The Saints cut their roster down to 53. One of the biggest cuts was last year’s punter Lou Hedley, who lost out to undrafted free agent Matthew Hayball, who is from Austrailia and punted at Vanderbilt. Head Coach Dennis Allen:

Hayball averaged 50 yards a punt on seven punts during the preseason.

Allen has also decided to go with Blake Grupe as his field goal kicker over Irish kicker Charlie Smith.

Running back Kendre Miller will start the season on injured reserve. Miller injured his hamstring on the first day of training camp and has not been able to return to the practice field.

Rookie receiver Mason Tipton made the team despite missing a lot of the preseason with an injury. Tipton looked good at the start of camp.

Former LSU baseball star Dylan Crews picked up his first major league hit last night. A double off Yankees starter Gerit Cole. Crews ended up with two hits and a run scored as the Nationals doubled up the Yankees four to two.

Aaron Nola threw seven shutout innings for his 12th win as the Phillies blanked the Astros five to nothing.

Baton Rouge restaurants can participate in The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana oyster recycling program that aims to combat coastal erosion by using recycled oyster shells. Sean Richardson has more.

Critical Race Theory is banned in K-through-12 public schools in Louisiana as a result of an executive order signed by Governor Landry. Andrew Greenstein has reaction from a pair of state senators.

After operating in New Orleans for ten years, The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana has expanded its oyster shell recycling program to Baton Rouge. This initiative uses recycled oyster shells to rebuild and strengthen Louisiana’s fragile coastlines. Spokesperson James Karst says oyster shells are a critical component in creating new oyster reefs, which act as natural barriers against storm surges and help restore marine habitats.

CRCL’s program has recycled more than 14-million-pounds of used oyster shells from restaurants, cleans them, and returns them to the water to form new reefs. Karst says the expansion to Baton Rouge allows more restaurants and residents to participate in the program, further increasing the supply of shells for coastal restoration projects.

The expansion to Baton Rouge marks a significant step in scaling up the program to preserve its coastline for future generations. Karst says this initiative is crucial for Louisiana, where the coastline is rapidly disappearing due to erosion, and the impact of hurricanes.

Louisiana is pulling out all the stops in boosting tourism and entering the global spotlight. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says 2024 has been the year of music.

Lieutenant Governor Nungesser says Louisiana tourism is almost all the way back to pre-pandemic levels.

Latest data from the Louisiana Secretary of State reveals more women registered to vote than men by 64-percent in July. 5,287 newly registered women voters compared to 3,305 newly registered men voters. UL Monroe Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says this could be due to Kamala Harris getting the Democratic Nomination.

Critical Race Theory is a no-go in public schools in Louisiana. Governor Landry signed an executive order banning the subject matter in K-through-12 public schools in the state. It’s something that Denham Springs Republican Senator Valarie Hodges has been pushing for.

But New Orleans Democratic Senator Royce Duplessis doubts that critical race theory is being taught in K-through-12.

Duplessis says kids need to be taught history, even if the history is uncomfortable.

Hodges says that’s not what Landry’s executive order does.

Duplessis says Landry’s order manufactures division where division doesn’t exist, all while he pushes for the Ten Commandments to be placed in classrooms.

Louisiana Tech will face Nicholls to open up the season on Saturday. Bulldogs Coach Sonny Cumbie named Jack Turner is starting quarterback before training camp started. Turner started four games last year for Tech and Cumbie says he’s the right man to lead this team

Today was cut down day in the NFL as teams had to get their rosters down to 53. Last year’s punter Lou Hedley was released, so unless the Black and Gold sign someone else, undrafted free agent Matt Hayball will be the punter.
Charlie Smith was also released. But the kicker from Ireland could land on the practice squad. Safety Johnathan Abram was also let go, but could also end up on the practice squad. Former Ragin Cajuns running back Jacob Kibodi was released, despite scoring two touchdowns in the preseason finale.
Running back Kendre Miller will start the season on injured reserve. Miller injured his hamstring on the first day of training camp and has not been able to return to the practice field. The third round pick in 2023 also suffered through an injury plagued rookie season.
Rookie receiver Mason Tipton made the team despite missing a lot of the preseason with an injury. Tipton looked good at the start of camp.
LSU is getting ready to face a pass-heavy USC team so it will be a big test for a Tigers defense that ranked 105th in the country in total defense last year. Coach Brian Kelly has confidence his front seven can get the job done…

