Backup tight end Mac Markway has decided to enter the transfer portal, but it looks like the Tigers have some good depth behind starting tight end Mason Taylor. Ka’Morreum Pimpton and Trey’Dez Green have been impressive in the first few days of camp.

After a day off yesterday, the Saints return to the practice field today as they prepare for Saturday’s preseason opener against Arizona. New Orleans has released a depth chart for the game. It shows Chase Young and Carl Granderson as co-starters at right defensive end. Wide receiver Mason Tipton remains on the bottom of the depth chart, despite having an impressive camp and Jake Haener is listed as the number two quarterback ahead of rookie Spencer Rattler.

WGNO-TV Sports Director Ed Daniels, who suffered a heart attack, while covering Saints training camp in Southern California is back in New Orleans. Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson paid for a medevac flight so that he can be in a New Orleans hospital.

The Pelicans are reportedly moving on from Bally Sports and will air their locally produced games on Gray Television channels, which will allow more people to watch their games for free on over-the-air TV. Play-by-play voice Joel Meyers and color commentator Antonio Daniels will continue calling Pelicans games.

Governor Landry’s statement to parents who disagree with the Ten Commandments law prompts a response from a plaintiff in a lawsuit against it. Brooke Thorington has more.

The Ponchatoula Police Department has arrested a 16-year-old boy after he threatened to kill two female school mates. Police Chief Bry Layrisson says the suspect told other students the two girls would not make it past the first day. Layrisson says he can’t remember having to stop a school threat before a school year began.

The Gulf of Mexico’s dead zone, an area with critically low oxygen levels, is significantly larger this year, covering about 6,700 square miles making this the 12th largest dead zone in the 38 years of recorded measurements. LSU Oceanography Professor Nancy Rabalais says this hypoxic zone, is mainly caused by nutrient pollution from agriculture and wastewater, coming down the Mississippi River, and severely affects marine life.

The Colorado State University Hurricane Forecast Team has revised its long-term forecast and the researchers are now calling for 23 named storms for this year, which means we could see 19 more. Researcher Levi Silvers there’s a really good chance Louisiana will at least see a tropical storm this year…

And he says there’s a 20-percent chance Louisiana will see a major hurricane.

At the Olympics, former LSU pole vaulter and Lafayette native Mondo Duplantis, who competed for his mother’s home country of Sweden, vaulted 20 and a half feet to break the world record for the ninth time and win a gold medal. Duplantis says in the moment, he wasn’t focused on getting the world record, he was just focused on making the jump.

Duplantis started pole vaulting as a child in his backyard in Lafayette, using a pit dug by his parents-slash-coaches, who had met when they were both on the LSU track and field team. Nine world records later, Duplantis says he didn’t think about setting a record while he was vaulting, but it all hit him once he hit the ground.

Cut 4 (12) “…freaking out.”

After he won gold and set an Olympic record, Duplantis had the bar moved one centimeter higher than world record height. Though he missed his first two jumps, he made the third and sealed a world record. He says he’s so thrilled about winning, he can’t possibly think about what’s next.

Duplantis is 24-years-old and the next Summer Olympics is in Los Angeles in 2028.

Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, and is expected to introduce him at a rally in Philadelphia this evening. John Couvillon of JMC Analytics says Walz is a safe pick for the Harris campaign, adding Walz is…

Walz has shown that he can work well with both parties, as he spent his first term as governor with a divided state Congress. However, Couvillon says Walz has proved himself to be quite progressive since getting re-elected.

Though Walz as progressive as Harris, Couvillon says the white, male governor provides a good optical foil to Harris. Couvillon drew comparisons between them and another Democratic presidential pair: Barack Obama choosing Joe Biden as his vice president in 2008.

Before serving as governor, Walz was a teacher, member of Congress and command sergeant major in the Army National Guard.

An arrest has been made in connection to the July 22nd murder of a Marksville man. Tim Ryan with the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Department says officers responded to a call of a deceased person near LA Highway 1192 and found Gary P. Normand of Marksville deceased.

