Some people in northeast Louisiana have been waiting a long time to get their power restored. Now, Entergy says they may have to wait a little longer. It says it may be as late as Saturday before it can restore power to everyone. Nyka (NIGH-kah) Scott, the vice president of customer service for Entergy, says that’s because the task was a lot more daunting than originally anticipated.

Entergy has opened information centers to help customers who are dealing with a prolonged outage. These are places where customers can charge devices and access assistance.

A teenage boy is arrested in connection with the killing of an elderly woman inside her Morehouse Parish apartment. On Tuesday evening, 73-year-old Ruby Lee Peterson was found stabbed to death inside her apartment in Bastrop. Chief Deputy James Mardis with the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office says the following day, deputies arrested 17-year-old Amir Dowles.

According to police records, the Teacher of the Year at Broussard Middle School has been arrested on child sex abuse charges. Thirty-seven-year-old Christi Oster has been charged with indecent behavior with a juvenile and carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Lafayette Police say Oster had an inappropriate relationship with a former student.

The LSU men’s basketball team dropped to 1-7 in the SEC last night as they fell behind by 27 points in the first half to Mississippi State and ended up losing to the Bulldogs 80 to 66. It’s the second time this year, LSU was non-competitive in the first half against one of the weaker teams in the SEC.

Louisiana Tech is playing better as the Bulldogs defeated UTEP 69 to 59 last night for their second straight win in Conference USA play. Tech is at Sam Houston Saturday.

The sixth ranked LSU women’s basketball team goes after its sixth straight win tonight as they host Arkansas at 7 PM. Sophomore guard Jada Richard is one of the team’s leading scorers in SEC play. Coach Kim Mulkey…

Saints veteran linebacker Demario Davis will be a free agent this offseason, and it sounds like he is open to testing the market. Davis appeared on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams’ show on FanDuel TV and this is what he had to say on potentially returning to New Orleans for his 15th season in the NFL.

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis says they want Davis back next season. Meanwhile, the Saints scouting department is in Mobile scouting the Senior Bowl. Assistant General Manager Jeff Ireland hopes the Black and Gold are this year’s version of the New England Patriots next year…

Events are underway all this week with a dinner dance on Friday and a Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday. Could we be headed for another government shutdown? That could happen – more specifically a partial shutdown – if the Senate fails to give its approval to a House-passed funding package by midnight tomorrow night. LSU Political Science Professor Robert Hogan says the six pending bills were cruising towards passage – but then, something happened last weekend.

Louisiana had a net population gain last year. The U.S. Census Bureau says between July 1st, 2024, and June 30th, 2025, Louisiana added about 33-hundred people to its population. But demographer Greg Rigamer says that growth pales to the population gains seen in neighboring states like Texas, Tennessee, Florida and North Carolina.

Louisiana had the seventh worst-population growth in the nation in 2025 according to the latest Census data.

A new state tax credit available to businesses is designed to encourage employers to hire interns and have apprenticeships. Leaders for a Better Louisiana CEO Barry Erwin says employers must employ the individual for at least 100 hours in the tax year to qualify….

D-C Mardi Gras festivities pick up today in the nation’s capital. It’s one of the largest political networking events of the year. Lapolitics publisher Jeremy Alford says with this year being an election year, the candidates running for U.S. Senate and the now-open fifth congressional district seat will use this event to secure campaign donations.

The first ever U-S Rockin 1000 concert will take place at the Caesars Superdome on Saturday. It features one-thousand musicians playing iconic rock anthems and there will be musicians from Louisiana involved, including 70-year-old drummer Andy Chetta of Covington…

The musicians begin rehearsals today and the concert is Saturday night.

Veteran Saints linebacker Demario Davis’ contract expires in March and in an interview with FanDuel’s Kay Adams, the 37-year-old seemed intrigued with the possibility of playing for another team next season….

Davis had a career-high in tackles this past season. General Manager Mickey Loomis told reporters at the Senior Bowl in Mobile that they want Davis back.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin and running backs coach Kevin Smith were in the 3-3-7 yesterday visiting high schools. Their first stop was Cecilia High School, likely checking in with four-star athlete Braylon Calais. Kiffin and Smith also stopped at Acadiana High School, Westgate and Albert Simien at Sam Houston.

The sixth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team is currently riding a five-game winning streak, and the Lady Tigers look to make it six straight tonight against Arkansas at 7 p.m. Head Coach Kim Mulkey says this is one of the closest teams she’s ever had in her time in Baton Rouge.

Brutal defeat for the LSU men’s basketball team last night as the Tigers fell behind by 27 points in the first half and never challenged the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a humiliating 80-66 loss.

Louisiana Tech won its first game on the road as the Bulldogs defeated UTEP 69-59. Tech has won four of its last five.

The state health department has confirmed another winter storm-related death, but the number of deaths connected to the ice storm is still eight. That’s because the death of a 62-year-old man in Sabine Parish is no longer considered storm related. So, the eighth death tied to the storm is a 65-year-old man in Jackson Parish who died from hypothermia after his home lost power.

