And then with the 73rd overall pick, the Saints took tight end Oscar Delp. In his four seasons with the Bulldogs, she caught 70 passes for 854 yards and nine touchdowns.

Two LSU Tigers were taken on Friday…safety AJ Haulcy is headed to Indianapolis, while receiver Zavion Thomas was selected by the Chicago Bears. Garrett Nussmeier is still waiting to be selected.

Tough loss for the LSU Tigers last night in Starkville. LSU led by four runs at one point, but lost to Mississippi State ten to eight in 11 innings. Pitcher Casan Evans was the scheduled starter, but he didn’t pitch due to arm discomfort. LSU was one pitch away from winning 8-7, but State tied it in in the ninth and won it on a two-run homer in the eleventh inning.

In other baseball action…Louisiana Tech leads Missouri State eight to two in the seventh inning. Declan Dahl struck out seven and Trey Hawsey had three runs driven in. The game resumes at 1 PM today.

The Cajuns rallied from a two-run deficit to beat Arkansas State three to two. Donovan LaSalle tied the game with a two-run homer and Steven Spalitta drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning.

Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana both won, while McNeese lost to UT Rio Grande Valley eight to seven in 11 innings. Grambling thumped Alcorn 11 to 4.

Two of the state’s largest teacher unions are supporting Constitutional Amendment 3 on the May 16th ballot. Louisiana Federation of Teachers president Larry Carter says the measure would provide a permanent salary increase for educators and school employees….

Educators and school employees are already currently receiving most of this money. But Carter says it’s a stipend and could go away if the state needs to reduce revenue due to tough budget times.

Cut 7 (10) “..permanently.”

Constitutional Amendment 3 would mean teachers would receive a permanent salary increase of $2,250 and school employees would get $1,125 dollars. The permanent pay raise would come from the dissolving of three education trust funds and the money from those funds would pay down teacher retirement debt, creating a savings to pay teachers.

Carter says this is part of LFT’s efforts to get educators’ salaries to the Southern Regional Average, which is critical in ensuring a quality teacher in every classroom…

The Louisiana Association of Educators is also in favor of Constitutional Amendment 3.

The Louisiana Department of Health this week confirmed a case of measles in the New Orleans area. All we know about the patient is that the patient is a child who became exposed during international travel. LDH says on April 17th while infected, the patient visited the Kenner Target and Walmart stores. State Epidemiologist Theresa Sokol says if you were at either store that day, closely monitor yourself for any symptoms.

LDH says the patient was partially vaccinated. The recommendation is two doses of the MMR vaccine for children and one dose for adults. Sokol says those who get those recommended doses are 97-percent protected from measles for life.

Sokol says especially if you were in the Target or Walmart in Kenner last Friday, you should double-check your MMR vaccine history.

Cut 11 (11) “…for a vaccine.”

This is the first measles case reported in Louisiana this year. Last year, there were three cases.

Baton Rouge Police officers have arrested a 17-year-old and searching for a second suspect in Thursday’s fatal shooting at the Louisiana Mall that claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl and wounded five others. Baton Rouge Police Chief T-J Morse says the individual in police custody is 17-year-old Markell Lee…

Morse says four other people who were detained shortly after the shooting have been released. He says they are confident Lee was one of the shooters…

Morse says Lee has an extensive criminal history in the juvenile court system. Police have released an image of the second person they are looking for in the hopes the public can help identify that person.

The 17-year-old girl who was fatally shot has been identified as Martha Odom. She attended Ascension Episcopal High School in Youngsville. Odom loved ballet, writing and Doctor Pepper. East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore grieves for her family…

The Saints used their first pick in the 2026 NFL draft to give quarterback Tyler Shough another weapon in the passing game by selecting Arizona State receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson spoke to the New Orleans media on what he can add to the Black and Gold offense…

In nine games with the Sun Devils last season, Tyson caught 61 passes for 711 yards and eight touchdowns, but he has battled injuries during his college career.

The draft continues at six this evening with the second round, in which the Saints have the tenth pick. They also have a pick in the third round.

Former LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane went to the Kansas City Chiefs, who traded up to the sixth overall selection to draft Delane. Former LSU safety AJ Haulcy is expected to go in the second round and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will likely get drafted tonight and linebacker Harold Perkins could go in the third round.

