Monroe Police are looking for a 14-year-old who they believe shot two 17-year-olds, one of them died at a local hospital. The suspected teenage gunman has been identified Rayveon Lewis. The shooting happened back on December 28th.

Especially with tax season upon us, the Better Business Bureau is urging you to be extra vigilant when it comes to scams. Andrew Greenstein reports they’re becoming more prevalent – and more sophisticated.

State Fire Marshal investigators are trying to determine if separate fatal fires in the northern half of the state this week were caused by electrical failures. The deadly fires took place in the towns of Sarepta and Jonesville and in both cases, elderly residents died. State Fire Marshal spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue reminds the public not to connect extension cords together…

According to data from the U-S Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of people employed in Louisiana has exceeded two-million people for seven consecutive months, which is a record in Louisiana’s economic history. Adam Knapp, the CEO of Leaders for a Better Louisiana, says the next economic record the state can hit is a record for the number of nonfarm jobs, which was set in 2014. Knapp says breaking the all-time jobs record is likely since the state’s economic outlook for this year looks strong.

LSU has added another quarterback to its roster as the Tigers signed former five-star recruit Husan Longstreet, who entered the transfer portal after one season at USC. The State Fire Marshal’s office says two elderly residents died in two separate house fires this week. A 77-year-old man died in a house fire in Webster Parish and the other fatal house fire occurred in Catahola Parish, in the town of Jonesville. State Fire Marshal spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the causes of both fires are unclear at this time…

Carmen Million, the president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of South Central Louisiana, says scammers used to mainly target senior citizens; but now, scammers have broadened their potential target base.

Carmen Million, the president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of South Central Louisiana, says before, you could tell which calls and emails were scams, based on improper or broken English – but not anymore.

Cut 3 (10) “…if it’s legitimate.”

Million says scammers used to mainly target senior citizens, because they’re the ones most likely to trust them and fall for these scams – but now, scammers have now broadened their potential target base.

Cut 4 (08) “…amount of people”

Million says regardless of how legitimate these scammers are starting to sound, there are still a few specific things that should immediately indicate that the communication is not legitimate.

And Million says if the caller says he or she is from the IRS or the Social Security Administration, that should immediately throw up a red flag. She points out that the reason that it’s impossible to reach either agency by phone is not because they’re trying to call you.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is reminding you of the importance of having working smoke alarms in the wake of a pair of deadly house fires this week. The first happened Sunday afternoon near Shreveport, in which a 77-year-old man was killed. The second happened the following evening in Catahoula Parish, in which a 76-year-old woman died. Ashley Rodrigue with the State Fire Marshal’s Office says neither home had a working smoke alarm.

Rodrigue says the causes of both fires are unclear at this time.

Investigators, however, say things like space heaters were not a factor in either fire. With electrical-rated factors not being ruled out, Rodrigue is reminding you about electricity safety, including not connecting extension cords together.

Below freezing temperatures are expected tonight for north Louisiana. National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Knapp says they are expecting temperatures to get below 32 degrees as far south as Natchitoches and Jena…

Howard started this past season as the starting Q-B for U-L Lafayette, but he injured his oblique and did not regain his starting spot. Howard was at Ole Miss during the 2023 and 24 seasons and if Trinidad Chambliss gains another year of eligibility through the court system, Howard will be a backup once again for the Rebels.

McMahon’s record as LSU’s coach in SEC play is 14-43. Athletics director Verge Ausberry told the Advocate they are giving the support the men’s basketball’s program needs, but if they do not make the NCAA Tournament, they will have to re-evaluate.

Louisiana Tech concludes a three-game homestand tonight as the Bulldogs host Middle Tennessee. The Bulldogs are looking for a little revenge, as they lost to the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro by 37 points on January 2nd. Tip off at the TAC is at 6:30.

The Pelicans lost to Denver 122 to 116 last night. New Orleans has the worst record in the Western Conference and they host one of the worst teams in the East tonight, the Brooklyn Nets.

