The NFL releases its 2026 schedule tonight and it’s been leaked the Saints will open the season on the road at Detroit. The Black and Gold will also be on the road Thanksgiving weekend as they will visit Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and the Bengals in Cincinnati.

In high school football news…two-time winning state championship coach Joe Spatafora is leaving Union Parish for a high school coaching job in Arkansas. Spatafora led the Farmers to state titles in 2013 and 2023. Coach Spat and Union Parish were also runners-up in 2020, 2021 and 2022.  His record at Union was 179-74.

McNeese is mourning the death of its legendary football coach Bobby Keasler. Keasler guided the Cowboys to four Southland Conference football championships and in 1997 Keasler was at the helm when the Pokes made an appearance in the Division One-Double-A national championship. The New Iberia native also coached at U-L-M for three seasons before returning to Lake Charles to retire. He was 80 years old.

 

The LSU baseball team finishes out the regular season with a three-game series against 19th ranked Florida that starts tonight at Alex Box Stadium. The only way the Tigers can make the NCAA Tournament at this point is to win next week’s SEC Tournament. Coach Jay Johnson says they’re focused on the Gators, but they also have an eye toward the SEC Tourney.

The Cajuns host Sun Belt Conference leader Coastal Carolina for senior weekend that begins tonight at Tigue Moore Field. Coach Matt Deggs says one senior he will definitely miss is Lee Amedee, the team’s second leading hitter.

The political battle between Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill and New Orleans leaders continues to escalate with Murrill now threatening to remove Mayor Helena Moreno and other elected officials for violating state law if they go through with an election for a new court clerk. UNO political science professor Ed Chervenak says the state can tell parishes and cities how they organize their government….

Mayor Helena Moreno says Murrill has violated state law by threatening to remove her and others from office.

The legislature has sent to the Governor’s desk a bill that sets new election dates for the six US House races, and temporarily move them back to open primaries. House Governmental Affairs Chairman Beau Beaullieu was asked why this year’s U.S. House races can’t be closed primaries…:

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says a fraud-detection platform called Anti-Fraud One, led to the arrest of six Ouachita Parish residents who were involved in a long-running insurance fraud scheme involving fire and water damage claims…

Education Scorecard ranks Louisiana first among states in reading growth from 2022 to 2025 and second among states in math growth over that same time frame. Governor Jeff Landry congratulates the students for achieving historic academic gains.

This Scorecard follows the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, where Louisiana jumped 17 spots up to number-32 — the highest ranking in the state’s history.

The Louisiana Legislature has passed a bill that sets new election dates for the suspended U-S House races. The elections will move back to an Open Primary with the primary set for November third and a December 12th runoff House Governmental Affairs Chairman Beau Beaullie was asked if it’s legal to have the Senate races as closed primaries while the House races are open primaries…

Qualifying for U-S House open primaries will be August 5th through the 7th.

Coming up today on the Senate floor, Louisiana Senators will debate the bill that would return the state’s Congressional District map to five Republican majority districts and one Democratic majority district. The House Democratic delegation knows they do not have the votes to stop it, so litigation is likely once the bill is signed by Governor Landry.

 

Louisiana students continue to outperform most students when it comes to reading and math growth. According to a new report from the Education Scorecard, Louisiana ranked first among states in reading growth and second in math progress from 2022 to 2025. Governor Landry says when the same report came out last year, Louisiana held the same rankings in both metrics in the period from 2019-2024….

It will be the final games at the Box for a couple of key contributors to last year’s national championship team, outfielder Chris Stanfield and pitcher Zac Cowan. Coach Jay Johnson says it’s rare to have talented players like these two guys stay for their senior seasons.

Four schools won baseball state titles in Sulphur yesterday. Claiborne Christian blanked Maurepas 8 to nothing. Glenmora over Pitkin 3 to 2. Ouachita Christian shut out Covenant Christian four-zip. Mangham outscored Welsh 11 to 7.

Louisiana Tech and the Ragin Cajuns begin today on the bubble to make the NCAA Tournament, if they are unable to win their conference championships. The Diamond Dogs host Sam Houston. Tech is 17-10 in Conference USA, while the Bearkats are 12-15.

The Ragin Cajuns begin a series against Coastal Carolina, which leads Southern Miss by one game for first place in the Sun Belt. Not only are they trying to win a regular-season conference championship, but they also have a chance to host an NCAA Regional. U-L Lafayette Coach Matt Deggs says both teams do a lot of things well.

We’ve known for a while that the Saints will be playing a game in Paris this season. Now, we know the date and their opponent – October 25th against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jeff Duncan, who covers the Saints for The Advocate and NOLA-dot-com, says everyone thought that their opponent would be the Browns, but the NFL had other ideas.

The Netflix hit series “Quarterback” will return for a third season on July 14th.  It’s gives viewers unprecedented access to four NFL quarterbacks and this year cameras will go behind the scenes with former LSU star Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders. Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield, Tennessee’s Cam Ward and Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco will also be featured.

