane season…

Keim says above average sea temperatures coupled with a La Nina, tend to create a busy hurricane season and both are in place.

That’s LSU marine ecologist Nancy Rabalais who says that’s less than half the size of last year. The dead zone is an area of low oxygen and Rabalais says a combination of weather events led to the smaller size this year.

The SafeSchools Louisiana app has been deployed to more than 500 schools across the state. New Orleans Crimestoppers President Darlene Cusanza says the app gives students and parents a way to anonymously report on-campus concerns, like guns, fights, drugs, or even potential self-harm.

Anonymous tips are monitored and once vetted, assigned representatives are immediately notified for engagement.

Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu is finally back with the team after missing practices to attend to family matters. Mahtieu was at practice this morning. Not at practice for long today were rookie left tackle Trevor Penning and defensive tackle Malcolm Roach after they were involved in a scuffle. Penning has been involved in several shoving matches during the first week of training camp.

LSU players reported to fall camp today. The offensive line is the biggest question mark, but Coach Brian Kelly feels better about the position group than he did in the spring…

Kelly will speak with the media again tomorrow afternoon after the team’s first practice. LSU is allowing the media to watch the preseason scrimmages.

U-L Lafayette athletics director Doctor Bryan Maggard has received a one-year contract extension which means Maggard is now under contract through June 2027. Maggard was hired in 2017 and last season the Cajuns won a Sun Belt title in football, baseball, and softball, the only program in the country to win all three, and a bowl game….

Maggard says the school also raised more than 30-million dollars, their most successful year in fundraising.

Nicholls running back Julien Gums is one of 35 players on the Walter Payton Award Watch List, which goes to the best FCS offensive player. Gums enters this season 103 rushing yards away from becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher. An injury ended his season early last year, but in 2019, Gums rushed for 12-hundred yards and 16 touchdowns.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu is back with the Saints after missing the first six days of training camp because of family reasons. Coach Dennis Allen says it’s great to have the Honey Badger back and because he’s a veteran player, he doesn’t think the time missed is problematic for the team.

Legislation to enhance and change oversite of the state’s medical marijuana program went into effect this month. Houma Representative Tanner Magee’s bill allows existing marijuana licensed pharmacies to have satellite pharmacies so the product is more accessible for those with cannabis prescriptions.

Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins has been disqualified for running for re-election. That’s because a Caddo Parish judge says the former U-S Senate candidate failed to qualify properly as he listed the wrong home address on his qualifying papers. The state health department has provided medical providers with a list of exemption that would allow for an abortion under the state’s new abortion ban. There are some doctors who are concerned that the list of exemptions does not contain enough medical conditions. Tulane University medical school Doctor Cecilia Gambala says the law does allow for abortions under situations NOT listed within the language of the law, but it requires two agreeing doctors to sign off on the procedure…:

The Louisiana Department of Health has released a list of medical exemptions that would allow for the termination of a pregnancy under the state’s abortion ban. But Cecilia Gambala with the Tulane University Medical School is surprised certain medical exemptions are not listed like the permature eruption of membranes, which results in a stillbirth. Gambala says deficiencies in the abortion law can be corrected by amending the law in the next legislative session…

It’s report day for many college football teams today. Expectations are not high around the league as the LSU Tigers are picked to finish fifth in the SEC West, but Coach Brian Kelly says their offseason conditioning program has the team prepared to play in Atlanta for a championship

The NFL has suspended Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and fined him one-point-five million dollars for tampering with former Saints Coach Sean Payton and Tom Brady. Miami has also lost a first-round pick in 2023 and a third round pick in 2024. The Dolphins discussed having Sean Payton as their head coach with Payton’s agent, while Payton was still coaching for the Saints.

Ragin Cajuns athletics director Bryan Maggard has received a one-year contract extension that keeps Maggard under contract at UL Lafayette through June 2027. Maggard is leading the effort to renovate Cajun Field and he’s looking to upgrade several other facilities….

The state Department of Health releases a list of all the accepted medical exemptions from the abortion ban law. However, some physicians feel the list falls short of the mark. Tulane University Medical School Dr. Cecilia Gambala says there are concerns about what is not on that list…:

Incumbent Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins has been disqualified from running for another term in office this fall. A Caddo judge ruled Perkins violated election law by giving an incorrect address on paperwork while qualifying for the race. “LAPolitics.com” publisher Jeremy Alford …:

The Louisiana Workforce Commission launches Tech Ready Louisiana a free online learning platform to help thousands of people learn a new skill or even receive certification through online courses. Brooke Thorington explains.

The NFL has taken away the Miami Dolphins first round pick this year after the league determined owner Stephen Ross and vice chairman Bruce Beal spoke with Sean Payton’s agent about becoming the Dolphins next head coach before Payton announced his retirement from coaching. The Dolphins also made impermissible communication with Tom Brady when he was the quarterback of the Patriots. Ross has been suspended and the organization fined one-point five million dollars.

The Saints had to replace their 2021 starting safeties in the offseason. Malcolm Jenkins retired and Marcus Williams signed with the Ravens. Linebacker Demario Davis likes the new additions…

Woodlawn of Baton Rouge Quarterback Rickie Collins decommitted from Purdue last night and there’s speculation Collins could join LSU’s 2023 recruting class. 24-7 sports ranks Collins as the 13th best quarterback in the nation and 12th best recruit in Louisiana. The Tigers do not have a quarterback in their 2023 recruiting class.

The LSU Board of Supervisors has approved the contract for new men’s basketball coach Matt McMahon. McMahon’s seven year deal is worth about 20-million dollars and his average yearly salary is close to three million dollars. He reportedly made 500-thousand dollars per year at Murray State.

Louisiana is receiving 134 million dollars in federal money to offset the effects of climate change and reduce chronic flooding. Louisiana Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says projects that will receive this funding are currently being identified…

Wilson says the 134 million dollars will be spread out over the next five years, so the state is expected to receive 25 million dollars this fiscal year….

Wilson says the money can also be used to update pumping capacity.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon wants the state to set aside a pot of money to lure new insurance companies to Louisiana. Donelon says his agency did the same after 2006 Hurricanes Katrina & Rita overwhelmed insurers with over 700-thousand claims. That resulted in companies leaving the state and forcing thousands to the state’s bulwark insurer, Louisiana Citizens. He says, back then, an incentive program successfully brought a number of new companies to take on Louisiana coverage…:

Donelon says that program successfully employed a fund of over $29-million state dollars, and brought new property insurers to help reduce the Louisiana Citizens book of business…:

Over 90-thousand homes and businesses were left without coverage, when several companies pulled out of Louisiana. Many had to go with Louisiana Citizens.

Donelon has spoken with House & Senate insurance committee heads about the plan, and says he’ll talk soon with the Governor, Senate President and House Speaker to make his request. He says a lot of federal recovery & pandemic money has flowed into Louisiana…:

The next time you’re in the Dome watching the Saints, thanks to a new partnership with Waitr, soon to be known as ASAP, you won’t have to stand in line to order concessions. Dean Turcol with ASAP says you can use your handy app to order food and then you’ll get a notice when to pick it up.