LSU is not done adding quarterbacks to its roster. Colorado transfer Ryan Staub is reportedly scheduled to visit LSU this week. Staub has played the last three seasons for Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes. For his career in Boudler, he was 53-for-98 for 681 yards and four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Wisconsin running back Dilin Jones has committed to LSU. Jones rushed for 300 yards on 76 carries in 2025, before a turf toe injury ended his season.

Former LSU quarterback Colin Hurley has committed to Michigan. Former Tigers starting QB T-J Finley plans to play at U-I-W. It will be Finley’s seventh team in seven seasons.

Walker Howard is back in the transfer portal. The former St. Thomas More star started the season as the staring Q-B for the Cajuns, but he lost his job to Lunch Winfield because of an injury. Howard is looking to play for his fourth different school.

Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has been named a finalist for the NFL Rookie of the Year Award. Shough’s toughest competition for the award is believed to be Panthers receiver Tee-Mack McMillan, who caught 70 passes for one-thousand yards and seven touchdowns.

The LSU men’s basketball team looks to win its first SEC game of the season tonight as the Tigers host Kentucky at 6 p.m. Coach Matt McMahon says limiting turnovers is the key, because early turnovers have forced them to play from behind the last two games.

It looks like LSU’s starting point guard D-J Thomas will miss his fourth straight game as he’s listed as doubtful for tonight’s game.

Jennings Police charge a 28-year-old woman with feticide after investigators say a drug overdose led to the death of her unborn child. Jennings Police Chief Danny Semmes says they’ve never investigated a case like this…

Semmes says Shandelynn Benoit was taken into custody at the same residence where the overdose occurred. She was 37 weeks pregnant when her unborn child was pronounced dead. Investigators say Benoit admitted to using fentanyl and heroin.

A California doctor has been indicted on felony charges for allegedly mailing abortion pills to a woman in St. Tammany Parish. According to court documents, Dr. Remy Coeytaux mailed a medication known as an abortion pill, to a woman who said she was forced to take them by her boyfriend. Attorney General Liz Murrill says Coeytaux is not providing healthcare, instead he’s dealing drugs…

Prosecutors in Louisiana are also involved in a similar case with a doctor out of New York.

 

Shreveport finalizes a deal with a company owned by entertainer 50 Cent to develop three entertainment venues in the city. 50 Cent is investing almost 125-million dollars, while the state is providing up to 50-million dollars in performance-based funding. Grant Nuckolls with Shreveport Film and Entertainment Economic Development says if 50 Cent does not keep up with his end of the bargain, the state’s funding will go away.

The goal of the investment is to make northwest Louisiana a serious player in film and TV production, along with bringing in additional live events.

The search is on for a 26-year-old woman who escaped from the Iberia Parish courthouse just before was set to be sentenced for an aggravated battery charge. Jada Landry fled the area in a vehicle. That vehicle was found, but Landry remains on the run.

A California doctor has been indicted on felony charges for allegedly trafficking abortion pills into Louisiana. Doctor Remy Coeytaux has been charged in St. Tammany Parish with Criminal Abortion by Means of Abortion Inducing Drugs. Attorney General Liz Murrill says her office is seeking to extradite Doctor Coeytaux to Louisiana…

Coeytaux is also facing a lawsuit from a Texas man who alleges he illegally provided his girlfriend with abortion pills. Coeytaux has not responded to the accusations made against him.

 

The NFIB says optimism among small business owners continues to rise and uncertainty has declined to its lowest level since June 2024. NFIB state director Leah Long says small business owners begin the year with a greater sense of optimism, but challenges remain…

Authorities are looking for a 27-year-old New Iberia woman who fled the Iberia Parish courthouse on Monday as she was about to be sentenced on an aggravated battery charge. After leaving the courthouse, Jada Landry posted on Facebook…”They can have their handcuffs back, but not me. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for information on her whereabouts.
