The USDA has changed the rules so crawfisherman impacted by low production this year because of last year’s summer heat can apply for federal disaster grants. Sean Richardson has more from a local producer

Louisiana lawmakers in the House reduced teacher stipends from $2,000 to $1,700 for the 2024-25 Fiscal Year. And while the budget has yet to be heard in Senate Finance, House Appropriations Chair Jack McFarland says the Revenue Estimating Conference figures could allow for those cuts to be restored.

The REC found an additional $88 million that can be added to the next budget year which begins July 1st.

McFarland says when the House received the budget, they were given X amount of dollars and had to make cuts accordingly. But he points out that they did that with the anticipation that the REC would find extra monies to restore those cuts and the originally proposed teacher stipends of $2,000.

The original amount set aside in the Executive Budget was $198 million for teacher pay stipends. Governor Jeff Landry proposed a second round of teacher stipends instead of a permanent salary increase because of anticipated future budget shortfalls. McFarland says now with additional funding from the R-E-C for the next fiscal year…

The current legislative session is scheduled to end June 3rd.

A bill to hold a Constitutional Convention, in August as opposed to May, still must pass in the Senate. While Senate President Cameron Henry says a new start date is more realistic, he says there are still several unknowns about the process that will be used in June and July before the convention.

Henry says proposed changes made at the convention will still have to go before voters in either the November or December elections.

Henry says there are still too many unknowns about the convention and the delegate process that he says will have to be answered before he believes the upper chamber will approve a convention.

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee has yet to schedule a hearing on the constitutional convention bill. Henry says the Senate also has to focus on approving a budget.

The USDA has announced Louisiana crawfish farmers are now covered under the Emergency Livestock Assistance Program, allowing producers to apply for federal disaster grants. Last year’s historic drought and a late-season freeze reduced production by about 200 million pounds at 45 thousand ponds. Louisiana Crawfish Processors Board Chairman David Savoy says it will take money to get production back to normal levels….

Savoy said the funding will make a major difference and help farmers with reseeding.

Savoy says supply has improved in April and May, but prices are still about a dollar more this year for boiled crawfish…

It’s Motorcycle Awareness Month and Greg Fischer with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission has some advice for Louisiana drivers.

And Fischer says this month isn’t just a message to drivers of trucks and cars, he’s talking to motorcyclists as well. He reminds everyone to drive the speed limit and responsibly this month and every month.

Even with advances in technology like lane and driver assist, it’s still best to take the time to slow down and look before you go.

Bad loss for the LSU Tigers last night as Alabama rallied from a four run deficit to beat LSU eight to seven. The Tigers two best relievers, Christian Little and Griffin Herring could not hold the lead. Little gave up three runs and Herring allowed two unearned runs on a throwing error by Alex Milazzo. LSU is now 9-16 in the SEC.

In Ruston, Louisiana Tech’s Ethan Bates added another magical moment to his great season as he belted a three-run walk-off homer to give the Bulldogs a nine to seven win over Western Kentucky. The victory moves Tech into a first place tie with Dallas Baptist.

The Ragin Cajuns thumped Georgia Southern 19 to 3 in eight innings. Kyle DeBarge hit his 18th home run of the season and drove in four runs. U-L Lafayette has a three-game lead over Troy and Southern Miss for first place in the Sun Belt.

Nicholls had an exciting five to four win over Lamar in eleven innings to as they move closer to catching Lamar for first place in the Southland.

In softball conference tournament action, Missouri eliminated LSU in the SEC Tournament semifinals two to one, in eight innings.

The Ragin Cajuns are in the Sun Belt Tournament championship game after beating Troy five to two. UL Lafayette will play Texas State at 1 PM.

Southeastern Louisiana is Southland Conference champions for the first time after beating U-I-W eight to seven. Lexi Johnson hit a walk-off three run homer and the Lions will be in the NCAA Tournament.

At the high school baseball tournament…Avoyelles Public Charter won its second title in a row, Quitman and Opelousas Catholic won their first championship, Oak Grove won its fourth straight, South Beauregard won its second title and University High won its first championship by rallying back from an eight to one deficit to beat St Charles Catholic eleven to eight.

Today’s championship games. Tuerlings Catholic versus St. Louis Catholic, North Vermilion versus Lutcher, Barbe against West Monroe and John Curtis against Catholic.

Former LSU pitcher Paul Skenes will make his major league debut today. Skenes will take the mound for the Pittsburgh against the Chicago Cubs at 3 PM.

Former LSU basketball star Glen “Big Baby” Davis has been sentenced to 40 months in prison for his role in a health care fraud scheme. Twenty-two people, 18 of them former NBA players, have been sentenced in the case, for filing false medical claims with the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan. Davis led the Tigers to Final Four in 2006.

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers this weekend which could decide the regular season Conference USA title. Regardless of this weekend’s outcome, LA Tech Head Coach Lane Burroughs says he’s proud of the season his team has put together, especially after they bounce back from getting swept by Arizona.

The LSU softball team knocked off the top seed in the SEC Tournament as the Tigers took down Tennessee two to one. It’s the first time since 2017, LSU has advanced to the semifinals of the conference tourney. Later today, they will play the winner of this morning’s game, Arkansas and Missouri.

At the high school baseball playoffs…Teurlings Catholic advanced to the Division Two select title game with a three to two, walk off win over Vandebilt Catholic. The Rebels will face St. Charles Catholic.

West Monroe and Barbe will meet again in the division one non-select state title game on Saturday night.

