Louisiana House Speaker Clay Schexnayder announced today he will run for Secretary of State this fall. Schexnayder’s announcement comes one day after current Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said he will not run for re-election. PSC member Mike Francis and businessman Brandon Trosclair are also running.

Baton Rouge Senator and chair of the Select Committee on Women and Children Regina Barrow is concerned an accused rapist in Livingston Parish was released on bond this week. John Mack has been in custody since February 22nd after he was arrested on numerous charges including first-degree rape. Barrow says Mack allegedly harassed two of his victims before his arrest…

Defense attorney John McClendon argued for his release because he’s elderly and has been in jail since his arrest.

A Livingston parish man facing numerous child sexual abuse charges has been released on bond, and some are up in arms over it. One is Baton Rouge state Senator Regina Barrow, who chairs the Select Committee on Women and Children. She finds it troubling that John Mack, who’s been awaiting trial on the charges for over a year, was released this week on a $250-thousand bond…:

Barrow is concerned that Mack’s alleged victims were under the care of the Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) and seeks answers as to how the agency missed what was happening. Barrow has filed legislation to create an advocacy program for victims within DCFS…:

Barrow says Mack allegedly harassed two of his victims, and their families, before his eventual arrest. She says her committee sought to assure he would not be able to do so while out on bond…:

Mack’s family is very well-connected in Livingston Parish and southern Louisiana. Barrow worries that may affect how closely he is monitored while awaiting trial.

Colonel Lamar Davis expressed concern to lawmakers over the growing number of state troopers leaving the department. He says troopers are choosing to retire much sooner than they did in the past and there are just under 900 troopers in Louisiana.

Davis says troopers in Texas are paid almost twice as much and the pay in Tennessee and Mississippi surpasses Louisiana.

In the past staffing shortages prompted LSP to hold trooper academies, but Davis says there’s a need to hold continuous training for new officers to avoid vacancies.

Davis says they also need to work harder in recruitment and retention of officers.

Davis says they are doing more community outreach in an effort to build trust and also recruit potential cadets.

Former LSU basketball player Wayne Sims has died at the age of 54. Sims was a four-year standout for the Tigers from 1987 to 1991. He played with former LSU greats Shaquille O Neal and Chris Jackson. Former coach Dale Brown says the LSU basketball family is saddened by Sims’ unexpected death….

Sources say Sims collapsed at work yesterday and died from natural causes this morning.

The DeRidder native  played in 117 games from 1987 to 1991, averaging nearly 10 points a game. LSU went to the NCAA Tournament every year during Sims’ four seasons and in 1991 the Tigers won an SEC title. Brown says he’s crushed to hear about Sims’ passing..

Sims’ son, Wayde Sims, also wore the purple and gold. But just before his junior season, Wayde Sims was fatally shot during a fight following a party near the Southern University campus. Brown says he was inspired by Wayne Sims’ faith and will remember how he conducted himself on and off the court…

A recent survey by the Louisiana Federation of Teachers shows 97 percent of teachers and 98 percent of staff said they are not paid enough to raise a family. LFT Spokesperson Heather Cushman says state lawmakers are considering a pay raise for educators.

The statewide average teacher salary is $52, 472, nearly $3,000 less than the Southern regional average. Governor John Bel Edwards is proposing a $2,000 increase for teachers and possibly $3,000 if there is enough revenue available. Cushman says more than a third work of teachers have to work a second job.

Higher insurance premiums and inflation also deduct from living wages creating a greater shortage. Cushman says recent pay raises by the legislature do not resolve the problem but an additional increase in pay sends a message that educators are valued.

Louisiana teachers have not been at the Southern regional average since 2007 resulting in more than 1,200 vacant teaching positions across the state.

Macklin says Sims collapsed at work yesterday and died at the age of 54.

Sims played at LSU from 1987 to 1991 and averaged almost 10 points a game during his career. He was part of the 1991 SEC Championship team. The DeRidder native is the father of LSU basketball player Wayde Sims, who was killed in 2018 in a shooting near the Southern University campus.

In college baseball last night….LSU had 19 hits and Brayden Jobert and Jordan Thompson homered as the Tigers defeated Tulane 11 to 5. The Ragin Cajuns beat Louisiana Tech 10 to 5 and tonight U-L Lafayette is at Southeastern Louisiana. While Tech hosts ULM.

