High school seniors unable to graduate because they didn’t score high enough on the LEAP tests now have an appeals process as an avenue to earn their diploma. BESE President Dr. Holly Boffy says appeals will be administered at the local school level…:

She says about 4-percent of seniors score too low on the LEAP, and an appeals process could reduce dropouts.

State leaders are alerting Louisiana residents with a driver’s license or state ID of a data breach involving a third party transfer service that the Office of Motor Vehicles uses. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says there is no indication at this time the cyber attackers have sold, used, shared or released the OMV data obtained in the attack. But Louisianans should act quickly to protect their identities.

Governor Edwards and a delegation from Louisiana leave today for a week long economic development trip to France and Belgium. Edwards will attend the Paris Air Show, the largest aerospace and aviation trade show in the world. The Belgium leg of the mission will bring together an array of Louisiana and Belgian bioscience business and research leaders. LSU football has received a commitment from a four star cornerback out of Tennessee. His name is Ondre Evans and he’s rated as the 20th best cornerback in the country according to 24-7 sports. Evans also considered Georgia and Alabama.

The Saints concluded their mandatory three-day minicamp yesterday and the players will not be back until training camp starts in about five weeks. New starting quarterback Derek Carr has looked good in the offseason workouts. Coach Dennis Allen is glad Carr will be leading the Black and Gold’s offense…

Individuals should freeze their credit, change passwords, protect your tax refund and returns and check social security benefits.

The SEC has released who teams will play in football in 2024 as Texas and Oklahoma join the league. LSU will host the Sooners, along with Alabama, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. The versatile Taysom Hill is entering his seventh season in the NFL. He’s coming off a year in which he ran the ball a career-high 96 times and averaged six yards a carry. While Hill plays multiple positions, he’s listed as a tight end on the roster and hopes to catch more passes this season…

Fifty-one death row inmates have filed to have their sentences commuted to life in prison. It was just this year that two-term Governor Edwards made his views on the death penalty known. Brooke Thorington has more.

The Fortified Homes grant program recently received $30 million in funding and could begin taking applications by October for Louisiana homeowners to strengthen the quality of thier roof construction. House Insurance Chairman Mike Huval says offering these grants will motivate homeowners to upgrade.

The program will allow homeowners to receive as much as $10 thousand to retrofit their roofs to the Fortified standard which will make their homes stronger in the face of future hurricanes. The program mirrors Alabama’s efforts where more than 35,000 homes have been built or upgraded to the Fortified standard. The Breaux Bridge Representative says additional legislation requires insurers to change existing policies.

Certified builders install the roofs and the quality of work is verified by a third party. Homeowners will then receive a certificate to provide to their insurer to receive the discount. Huval says this was an important step to make homes safer.

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy is a co-sponsor of a Republican plan that seeks to lower college costs and student debt. It’s a package of five bills that Cassidy says addresses the root causes of the student debt crisis…

Cassidy says the legislative package includes a bill he’s introduced before, the College Transparency Act. The Baton Rouge lawmaker says it would help students decide whether to take on debt to attend programs that do not translate into high-paying jobs…

The bills are filed as U-S Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness program. Cassidy says the president’s plan does nothing to address the causes of the debt crisis…

Clemency has been filed for fifty-one of the state’s fifty-seven death row inmates, asking Governor John Bel Edwards to commute their death sentences to life in prison. Edwards has made several comments recently that he opposes the death penalty, and when asked if he plans to commute the sentences…

Edwards even addressed his feelings on the death penalty at his State of the State address in April…

According to the Louisiana Capital Appeals Project since 1999, nine innocent people have been exonerated from death row and the state’s death penalty is overwhelmingly imposed on people of color.

Edwards says he’ll consider the petitions after they’ve been reviewed by the Board of Pardons.

The state’s constitution authorizes the governor to commute a death sentence upon favorable recognition from the Board of Pardons.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved an appeals process for high school seniors who are unable to graduate because they do not meet the LEAP test scoring requirement. BESE President Doctor Holly Boffy (Bow-fee) says this new policy will prevent teens from dropping out of school…

Boffy says four-percent of high school seniors are unable to graduate,  because they didn’t pass the LEAP test. She says appeals will be administered at the local school level…

Louisiana is one of eight states that still require minimum standardized test scores, but only Louisiana did not offer students an appeals process. Boffy says BESE recognizes some kids do not perform well on tests and that should not serve as the sole barrier from graduation…

Louisiana ranks 49th out of 50 states for overall child well-being, according to the Annie E Casey Foundation. Some of the key findings…35-percent of children in Louisiana have parents who lack secure employment and the percentage of children living in poverty is 27-percent, while the national average is 17-percent. Some positives, fourth grade reading scores are up and the percentage of high school graduates graduating on time has improved.

Another sign of chaos in the final hours of the legislative session last week: a big cut in funding for a new terminal at the Port of New Orleans. Governor Edwards is not happy. Several lawmakers differed on raising the state’s spending cap, and the port sits in the district of one who voted “no.” Edwards says such “political payback” is not unusual…

The SEC announced its 2024 football schedule last night. We don’t’ have dates, but we know who LSU will play during the eight game conference schedule. The Tigers will host Oklahoma for the first time in program history. They will also host Alabama, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt and they’ll travel to Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina and Texas A-and-M. The Tigers will not play Mississippi State for the first time since 1943 and they will not play Auburn for the first time since 1992. LSU also announced they will host Nicholls on September seventh in 2024.

ULM will travel to Texas twice over the next few years. The Warhawks will face the Longhorns on September 21st, 2024. ULM will also return to Austin in 2029 for the season opener.

Terrebonne wide receiver Kylan Billiot announces his commitment to the LSU Tigers. He’s a 2024 recruit and is ranked as a three-star prospect by 24-7 sports. He’s six-foot-three, 195 pounds and is also an excellent basketball player.
