Preseason camp is underway for the LSU Tigers as the Bayou Bengals are 30 days away from the season opener against Florida State in the Superdome. That’s when the Brian Kelly era will officially kick off. The first-year coach is still getting to know his team including his star wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, who he watched practice for the first time yesterday

Kelly says running back Tre Bradford is no longer at LSU. Bradford appeared in one game after transferring from Oklahoma.

In baseball, V-C-U infielder Ben Nippolt plans to transfer to LSU. He’s a versatile infielder who hit . 308 with two home runs and 31 RBIs in 34 games for the Rams last season.

Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu says he’s happy to be back after missing the first six training camp practices. Mathieu is not saying publicly while he was away, but appreciates the support he’s received from the organization.

Mathieu is expected to start at safety. Cornerback Bradley Roby is also expected to make a significant impact this season. He was acquired just four days before the season opener last year and Coach Dennis Allen says Roby looks more comfortable this year…

The Saints have also reported re-signed linebacker Kiki Alonso. The 32-year-old has not played in the NFL since tearing his A-C-L with the Saints late in the 2019 season.

Governor John Bel Edwards is off to Europe today to swap flood control challenges with the Netherlands.

The governor will see firsthand one of the Netherlands’ most ambitious and innovative flood control infrastructure innovations and a water research campus in Delft. Edwards will also make a stop in France to raise awareness about a 400-million dollar capital campaign for the World War Two Museum in New Orleans.

Entergy says the doubling of natural gas prices from June of last year to June of this year has resulted in the higher than normal electric bills this summer. But Public Service Commissioner Craig Greene says there should be incentives for utility providers who lock in prices early and pass those savings to ratepayers…

The governor hosted a ceremonial bill signing Thursday at the Capitol, to herald in a package of new bills providing for improved, cutting-edge cancer care. Among those in attendance, former state representative and cancer survivor Julie Stokes. She says one bill will expand access to so-called precision medicine, by requiring health care insurers to cover it. Stokes says precision medicine is a more focused method than chemotherapy…:

Stokes is the founder of SCAN, the Survivors Cancer Action Network. She says the precision medicine bill couples with another bill establishing enhanced “biomarker” testing, to detect possible genetic causes of cancers and possible mutations…:

Another bill in the package provides for health insurers to cover biomarker testing for babies in natal intensive care, to help them get out of a NICU faster and live normal lives. The final bill paves the way for patients to have easier access to their own medical records, so they can navigate cancer treatments with fewer problems. Stokes says the bills, and precision medicine treatments, are a major step in health care for Louisianans…:

The governor says Louisiana’s experience in dealing with rising waters caused by climate change is valuable to European governments facing the same challenges.

The governor adds that innovations to fight climate change actually bring with them economic development opportunities involving new environmentally-friendly projects.

The governor will also travel to France to raise awareness about a 400-million dollar capital campaign for the National World War Two Museum. Edwards says he’ll also use the trip to advance Louisiana’s economic interests with major international companies and discuss the energy industry’s transition. The delegation is scheduled to return on Sunday, August 14th.

High utility bills continue to plague residents and PSC Commissioner Craig Greene says they are looking at ways to help lower rates. He says the commission wants utility providers to become customer service-focused, more energy efficient, and look at long-term resiliency.

He says you can ask your local PSC office to review your bill for possible errors.

Greene says even though companies like Entergy spent $4.5 billion to restore power after the hurricanes, they have to be reimbursed for that cost which falls on the ratepayer. Greene says he’s often asked if the company is going to send their shareholders a billion dollars why can’t they chip in on repairs?

The price of natural gas is at record high levels and Greene says the current structure does not incentivize utility providers to lock in prices early and pass those savings along to the ratepayer.

Greene says they are also lobbying the federal government to pay for restoration costs instead of the consumer.

Monkeypox has been declared a health emergency in the US, and LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine is hosting an event today to give healthcare professionals the most up-to-date information. Infectious Disease Professor Dr. Michael Hangensee (Hagen-see) says they’ll look at the recent spread of the virus…

Hagensee says treatment includes the medicine T-pox, which can be given by pill or intravenously for severe cases…

Monkeypox is currently spread mostly among homosexual men and Hagansee says healthcare officials in the state are trying to prevent an outbreak during Decadence Labor Day Weekend, but that being said…

As of Thursday, the state reported 69 cases in the state, an increase of 11 from Wednesday.