 

The LSU baseball team will begin its final SEC series of the season tomorrow night as the Tigers take on 19th ranked Florida. The only way LSU can make the NCAA Tournament is if they win the SEC Tournament, so Coach Jay Johnson says they are going to focus on this weekend’ series with an eye toward the SEC Tournament next week…

Florida will send Aidan King to the hill tomorrow. He’s 7-2 with 2.19 ERA. LSU did not name a starter, so it’s possible LSU is holding William Schmidt to next Tuesday when the Tigers open play in the SEC Tournament.

The Southland Conference Tournament begins tomorrow with double-elimination play in the Hammond and Beaumont Bracket. McNeese and Nicholls will face off tomorrow in Hammond, while Southeastern hosts H-C-U.

The two teams have met 17 times, with the Saints leading the all-time series, nine-to-eight, including wins in four of the last five matchups.

This game will officially be a Saints home game. Duncan says in a way, it really will be a Saints home game – the Saints have exclusive marketing rights to France.

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee spent all night debating a new Congressional  map and after nearly ten hours a map was approved at around 4:30 this morning that has one majority Black district. The committee heard hours of testimony from the public who urged Senators to pass a six-district map with two majority Black districts. New Orleans Senator Royce Duplessis explained why opponents to a 5-1 map waited hours to testify…

Duplessis directed those comments towards Republican West Monroe Senator Jay Morris, who is the author of the map that favors Republicans to represent five of the six districts.…

Duplessis told West Monroe Republican Jay Morris that Blacks would be underrepresented with a five-one map…

Before approving a five-one Congressional map, Senate Governmental Affairs rejected a 4-2 map, where two districts in southeast Louisiana would give Black voters an opportunity to elect the candidate of their choice. The measure failed on four-three party line vote as all four Republicans voted against the measure. The vote angered many who spent the night at the capitol…

Another member of the public told the committee she thought the passionate testimony in support of a Congressional map with Black majority districts would sway the Republican lawmakers on the panel, but it did not…

The full Senate is expected to vote Thursday on a five-one Congressional map that Republicans support.

Louisiana State Police has agreed to pay the family of Ronald Greene 4.8-million dollars to settle the wrongful death case. The settlement comes almost seven years to the day after a group of white troopers fatally beat Greene, who was Black, during a traffic stop in Union Parish. Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says given the degree of liability for the loss of a human life, this is a very reasonable settlement.

Borghardt says this was the best possible outcome for everyone involved.

As for whether this settlement will serve as a deterrent from something like this from happening again, Borghardt says this is more of a case of the settlement being the icing on the cake.

In a statement, Attorney General Liz Murrill says the state agreed that it was time to end the litigation, which arose under the prior administration, and put the matter behind everyone involved.

Louisiana ranks first in the nation for reading growth according to a new report from the Education Scorecard. State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley says this latest scorecard measured growth from 2022 to 2025….

Louisiana also ranks second for math growth from 2022 to 2025. Brumley says the rankings are a point of pride for our state, but they are far from satisfied and will keep pushing for greater academic outcomes…

The meeting lasted more than nine hours; but at 4:30 this morning, the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee passed a new congressional map that has one majority Democratic district and five majority Republican districts. Prior to the final vote, members called out committee members for already having their minds made up.

The meeting took all night, because numerous people went before the committee to express their support for a Congressional map with two majority minority districts. West Monroe Senator Jay Morris is the author of the map with one majority Black district and was asked how he felt that dozens of people came to the capitol to oppose his bill….

Initial reports had New Orleans playing the Browns, but it turns out the Black and Gold will take on Pittsburgh in France on October 25th at 8:30 AM central time. ESPN College GameDay has decided where they will be for the season opener and that will be Baton Rouge for Lane Kiffin’s debut on September 5th as the Tigers will host Clemson. Kick-off for that game is at 6:30 and it was also announced the LSU-Ole Miss game two weeks later will also kick-off at 6:30.

 

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is receiving backlash for discussing in an interview with Vanity Fair about the struggles he had recruiting to Ole Miss because of the school’s ties to the Confederacy. Kiffin told On-3 he apologizes to anybody at Ole Miss or in Mississippi if he offended anyone, but it’s a narrative that Ole Miss coaches have been fighting forever.

The man who wrote the article, Chris Smith, was a guest on Tiger Rag Radio last night and said Kiffin knew the statement might strike a nerve, but never asked him to keep quote out of his story…

Lost in all of the redistricting discussion is the news that Louisiana lawmakers have less money to spend than what was originally forecasted. Melinda Deslatte with the Public Affairs Research Council says this jeopardizes Governor Landry’s request to double the funding of the Louisiana GATOR Scholarship program, the state’s voucher program. She says Senate President Cameron Henry was not on board with Landry’s request anyways.

Lawmakers have until June 1st to approve a budget that will be 104-million dollars lighters because of the new economic forecast adopted.
