Legislation that would chop off the minimum hours required to obtain a cosmetology license in Louisiana from 1,500 hours to 1,200 hours has been approved by the House Commerce Committee. Slidell Representative Mary Dubbison –the bill’s author- says less time would mean less financial obligation.

All students would still be required to pass a national exam to become licensed in Louisiana. A very vocal opponent to the bill – Pineville Salon Owner Vivian Green says less time means fewer qualified students.

Big upset in college baseball last night as Nicholls knocked off top ranked LSU six to five.

Nicholls took down top ranked LSU six to five in a wild baseball game last night in Baton Rouge. The Colonels trailed four to three heading into the eighth inning, but tied it in the eighth and scored two runs in the ninth and held on for the one run win. Xane Washington drove in two runs and Nico Saltaformaggio pitched three scoreless innings for the win. Bryce Collins gave up two runs in the ninth and suffered the loss.

The Ragin Cajuns snapped a three-game losing streak with a ten to five win over Southern. Carson Roccaforte had three hits and drove in two runs. U-L Lafayette hosts Northwestern State tonight.

ULM lost its third straight falling to Stephen F Austin 14 to 8. Southern Miss outscored Tulane 11 to ten, UNO edged South Alabama six to five and Grambling pummeled Alcorn State 16 to 7 to stay in first place in the SWAC West. Jose Vargas drove in three runs for the Tigers.

After getting swept by a red-hot Dallas Baptist team, Louisiana Tech baseball returns to action tonight as they face Southern Miss in Hattiesburg. The Bulldogs are 20-21 overall, nine and nine in Conference USA action. Tech Coach Lane Burroughs is hoping for a strong finish and a deep run in the league tournament…

Burroughs also says star outfielder Cole McConnell will not play this season. He was suspended indefinitely prior to the season after driving in a school record 76 runs last season.

LSU freshman pitcher Chase Shores will miss the rest of the season, because he tore a ligament in his throwing elbow. Shores reportedly underwent surgery last week and the Texas native will likely miss next season too.

A bill to legalize recreational marijuana is nipped in the bud. Brooke Thorington has more.

The Louisiana Senate has passed legislation that significantly increases the penalty for a person convicted of producing fentanyl, which is a deadly opioid. Current law calls for a five to 15 year sentence, Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt’s legislation increases the penalty for a first offense to 10 to 40 years.

The House Commerce Committee approves legislation that cuts down on the number of hours in order for a person to earn a cosmetology license. Under the legislation proposed by Slidell Representative Mary DuBuisson the number of training hours would go down from 15-hundred hours to 12-hundred…

But one salon owner told the committee that less time means fewer qualified students. The measure heads to the House floor for more discussion.

Festival International De Louisiane, the largest international music festival in the U-S gets underway in downtown Lafayette today. Marketing Director Carly Viator Courville says there are musical acts from France, Africa, Belgium and one of the headliners is a Grammy award winner from Louisiana…

Louisiana Tech Coach Lane Burroughs says star outfielder Cole McConnell will not play this season. He was suspended indefinitely prior to the season after driving in a school record 76 runs last season.

The battle for place kicker at LSU will continue in August. Damian Ramos was 10 for 14 on field goals last season. Sophomore Nathan Dibert competed with Ramos last fall and this spring and Coach Brian Kelly says the competition continues…

In college basketball news…former LSU guard Cam Hayes is transferring to East Carolina. Louisiana Tech announces six-foot-eleven Daniel Batcho is transferring to Ruston. He spent the last two seasons at Texas Tech and averaged eight points and six rebounds a game last season. McNeese is getting a transfer from TCU, Shahada (sha-ha-day) Wells. He averaged six points a game last season.

According to Yahoo Finance, the fast food chain Raising Cane’s, which is based in Baton Rouge, plans to pay its employees 19.50 an hour and workers can make more if they work past 10 PM or train employees. The chicken finger maker plans to open over 100 restaurants this year bringing their total to 800 locations.

This is the time of the year when gas prices are usually on the rise, but in the last week they have dropped five cents to $3.24 a gallon for regular gasoline. Triple-A fuel analyst Don Redman says motorists are catching a break…

According to Sports Illustrated the league is looking at taking away future home games or possibly forcing forfeitures. Legislation to make it legal to have cremated pet remains buried with their owner advances from House Commerce. Minden Representative Wayne McMahen filed the legislation last year but pulled the bill after pushback from the Cemetery Association.