One of the suspects is 19-year-old Jacob E. Michot, also of Marksville, who was arrested on July 30th on charges of Principle to 2nd Degree Murder and Possession of Stolen Things related to Normand’s murder. Ryan says Michot isn’t the only suspect in this case.

Michot is in custody of APSO with a 1.1 million dollar bond.

Louisiana Revenue Secretary Richard Nelson told the Baton Rouge press club that he would like to see a special session early next year, before the start of the regular session in April. Nelson says tax reform is needed in this state and the proposed changes should go before voters in a special election later in 2025.

Louisiana performed poorly in the study because of its high infant mortality rate, the high rate of low birth-weight babies, and not enough pediatricians and family medicine physicians. But Wallethub’s Cassandra Happe says Louisiana performs well in a few other categories…

Lafayette’s Mondo Duplantis cemented his legacy as the greatest pole vaulter ever as the 24 year-old set a new world record in the pole vault in the Paris Olympics. The former LSU star cleared the bar at 20-feet, six inches. It’s the ninth time the Swedish-American pole vaulter broke a world record.

Out of the world stuff from Lafayette’s Mondo Duplantis at the Paris Olympics. The former LSU track star set an Olympic and world record with a pole vault of 20 feet and six inches. But former LSU beach volleyball stars Taryn Cloth and Kristen Nuss were eliminated from medal contention when they lost to a team from Canada.

LSU football comes in at number 12 in the preseason coaches poll. The Tigers will look a lot different this season with junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at the helm. Star offensive tackle Will Campbell says he can’t wait to see “Nuss” light up the SEC this season…

One of the big changes for Louisiana Tech in the offseason was the hirting of defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson from Northern Iowa. In 11 seasons at Northern Iowa, Johnson’s defense ranked in the FCS top 10 in turnovers six times. Senior defensive back Cedric Woods says he and the defense are looking to disrupt opposing offenses…

Saints backup quarterback Jake Haener was not at practice yesterday, which gave Spencer Rattler an opportunity to show what he could do and according to media rep0orts, Rattler has shown significant improvement during camp. Also, the connection between Derek Carr and Chris Olave looks improved as those two head into their second year playing together.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill plans to make the argument in court that public schools can display the Ten Commandments in every classroom by showing them in historical and cultural context. Murrill says this would not violate the separation of church versus state clause in the constitution

The oil spill in Bayou Lafourche from the Crescent Midstream pumping station in Raceland on Saturday has been successfully contained. The spill was traced to a leaking fuel tank and valve failure, prompting immediate response efforts to minimize environmental damage. The containment was achieved through the coordinated efforts of local, state, and federal agencies, along with specialized clean-up crews. Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson…

Booms and skimmers were deployed to prevent the spread of the more than 34-thousand gallons of oil, and vacuum trucks have been used to remove oil that contaminated the water. Environmental monitoring teams have been dispatched to assess the impact on local wildlife and vegetation.  Chaisson says preliminary reports suggest minimal long-term damage.

Funeral services begin tonight for Lafayette Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette who was killed in the line of duty last week in Jeanerette during a hostage standoff. Interim Lafayette Police Chief Paul Truard says Jolivette went above and beyond for his community…

Tonight’s wake is a private event reserved for family and members of the Lafayette and Opelousas Police Departments.  Truard says he has been receiving many calls from the White House, the FBI, the Attorney General’s Office and the Mayor-President’s Office, to name a few.

It’s report day for the LSU football team. This is Brian Kelly’s 35th season as head coach. Kelly says name, image and likeness deals is not changing how he recruits, in fact he’s looking to hire a salary cap manager to decide how much a player should receive through NIL deals…

Kelly admits he’s not capable of determining a recruit’s potential NIL income, so he’ll let other staff members determine that while he tries to convince a student-athlete to come to LSU because they’ll become a better player and person…