LSU baseball is not projected to make the NCAA tournament after the initial D-1 Baseball and Baseball America projections have come out. The Tigers need to win four of their next six games in order to have a good chance at making the NCAA tournament and LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson says that his team is excited to take on Alabama this weekend, no matter what the projections say.

First pitch between the Tigers and Tide will be on Friday at 6 pm and broadcast on the SEC Network +.

D1 Baseball and Baseball America’s projections also have UL-Lafayette and Louisiana Tech making the tournament with the Ragin Cajuns as a two seed in College Station regional and the Bulldogs as a three seed in the Starkville regional.

And in baseball news across the state, ULM will travel to South Alabama this weekend and LA Tech will have their hands full against Western Kentucky in a battle for first place in the Conference USA baseball standings.

The New Orleans Saints cut former Texas A&M, Minnesota Vikings, and Cleveland Browns quarterback Kellen Mond. The Saints quarterback room was crowded after the addition of South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler through the draft and the solution was for the Saints to cut Mond. The Saints quarterback room will now include starting quarterback Derek Carr, second year quarterback Jake Haener, NFL veteran Nathan Peterman, and Rattler.

UL-Lafayette softball looked dominant today when they defeated James Madison in five innings. The Ragin Cajuns demonstrated why they were the number one overall seed in the SunBelt tournament, recording 8 runs on seven hits and Cajuns pitcher Sam Landry went four and a third innings, striking out 4 batters, and only allowing 3 hits.

And in the Non-select Division I baseball playoffs, third seeded Sam Houston will take on second seeded West Monroe at 5:30 and thirteenth ranked Benton will take on first seed Barbe at 5:30.

And UL-Lafayette will look to bounce back from a tough series loss against Troy when the Ragin Cajuns take on Georgia Southern this weekend with first pitch on Friday at 5:30 pm.

The now bankrupt Steward Health Care group is selling the Glenwood Regional Medical Center. The hospital in West Monroe has been plagued by staffing and supply issues. But complicating the issue is that Medical Properties Trust owns the property. State representative Mike Echols says one of the leaders at Steward is also under investigation….

Zachary Evans Cryer from Benton High School in Bossier Parish has been named the Louisiana High School student of the year by the Department of Education. Cryer is a leader for 4-H, BETA, student council and the Fellowship of Christian athletes. He also competes on the track and basketball teams, while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

The ranking is based on several categories that Louisiana did not perform well in, like crime, the economy and its roads. Are there any positives? LSU Football head coach Brian Kelly says there are players just looking to get paid. Kelly made the comments to WAFB-TV in response to the Tigers missing out on two proven defensive tackles who committed elsewhere. Kelly says LSU does have generous NIL opportunities, and LSU can also get you ready for the NFL. Damonic Williams and Simeon Barrow visited LSU, but are heading to Oklahoma and Miami instead.

Republican Mike Johnson of Bossier Parish will keep his job as House Speaker as a vote to remove him failed miserably.

Governor Jeff Landry will visit the U-S Southern border today to get a first hand look at Operation Lone Star. Since April Louisiana National Guard soldiers have been assisting with border security efforts.

Steward Health Care has announced its selling Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe. Steward has filed for bankruptcy and is looking to sell several of its 31 hospitals in eight states. The Glenwood hospital has been struggling with staffing and supply issues and State Representative Mike Echols says it’s time for Glenwood to have a new owner…

According to the Violence Policy Center, Louisiana ranks second in the nation for gun deaths. Kristen Rand with VPC says states with weak firearm laws and higher gun ownership consistently have higher gun death rates.

Mississippi ranks first for the highest gun death rate followed by Louisiana, New Mexico, Alabama, and Missouri.

Former LSU baseball star Paul Skenes has received the call to the big leagues. Skenes will pitch Saturday afternoon for the Pittsburgh Pirates in game two of a series against the Chicago Cubs. Last year’s number one overall pick has been dominant in Triple-A. In seven starts in Indianapolis, Skenes posted a 0.99 ERA and struck out 45 in 27.1 innings.

D-1 Baseball and Baseball America have released their Regional projections and they do not have LSU as one of the 64 teams in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers are at Alabama this weekend and they need to win at least four of their final six conference games to have a chance at receiving a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

D-! baseball has U-L Lafayette as a two-seed in the College Station Regional and Louisiana Tech as a three-seed Starkville Regional. Bulldogs coach Lane Burroughs says it’s questionable whether closer Ethan Bates will pitch this weekend. Burroughs says Bates didn’t feel great an outing against New Mexico State last Saturday.

The Saints have cut quarterback Kellen Mond. New Orleans quarterback room was crowded after drafting Spencer Rattler, so Mond ends up being the odd man out. Derek Carr is the starter and the other back-ups are second-year pro Jake Haener and journeyman Nathan Peterman.

The LSU softball team needed 14 innings to beat Alabama three to two and advance into the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. Taylor Pleasants had the walk-off hit and Sydney Berzon was the winning pitcher after giving up two runs in the first inning. The Tigers take on Tennessee today.

Katelin Cooper drove in a pair of runs and Louisiana Tech softball defeated UTEP two to nothing in the Conference USA Tournament. Tech faces Western Kentucky this afternoon.

In the Southland Tourney…McNeese and Nicholls face each other in an elimination game today. A win for Southeastern today over UIW and they advance to the championship round.

Sterlington, South Beauregard and North Vermilion were among the winners yesterday at the state high school baseball tournament. They all advance to the championship round. Iowa’s season is over after losing to Lutcher five to nothing.