McMahen’s measure leaves it up to each cemetery to decide if they would allow the cremated remains of a pet to be buried with a person.

The House Ways and Means Committee approves legislation to extend the state’s film tax credit program to 2035. The program which costs the state 180-million dollars every year is set to expire in 2025. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder’s legislation also calls for a graphic to be shown in the credits that lets viewers know where the movie was made.

The parent company of  The Advocate and The Times-Picayune will expand its reporting duties to Shreveport-Bossier City with a new digital news outlet – The Shreveport-Bossier Advocate. The Georges Media Group publishes print and digital news products in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette. Publisher of The Advocate and Times-Picayune Newspaper Group Judi Terzotis says their goal is to cover every area of the state.

From 2000 to 2020, newspaper circulation fell from 55.8 million households to below 25.6 million and since 2004 more than 1,800 local newspapers across the nation. Terzotis says expanding to Shreveport is about filling a gap in local news.

Terzotis says the digital news outlet will cover general topics like city government, education, health care, sports, culture, and entertainment, and spotlighting local restaurants.

A Danish-based energy investments group proposes building a $4-billion reduced-carbon ammonia plant in St. Charles Parish. The company, called St. Charles Clean Fuels, is exploring the ammonia production and export facility near St. Rose. Company project director Ramesh Raman (rah-MESH ROM-un) tells LRN they plan to create over 200 new direct jobs manufacturing so-called “blue ammonia”…:

Blue ammonia is reduced-carbon ammonia; a product that will be in increasing demand as more and more industries seek to lower carbon emissions. Raman says their process captures greenhouse gasses while producing their product…:

Louisiana Economic Development confirms the St. Charles Clean Fuels facility would mean 216 new direct jobs, at salaries over $90-thousand. But it will also mean over 900 new indirect jobs for St. Charles Parish and the surrounding area. Raman says tax incentives from the state was one reason to choose Louisiana, but they also were drawn to the existing ports and infrastructure St. Charles Parish offers…:

The bill makes it legal to have cremated animals’ remains declared as personal property and it’s still up to each individual cemetery to allow the practice or not. Boyd Mothe of Mothe Funeral Homes opposes the legislation on the grounds that cemeteries are dedicated properties for human remains only and are considered sacred.

Despite opposition from Mothe, McMahen reminded committee members that each cemetery could opt to either allow pet remains or not, the bill only makes it no longer illegal to do so.

In terms of the economy and demand and supply, the country’s inventory of crude is up by 51 million barrels compared to this time last year. Redman says the decline at the pump is due to a combination of weather, ease in demand, and crude oil costs.

Redman says crude oil is selling for about $79 a barrel, at this time last year it was selling for $102 a barrel, so gas prices are significantly cheaper…

Redman says prices are stabilizing but forecasts a continuous drop in prices to as low as $3.15 a gallon. Oil refineries are expected to wrap up the transition of winter-grade gasoline to summer-grade by May 1st.

LSU remains ranked number one in the baseball polls after sweeping Ole Miss over the weekend. The Tigers won in dramatic fashion yesterday as Hayden Travinski hit a three-run homer to give LSU a seven to six victory over the Rebs. Third baseman Tommy White left the game with soreness and is considered day-to-day.

Both quarterbacks threw a pair of touchdowns in Saturday’s Spring game on the LSU campus. Jayden Daniels was 10-of-11 for 168 yards and Garrett Nussmeier was 5-of-8 for 139 yards. Coach Brian Kelly says he was pleased with his Q-Bs…

Senior Kyren Lacy led the receivers with four catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Louisiana Tech concluded spring practice with a spring game on Saturday. It was offense versus defense and a modified scoring system was used and the offense outscored the defense 54-27. Head coach Sonny Cumbie is encouraged by the growth of his team…

La Tech went 3-and-9 last season.

Since January of 2022, 12 cases of Chronic Wasting Disease have been detected in Louisiana, all from Tensas Parish. State Wildlife Veterinarian Jim LaCour says they implemented a control plan that included feeding and baiting bans to prevent the spread of the disease, free testing for hunters, and banning the export of deer central nervous tissue from the area.

The plan was implemented in Tensas and portions of Franklin and Madison Parishes. They’ll continue testing when bow season starts in October.
