LSU has lost its last two mid-week contests, while the Lions are having a down year, 19-21 overall, 4-11 in the Southland. First pitch is at 6:30.

Also tonight, Northwestern State is at Louisiana Tech. The Demons beat the Bulldogs eight to seven in 13 innings on April 4th in Natchitoches. First pitch at J-C Love Field at Pat Patterson Park is at 6 PM.

The Saints have reportedly declined the fifth year option for offensive guard Cesar Ruiz. This means the 2020 first-round pick will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season, if the Saints do not re-sign him before free agency starts in 2024. Ruiz struggled at times his first two seasons, but was more consistent last season until a Lisfranc injury ended his season in Week 16.

Former South Carolina assistant Jimmy Lindsey is the new defensive line coach for LSU. Lindsey has over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience and Coach Brian Kelly says he has a proven track record of developing D-Linemen.

Ragin Cajuns cornerback Trey Amos has entered the transfer portal. The fifth year senior and 2024 draft prospect is reportedly drawing interest from LSU, Alabama, Florida, Michigan State and Miami and other Power Five programs. Amos had 26 tackles and eight passes defensed last season.

A bill to ban the hand-held use of a cell phone while driving passes its first hurdle in the legislature as the House Transportation Committee passed the legislation on a five to four vote. In support was Jennifer Smith, with “StopDistractions.org”, who says this proposed law will mean fewer car crashes…:

A bill to extend the state’s film tax credit passes in the House. The legislation renews the current tax credit for a decade when the current incentive expires in July of 2025. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the incentive has a $6 return on investment for every dollar spent, but Mandeville Representative Richard Nelson says an independent study shows the ROI is only 23 cents.

House Bill 562 was approved 74-24 and heads to the Senate, but Louisiana Film Entertainment Association doesn’t like an amendment added to the bill that makes the tax credit less lucrative over time.

It takes money to improve water systems and a new report from the Louisiana Department of Health finds 15-percent of the state’s water systems or 138 of them received a D or F grade…

Junior centerfielder Dylan Crews was named the SEC Player of the Week today. In four games last week, Crews 6-for-14 at the plate with two home runs 8 R-B-I and a six-hundred on base percentage. Crews leads the nation with a .490 batting average.

While LSU is having fun playing baseball, it was another tough weekend for ULM as they were swept by Georgia Southern. In Saturday’s game, the Warhawks gave up 35 runs.

LSU named Jimmy Lindsey as its new defensive line coach. Lindsey was the D-Line coach at South Carolina the last two seasons. Coach Brian Kelly says Lindsey has a proven track record of developing defensive linemen.

Mandina’s Restaurant in New Orleans re-opened today as New Orleans Police Officers continue to search for gunmen involved in the murder of one of their employees Friday night. Twenty-three-year-old Hilbert Walker III was killed outside the popular eatery located on Canal Street. NOPD Superintendent Michelle Woodfork says officers were dispatched to Mandina’s after gunfire erupted.

The incident occurred on the opening day of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the city’s biggest music festival. Two individuals pulled up to the restaurant in a vehicle and shot Walker while he was serving customers dining outside. Woodfork says NOPD wants to let the public know this was an isolated incident.

A female tourist from Chicago was inside the restaurant when she was hit by a stray bullet. An armed security guard on site returned fire during the incident.

The state’s three most populated cities are among MoneyGeek’s Top Ten List of the Most Dangerous Cities in the Country. 2021 FBI data was used for the rankings and LSU Health New Orleans Criminologist Dr. Peter Scharf says if violent crime isn’t addressed it will only create more problems for Louisiana.

New Orleans ranked 8th in the study, followed by Shreveport and Baton Rouge.

Scharf says the state’s poverty rate is a major contributing factor and unfortunately selling drugs is one of the easiest ways to supplement one’s income. Scharf says you have to look at the political response to crime from both the state and local governments.

It’s an election year, and Scharf says instead of candidates talking about crime we need to know exactly what they’ll do to address it. He cautions if the plan is to increase arrests to build the prison population because in the past Louisiana topped the list of the most arrests, incarcerations, and murders.

St. Louis topped the list of the most dangerous cities, followed by Mobile, Birmingham, and Baltimore. Memphis ranked 5th; Memphis, Detroit, and Cleveland rounded off the top 10.

Lawmen in St. Landry Parish seek the person who hit and killed a bicyclist, then drove away. State Police Troop I spokesman Thomas Gossen says it appears to have happened Friday evening along state Highway 93, near Sunset…:

The House Appropriations Committee is taking a different approach to funding proposed teacher pay raises. Chairman Jerome Zeringue says instead of providing more money in the state budget for teacher salaries, the panel proposes using state funds to pay down debt in the teacher retirement system, freeing up funds for local school systems to give teachers a raise

The House Appropriations Committee sent a proposed budget to the House floor that does NOT contain 197-million dollars in K-through-12 public school teacher pay raises. It also has less dollars for higher education and early childhood education that the governor proposed. College football players that wanted to enter the transfer portal this spring had  until Sunday to get in the portal and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier did not get in. So Nussmeier will be on LSU’s roster in 2023 and has three more years of eligibility left, while Jayden Daniels enters his final season as the likely starter.

The Saints selected a quarterback in the NFL draft as they traded up in the fourth round to take Fresno State QB Jake Haener, who was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs. Coach Dennis Allen likes what he sees from Haener…

The Ragin Cajuns lost 3-2 in 11 innings to Coastal Carolina as they dropped two of three to the sixth ranked team in the country. Louisiana Tech took two of three from Middle Tennessee and ULM was swept by Georgia Southern. On Saturday the Warhawks lost 35 to 8.

A 59-year-old man riding his bicylce in the 26-hundred block of Louisiana Highway 93 in St. Landry Parish was struck and killed by a vehicle and the search is on for the car that hit Randy Thibodaux of Sunset. State Police say based on the evidence at the scene it was a Metallic-Gray colored 2013to 15 Honda Accord two door. The right side of the vehicle should have damage.

Mandina’s Restaurant on Canal Street in New Orleans will re-open today after one of their servers was killed on Friday night as he waited on customers outside of the restaurant. A customer dining inside the restaurant was injured by a stray bullet. Cops say two people got out of a vehicle and killed 23-year-old Hilbert Walker the Third and then drove off.

We learned at a gubernatorial forum hosted by the Public Affairs Research Council that none of the seven major candidates for governor have plans to roll back the state’s expanded Medicaid Program that’s provided health insurance for 500-thousand Louisiana residents….