USC is starting Miller Moss at quarterback. He threw for a bowl record six touchdown passes and 372 yards versus Louisville in last year’s Holiday Bowl.
Around the NFL, the Carolina Panthers released former LSU receiver Terrace Marshall of Bossier City. Marshall was on the 2019 national championship team, but last year for the Panthers only caught 19 passes after averaging nearly 18 yards a reception in 2022.

The 13th ranked LSU football team is getting ready for another big-time season opening matchup as they ‘ll face 23-ranked USC on Sunday night in Las Vegas. The Tigers have a history of playing tough opponents to kick off the season. It’s been reported USC tried to back out of this game. Coach Brian Kelly says playing challenging openers might not be the way to go in the future, especially if the SEC expands to a nine-game league schedule…

LSU is scheduled to open the 2025 and 2026 seasons against Clemson.

Ben Woolridge has beat out Chandler Fields to be the Ragin Cajuns starting quarterback for Saturday night’s game against Grambling State. Coach Michael Desormeaux explained the decision when he met with reporters on Monday….

Woolridge also won the starting quarterback job out of camp last year, but suffered a season ending foot injury in week three.

It’s the first inpatient mental health unit for pregnant and postpartum women in the state, and it will start accepting patients from across Louisiana one week from today. Today, Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge takes the wraps off its new Perinatal Mental Health Unit.

Chief Nursing Officer Cheri Johnson says 20-percent of women experience pre-natal mood and anxiety disorder along with depression and 75-percent of those case go untreated.

L-E-D Secretary Susan Bourgeois says many college grads leave Louisiana for opportunities in other states and never return because they don’t realize there are opportunities here…

State Senator Blake Miguez is seeking a legal opinion on U-L Lafayette’s decision to institute a one-thousand-foot gun free zone around the Science Museum in downtown Lafayette, because it’s considered part of the school. Miguez has concerns about disarming law-abiding citizens in areas that is not technically on university property…

UL Lafayette officials maintain gun-free zones are necessary to ensure safety, particularly in areas where students and faculty frequently gather.

 

The National Hurricane Center is now keeping an eye on an area of low pressure in the Atlantic that currently has a low chance of developing into a named storm as it moves towards the Caribbean Sea. LSU Public Health Climatologist Barry Keim says this could be the start of a busy September…

Louisiana will hold its first Black Bear hunt since 1987 in December in select parishes in northeast Louisiana and the permit lottery application opens Thursday.

Homicides in New Orleans have fallen by nearly half from 2022, but according to the Times-Picayune, the number of murders in the French Quarter is at a 17-year-high. Seven people have been killed in the French Quarter this year and authorities do not have a firm answer on why there’s been an uptick in murders in the popular tourist destination.
State Senator Blake Miguez is seeking a legal opinion from the state attorney general over the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus police enforcing a one-thousand foot gun free zone perimeter around the university’s museum in downtown Lafayette. Miguez says the museum should not be considered school property…

But the university argues the museum is place where students and faculty members go to often.

Governor Jeff Landry signed an executive order that seeks to enhance election integrity by preventing non-citizens from voting. Any state agency that provides assistance to an individual is also required to offer that person the opportunity to register to vote. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says this executive order says the agency must also inform the person they can’t vote if they are not a legal citizen

Governor Landry says 48 noncitizens have been removed for Louisiana voter rolls over the past two years. The League of of Women Voters of Louisiana says that’s a small number and they believe the executive order is unnecessary.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announces the black bear hunting lottery will open to state hunters on Thursday and run through September 25th. Just ten permits will be issued at the cost of 50 dollars. LDWF Secretary Madison Sheahan says the money will go towards black bear conservation efforts….

Black bears were removed from the endangered species list in 2016. A hunting season for black bears is scheduled for northeast Louisiana in December.