 

The LSU Tigers are looking to snap a six-game losing streak as they are playing Mississippi State in Starkville as we speak. The Bulldogs have lost six straight SEC home games.

With just four series remaining, Louisiana Tech sits fifth in the Conference USA standings at 11-and-7 in league play. Coach Lane Burroughs says the Bulldogs will need to start playing their best baseball to put themselves in a strong position heading into the postseason, especially with a tough stretch still ahead.

A measure to crack down on marijuana use near school facilities advances to the Senate. The full House passed Pollack Representative Gabe Firment’s bill on a vote of 59-to-34. It would increase the penalty for smoking marijuana within two-thousand feet of a school facility to up to a year in prison and a fine of up to one-thousand dollars. Firment said marijuana use near schools is getting out of control.

Baton Rouge police chief T.J. Morse says at 1:22 yesterday afternoon, two groups of people got into an argument, and gunfire erupted.

The NFL draft got underway last night with the Saints selecting Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson with the eighth overall pick. Tyson has great hands and can play all three wide receiver positions. But the 21-year-old has also battled injuries during his career. The Saints have two draft selections tonight and five more on Saturday.

The Saints selected wide receiver Jordan Tyson out of Arizona State with the eighth overall pick last night, which adds another weapon to quarterback Tyler Shough’s arsenal. Tyson caught 61 passes for 711 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games with the Sun Devils last season. Coach Kellen Moore says Tyson has several skills that stood out.

The Kansas City Chiefs moved up three spots to number six to take former LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane. He becomes the second-highest LSU DB selected in the draft and the ninth defensive back in program history to be selected in the first round. According to Spotrac, Delane’s rookie contract is worth $41.9 million with $26.9 million guaranteed.

One name that has appeared in several mock drafts is LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane. General Manager Mickey Loomis, who attended Delane’s impressive pro day at LSU, says he is uber-talented.

The LSU Board of Supervisors has approved a new contract for athletic director Verge Ausberry. Ausberry will receive one-point-five million dollars by the end of 2027 and his eight-million dollar deal runs through 2030. At LSU’s 14th spring practice on Thursday, redshirt junior wide receiver Jackson Harris exited with an apparent injury after landing awkwardly on an incompletion. He was evaluated by trainers and walked off under his own power, but did not return.

UL Lafayette football will wrap up spring practice with a game Saturday. One position group coach Michael Desormeaux wants to see more production from is the wide receivers. With Shelton Sampson out with an injury, Desormeaux is looking for players to step up Saturday.

Former LSU and Ole Miss forward Corey Chest is headed to Lake Charles to play for McNeese State. The 6-foot-8, 220 pound sophomore averaged 2.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Rebels this past season.

The LSU Board of Supervisors approves a contract extension for Athletic Director Verge Ausberry. His new deal will pay him eight-million dollars through 2030. Ausberry says it’s an honor to lead the LSU athletics department.

Ausberry has been busy since he was promoted to athletics director. The former linebacker has hired a new football and men’s basketball coach.

Harahan Representative John Illg is pushing legislation again this year that would make it a crime to do an intentional balloon release. Illg says it’s bad for the environment and it produces litter. Illg says passing a law at the state level is all well and good, but a state law doesn’t go far enough.

Illg’s bill has passed the House and it’s awaiting final passage on the Senate floor.

Morse could not provide any details on the conditions of the individuals wounded during the mass shooting. A law enforcement source has told LRN that two people are in critical condition.

This is the second mass shooting in Louisiana in the last week. Eight children were killed in Shreveport on Sunday when the father of seven of the children killed his kids and a nephew execution style.

And in Florida…authorities apprehended a North Carolina man who was traveling to Louisiana to carry out a mass shooting at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival got underway. Okaloosa County Sheriff deputies recovered a handgun and about 200 rounds of ammunition from his hotel room in Destin, Florida.

State Climatologist Jay Grymes says most of north Louisiana and much of southeast Louisiana is in extreme drought.  There is the potential for severe weather in north Louisiana tomorrow night.

The LSU Board of Supervisors approved a contract for athletic director Verge Ausberry, who was promoted to the job in November after Scott Woodward was fired. Ausberry is from New Iberia. He played linebacker for LSU from 1986 to 1990, winning two SEC championships. He was also a two-year captain on defense. He says his best job at LSU was his first job, as he served as an academic advisor for student-athletes.
