During the legislative session, lawmakers will debate a bill that will triple the pay of legislators from $16,800 a year to 60-thousand dollars. The bill’s author Gretna Representative Joe Marino says lawmakers have not received a raise in over 40 years. Governor John Bel Edwards is not against the bill, but says there are more pressing income matters…

A bill to make operating rooms safer advances from Senate Health and Welfare. Bill author, Lafayette Senator Gerald Boudreaux says heat-producing equipment used in surgeries can create a smoke plume that could obscure a physician’s view.

The legislation requires healthcare facilities to adopt policies addressing this issue.

UL Lafayette’s CAPE team of student researchers will design and build a small solar-powered satellite that will be used by NASA to help keep astronauts safe from radiation. Electrical and Computer Engineering Instructor, Dr. Jared Tessier (Tess-see-yay) says the students are excited to have been selected for NASA’s CubeSat Launch initiative.

The satellite will orbit the earth at least twice a day and will gauge radiation in space through measurements taken with a neutron radiation detector. The satellite will be launched between 2024 and 2027.

DNA technology and good police work has led to a positive ID in a missing person’s case that dates back to 1986. The missing person has been identified as Paula Boudreaux of Golden Meadow. Her remains were found in 1989 near Slidell. Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre says foul play is likely..

In the years since she vanished, her son has grown to adulthood and both her parents have passed away.

St. Charles Clean Fuels is exploring the feasibility of building a four-point-six billion dollar ammonia production and export facility in St. Rose. If the project moves forward, the facility would produce one of the world’s cleanest sources of ammonia. A final investment decision will be made early next year.

Legislation to terminate the parental rights of the violator if a child is conceived as a result of sexual assault is heading to the House floor. Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response President Morgan Lamandre recounted a case in which a judge believed it was in the best interest of the child to have two parents, despite how they were conceived.

State Police has released more information on a fatal officer involved shooting that took place on April ninth outside of the La Bamba nightclub in Lafayette. Trooper Thomas Gossen says an officer working security detailed shot at 28-year-old Deiondre Solomon after he fired his gun at someone in the parking lot. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Authorities have identified skeletal remains found near Slidell in January 1989 as Paula Boudreaux, a 22-year-old woman woman who disappeared from Golden Meadow in August of 1986. Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre says the 33-year-old case at least gives Boudreaux’s family some closure…

Law enforcement in southeast Louisiana report a big break in a 33-year-old missing person’s case. With help from the LSU FACES lab and DNA technology authorities have identified human remains – found near Slidell by a hunter back in 1989 – as a Lafourche Parish woman, Paula Boudreaux, who vanished in 1986. Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre says what was a missing persons case is now much more…:

Attorney General Jeff Landry’s first television campaign ad for governor has hit the airwaves. The 30-second spot focuses on Landry’s plan to be tough on crime. ULM Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says the next governor will be focused on criminal justice reform…

The head of LDWF quit after he was implicated in a kickback scandal. Edwards appointed Montoucet to the post when he took office in 2016. He says he’s known Montoucet for years, and he hasn’t been charged with any crime…:

Meanwhile, LSU did not play well as they committed a couple of errors in the field, outfielders lost a couple of balls in the twilight and the Tigers pitchers walked six more hitters.

Louisiana Tech won its fourth straight as the Bulldogs knocked off 23rd ranked Southern Miss three to one. Solid pitching from Reed Smith, who allowed one earned in five innings.

Also last night, Southeastern clobbered Jackson State 14 to 4, Nicholls State crushed Mississippi Valley State 12 to three and Tulane topped UNO eight to six.

Tonight ULM is at Little Rock and Grambling hosts UIW.

New LSU special teams coordinator John Jancek met with the media as the Tigers get ready for their spring game this Saturday. Jancek is a former defensive coordinator at Georgia and Tennessee and this is his first stint as a special teams coordinator. Jancek says during his three decades of coaching experience, he’s always had a role in special teams…

Jancek was part of Kelly’s coaching staffs at Grand Valley State and Central Michigan.

Legislation to require fathers to pay for half of the out-of-pocket pregnancy-related medical expenses advances to the House floor. Bill author, Abita Springs Representative Larry Frieman (Freeman) says it’s crucial to have such a law with the state’s abortion ban in place.

The Republican’s bill requires proof of paternity. Frieman says the bill was crafted out of was drafted out of fundamental fairness because it’s not right that the mother has to bear the expenses and the father gets off scot-free before the child is even born.

Frieman says post-birth expenses fall under child-support laws. Examples of reimbursable expenses under this bill would be insurance co-pays and over-the-counter prenatal vitamins.

The bill had no opposition in House Civil Law and will be heard on the House floor.

Camp Beauregard will be officially renamed as the Louisiana National Guard Training Center in Pineville later this year. Lt. Col Noel Collins says through the guidance of the National Defense Authorization Act the training installation was given a new moniker.

Camp Beauregard was originally named after PGT Beauregard who served as a general in the Confederate army and because the installation is owned by the state it was not subject to redesignation like Fort Polk which will be named Fort Johnson later this year.

Collins says they accepted more than 200 original name submissions from the public last year and the redesignation committee then narrowed down the list of choices.

In addition to having a new name that reflects the values of service members and civilian employees, Collins says the name choice also indicates the installation’s location in Rapides Parish.

A ceremony for the designation of the installation will be held in the Fall.

Attorney General Jeff Landry launched the first 30-second television ad of his gubernatorial campaign today addressing one of the state’s top issues – crime. ULM Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says Landry’s message is spot on for voters.

Cross says Louisiana is home to three of the top ten most dangerous cities in America and leads the nation with 564 violent crimes per hundred thousand. And although one would think the governor could do little to fight crime, the governor is very powerful.

This will be a multi-market ad that will begin in Baton Rouge but expects to spread across the state. Cross says statewide advertisement during an election year is a hefty expense.

John Schroder, State Treasurer, was the first candidate to run a political campaign ad for governor this election year. The gubernatorial primary is October 14.