The Pelicans will try to survive and advance in the play-in tournament tonight as they host Oklahoma City at 8:30 PM. Zion Williamson will not play as he continues to be sidelined by a right hamstring injury. Williamson told the media yesterday he’s not mentally ready to play and it’s not easy sitting out…

If New Orleans can win tonight, they will play the Timberwolves on Friday in Minnesota. The winner of that game will face top-seeded Denver in the first round of the playoffs.

Last night the 12th ranked LSU softball team lost to top ranked Oklahoma three to nothing in front of a sold out crowd at Tiger Park. LSU returns to SEC play on Friday as they visit Auburn.

The five law enforcement officers charged in the 2019 roadside death of Ronald Greene have entered pleas of not guilty. Two state troopers, two former troopers, and a Union Parish deputy are charged with obstruction of justice, and malfeasance in office, and one is charged with negligent homicide. Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says the malfeasance charges are significant…:

Suzanne Salter, who lost her daughter to a distracted driver, is calling on lawmakers to pass a bill to prohibit Louisiana drivers from using a handheld cell phone while driving. Salter’s daughter, Nicole, was killed in 2014 in Pointe Coupee Parish by a driver who was texting and drifted into her lane.

The abortion debate is not over in Louisiana as there are two bills in the House to add exceptions to the state’s abortion ban for rape and incest. Lift Louisiana Executive Director Michelle Erenberg says there’s overwhelming support for such exceptions.

But the Louisiana Right to Life says its polling shows 63 percent of the state is pro-life.

The top-ranked LSU Tigers took care of Tulane last night eleven to five as Tommy White and Brayden Jobert (Joe-bear) combined to drive in six runs and Bryce Collins earned his first win in relief.

John Taylor and Heat Hood each drove in three runs as the Cajuns defeated Louisiana Tech ten to five. That’s six straight wins for U-L Lafayette.

Grambling outscored Mississippi Valley State 12 to 11. Southern swept a doubleheader from Prairie View.

The top ranked LSU baseball team plays at Tulane tonight for the first time since 2018. The Fighting Tigers are 26-and-5, while the Green Wave are 9-and-23. But Coach Jay Johnson says Tulane is a much better team than their record indicates.

LSU’s strength of schedule is ranked at the 9th best in the country. Johnson says many of the non-conference teams they’ve played are having great seasons

In his final State of the State address, Governor John Bel Edwards called for an end to the death penalty, exceptions to the state’s abortion ban and an increase in the state’s minimum wage.

Democrats in the Louisiana House have lost another member as Livonia Representative Jeremy LaCombe has switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party. Delhi Representative Francis Thompson also recently switched to the Republican Party.

There is some sobering news coming out of Tulane as researchers there have found record-breaking rates of seal-level rise along the U-S Southeast and Gulf coasts since 2010. Coastal Science Engineering Professor, Sonke Dangendorf, says these high rates of sea-live rise put more stress on vulnerable coastlines, particularly in Louisiana, where the land is also sinking…

Former Louisiana Attorney General Richard Ieyoub has passed away at the age of 78. He served as the state’s A-G from 1992 to 2004 and secured a settlement against big tobacco that netted the state four-point-six billion dollars. Ieyoub also ran for governor in 2003 and told Talk Louisiana’s Jim Engster that fellow Democrat Buddy Leach kept him out of the run-off by siphoning off five-percent of his voter support…

Edwards also pushed for those exceptions last year, but still signed a bill that would ban abortions in Louisiana once the Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade.

Abita Springs Representative Larry Frieman has filed a bill that would deny parole for offenders who are considered dangerous to society….

Under Frieman’s proposed legislation, a convicted offender would have a hearing to determine IF he or she IS a dangerous offender prior to the sentencing phase. If the judge determines them to be a danger to society, parole and/or probation can be denied.

Former Louisiana Attorney General Richard Ieyoub has passed away at the age of 78. He served as the state’s A-G from 1992 to 2004. Ieyoub took on major tobacco companies for deceptive practices in making and marketing cigarettes. In an interview last August on Talk Louisiana with Jim Engster, Ieyoub remembers getting a visit from lawyers representing Big Tobacco…

During his last State of the State address, Governor John Bel Edwards highlighted legislation, he’s supporting in the 2023 regular session. Among the bills is to raise the minimum wage, something he’s fought for every year during his two terms.

McNeese Pitcher Grant Rogers has been named Southland Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander from Texas is 8-and-0 after he threw his second complete game of the season in an eight to three win over A-and-M Corpus Christi. The Cowboys will host Louisiana Christian tonight.

Addison Fruge of Rosepine has been named the Class 2A Girls Basketball Player of the Year as she led the Eagles to a Division three nonselect state championship averaging 17 points a game.