Red Cross disaster action teams have responded to scores of home fires in the last week. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Traffic is flowing smoothy once again on I-20 between Shreveport and Monroe.  Erin Buchanan with DOTD says crews were able to clear I-20 of all of those stalled 18-wheelers that had traffic halted for multiple days.

Ruston Mayor Ronnie Walker says with help from local police, he went to I-20 on Monday to provide the hundreds of stranded motorists with food and water…

Another contributing factor….according to Governor Jeff Landry the brine sprayed on I-20 to prevent ice from forming, actually froze, so it was NOT able to act as an anti-icing agent.

The American Red Cross says over the last seven days they’ve responded to no fewer than 44 single-family home fires and two multi-family home fires throughout the state. Shelby Wells with the Red Cross of Louisiana says they are not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of Americans to perform its mission. Wells says the money that the Red Cross gives to those who are displaced by a fire is never a loan…

The cold weather is not good for crawfish as mudbugs find warmth by burrowing into the mud. LSU Ag Center crawfish agent Todd Fontenot says that keeps them growing…

Another blast of arctic air is expected this weekend, but Fontenot says we are still on pace for a normal peak crawfish season that runs from late February through April.

 

Vehicles are finally moving at a normal speed on I-20 as the interstate that crosses north Louisiana is finally free of the dangerous ice that had traffic at a standstill for multiple days. DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says drivers on I-20 still need to be careful…

You may have heard about a private jet crash in Maine that killed six people last Sunday. One of the victims is Sabine Parish native and Tulane graduate Tara Arnold. Arnold was a personal injury attorney in Houston. The plane was on its way to France and it stopped in Maine. The aircraft crashed shortly after take off in snowy conditions in Maine.

LSU’s passing game coordinator during its magical 2019 national championship season is now a head coach in the NFL. Joe Brady, who has been the offensive coordinator in Buffalo, has been promoted to head coach. The 36-year-old Brady replaces Sean McDermott who was fired after nine season as the head coach in Buffalo.

In college basketball last night, Stephen F Austin defeated Northwestern State 69-67, UNO upended Nicholls 80 to 62, McNeese started a three-game road trip by beating Southeastern Louisiana 76 to 66.

Tonight, LSU begins a soft part of its schedule by hosting Mississippi State, Tulane hosts South Florida and Louisiana Tech is at UTEP.

The Pelicans two-game winning streak ended last night with a 104-95 loss to Oklahoma City.

 

Former Jennings High School head football coach Rusty Phelps passed away on Friday after suffering a stroke. Phelps coached for a total of 35 years, with 28 at Jennings and he won over 200 games. Former Eunice football coach Paul Trosclair says Phelps was one of the good guys.

Visitation for Coach Phelps is tonight and his funeral is tomorrow in Jennings.

Former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is at the Senior Bowl looking to rebuild his draft stock. Nussmeier didn’t get to finish his college career off on a high note at LSU, but says he’s looking forward to the Lane Kiffin era in Baton Rouge.

Nussmeier says he’s now healthy after a core injury limited him last season.

Senator Bill Cassidy is calling for a full joint federal and state investigation into the events in Minneapolis that he described as “disturbing.” In a conference call with reporters, Cassidy said things in Minneapolis have gotten out of hand.

On social media, Cassidy said the credibility of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security are at stake. He says it seems that they may have lost sight of the purpose of the enhanced immigration enforcement operation, and that could have a profound effect on President Trump’s legacy.

Back home in Louisiana, I-20 is now flowing smoothly again after the ice storm left some motorists stranded on the interstate for up to 20 hours. Captain Kenneth Balkom says LDWF agents also conducted welfare checks on the drivers who were stranded. He says winter weather and Louisiana do not mix well.

Update on the power situation…according to power-outage-dot-us….75-thousand customers in north Louisiana remain without power. Entergy is reporting 66-thousand outages.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is at the Senior Bowl this week to showcase his talents to NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers. Nussmeier battled an abdominal injury last season and says he’s worked hard to get back to 100-percent to participate in Mobile.

Going into the 2025 season, Nussmeier was a potential first-round pick, but after an injury-plagued season, he is now projected as a third to sixth-round pick.

Joe Brady, LSU’s passing game coordinator during the Tigers’ 2019 national championship, has landed a head coaching job at the age of 36. The Buffalo Bills promoted Brady after two seasons as their offensive coordinator.  Buffalo’s offense has been one of the best in the NFL since Brady took over as O-C.

A highly respected high school football coach has passed away. Former Jennings coach Rusty Phelps died late last week from a stroke at the age of 62. Phelps won over 200 games at Jennings and led the Bulldogs to a state championship game appearance in 2019. Former Eunice Coach Paul Trosclair, who coached against Phelps for many years, says Phelps meant a lot to the Jennings community.