Kelly announced after the team’s first practice that running back Tre Bradford is no longer at LSU. Bradford appeared in one game after transferring from Oklahoma. But LSU still has a lot of options at running back led by John Emery Junior, Penn State transfer Noah Cain and Josh Williams who scored two touchdowns in the spring game. Kelly says they’ll also get a chance to carry the rock…

Mathieu missed the first six training camp practices to deal with a personal matter. The Honey Badger has been limited in the first two practices he’s participated in, but the ten-year veteran knows the number of reps he’s involved in will only increase….

Meanwhile, defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is limiting his activity because he wants a new contract. Gardner-Johnson is entering the final season of his rookie contract. He’s become one of the NFL’s top slot cornerbacks.

The battle for starting quarterback at Louisiana Tech is officially underway as the Bulldogs have started preseason camp. First-year head coach Sonny Cumbie says Matthew Downing and Parker McNeil are the two with the most experience, but that doesn’t mean others can’t win the job. Cumbie says as he watches the Q-B battle it’s important that the Q-Bs just focus on their performance…

In recruiting news….Evangel defensive back Kody Jackson has committed to the Ragin Cajuns. Jackson is also a good baseball player and turned down an offer from Louisiana Tech.

Governor Edwards will leave Louisiana tomorrow for a trip to overseas. The governor’s office says Edwards will lead a delegation of business and state leaders on an economic development, water management and resiliency mission to the Netherlands and France. Edwards will use the trip to develop economic partnerships and examine solutions those nations have implemented for flood control.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has provided more details on a fatal house fire in Pineville on Tuesday morning. Office spokesperson Ashely Rodrigue says when the Alpine Fire Department responded to the call, they found a male victim alone in the bathtub.

Rodrigue says investigators have determined the fire began in the carport area and it could have been an electrical malfunction.

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles is reminding residents to prepare sooner rather than later to get the REAL ID card. OMV spokesperson Matthew Boudreaux says beginning May 3rd, citizens 18 years and older will need to present a REAL ID driver’s license or passport to fly domestically or enter a federal building

The Louisiana Department of Education says public school students performed better on LEAP tests during the 2021-22 school year after seeing test scores fall in the previous school year due to the pandemic. Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley says fewer students scored unsatisfactory, including a three-point decrease in students scoring unsatisfactory in math…

Today the state department of education is hosting a school safety summit in Baton Rouge. Over 800 people are in attendance that includes local school leaders, law enforcement, governmental agencies and mental health experts. The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is smaller than last year. It’s at 3,275 square miles. That’s less than half the size of last year. LSU marine ecologist Nancy Rabalais says a combination of weather events led to the smaller size. She says drought conditions in the Midwest reduced the water flow from the Mississippi River into the Gulf…

Rabalais says the goal is to get the dead zone to less than 19-hundred square miles by 2035 and more needs to be done to reduce the fertilizer runoff into the Mississippi River.

In the next hour we’ll get a revised forecast from NOAA on how many named storms we’ll see this hurricane season. So far we’ve only seen three, but State Climatologist Barry Keim says we are still a couple of weeks away from the heart of the season…

This morning NOAA will issue its yearly August update to the Atlantic Hurricane season and even though it’s been quiet so far, State Climatologist Barry Keim doesn’t expect their update to differ greatly from the forecast in May of 14 to 21 named storms, in which six to 10 would be hurricanes.

Offensive tackle Trevor Penning and defensive lineman Malcolm Roach hit the showers early yesterday after both got into a scuffle. Wide receiver Michael Thomas is now participating in seven on seven drills, while defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is limiting his activity as he seeks a new contract.

A vote on a proposal to change the transfer rules allowing players an unlimited number of times they can transfer to another school has been postponed. The NCAA Division One Board of Directors wants to see more research on the proposal before taking a vote. They plan to meet again on August 31st.
