The State Fire Marshall’s Office is still investigating what caused a fire that killed twin two-year-old girls in Alexandria on Saturday. Eric Gill reports…

Baton Rouge Police are currently looking for a suspect accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl after taking her from a local park. Sgt. Mary Ann Godawa (ga-DOW-wa) says the incident happened on December 13 when the girl was lured near the car of the suspect…

Godawa says the suspect forced the girl into the car and drove her to another location where the assault took place. She says the suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall with a medium to heavyset build. Godawa says information is limited at this time, but detectives have been working non-stop to find this suspect…

She says they are also searching for a gold or tan four-door Nissan Maxima that was seen around the park at the time of the incident. Godawa asks anyone with information on this case to please contact Crime Stoppers…

He says they do not have a conclusive cause of the blaze at this time. The children were at home with their father when the fire broke out. Browning says firefighters were able to remove the children, named Annaya and Makaya, from the home…

Autopsies are pending on both girls. Browning says it will be after the Christmas holiday before the investigation is complete. It is unknown at this time if the home had working smoke detectors. Browning says it appears the fire started near a bedroom…

Over one-hundred workers at a processing plant near New Iberia that produces yams will have to find new work. McCall Farms told employees at the facility they are shutting operations down in south Louisiana and moving all sweet potato processing to a plant in South Carolina. Mike Tarantino is the director of the Iberia Industrial Development Foundation

Tarantino says about 140 people work at the plant, most of those are seasonal employees. He says the state is assisting the soon to be laid off workers…

Today is the first full day of winter and many have not forgotten last year’s winter, which saw colder than normal temperatures and a few rounds of frozen precipitation.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says the climate prediction center’s forecast for the next three months indicates we could see a repeat..:

Keim says the wildcard right now is the El Nino which has been in the forecast for a while, but hasn’t formed yet. He says the climate prediction center is giving the system a 60% chance of forming sometime this winter…:

Keim says if the El Nino does form the way they think it will this winter, we’ll get more rain and even possibly some freezing rain like we saw last winter…:

A new poll shows that Republican Senator David Vitter’s change in position on Common Core is popular with voters. Vitter announced earlier this month he opposes the new educational testing standards and a Southern Media and Opinion Research survey found that 64-percent agree with Vitter. Here in the final days of 2014, there are some things taxpayers can do to put them in a better financial position in 2015. John Theriot is an accountant with the Louisiana Society of CPAs and he says business owners should accelerate expenses, because anything they can pay before year’s end will get the 2014 deduction.:

Theriot says now would also be a good time to let your employer know you want to up your contribution on your 401K or change your filing status on your W4. He says before the new year, you also might want to think about making charitable donations, so you can deduct it on your 2014 tax form…

The LSU Tigers are back at practice this week as they continue preparations to play Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl. Even though the Bayou Bengals have some extra time to prepare for this game, Coach Les Miles says don’t expect many changes when it comes to game planning for this game

The other issue hanging around the LSU football program….Is how many underclassmen will leave for the NFL? There’s a report LSU cornerback Jalen Collins plans to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft, but Miles is optimistic they won’t see as many juniors leaving for the pros early as previous seasons

For the fourth straight season, the Ragin Cajuns have ended the year by winning the R-and-L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. U-L Lafayette defeated Nevada 16-3 on Saturday in the Mercedes Benz Superdome. Coach Mark Hudspeth has now led the Cajuns to four straight…nine-win seasons

What makes it hurt even more is that, New Orleans finishes the year with five straight losses at the Dome. Coach Sean Payton on the lack of wins at home this year

It’s now at six-point-five percent, but executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission, Curt Eysink, says more and more people are looking for a job, because word is getting out about companies and businesses either expanding or re-locating to Louisiana…

A group called Senate Conservatives Action is running ads slamming Congressman Steve Scalise, claiming he’s on the President’s side by helping to pass a spending bill that maintains funding for Obamacare. But LaPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says Scalise pushed for the measure, because didn’t want a government shutdown. Alford adds these ads can’t be taken lightly…:

There’s speculation former US Senate candidate, Col Rob Maness, will run against Scalise in 2016.

Both teams have dual threat quarterbacks, Terrance Broadway for the Cajuns and Cody Fajardo for the Wolfpack.

The Ragin Cajuns go after their fourth straight New Orleans Bowl victory when they face Nevada on Saturday morning. The three previous victories have not been easy as U-L Lafayette won those games by a total of 14 points. They are a one-point underdog against the Wolfpack.

On Sunday in the Mercedes Benz-Superdome, the Saints host the Falcons. Quarterback Drew Brees is coming off a performance where he threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says the short passing game worked for them on Monday night and they’ll use it again on Sunday…

A win for the Saints and a Carolina loss and New Orleans will win the NFC South.

The Pelicans, who have won five of their last seven, have a busy weekend. They host Portland on Saturday night and then visit the Thunder on Sunday. The Trail Blazers lead the northwest division, while O-K-C is coming off a trip to the West Coast.

There’s a good in-state match-up in college basketball on Saturday afternoon. The Ragin Cajuns will visit Northwestern State. U-L Lafayette has averaged 108 points in their last three contests. The Demons will look for a lot of scoring from Zeek Woodley, who is averaging 24 points a game. That’s fourth best in the country.

Also on Saturday…McNeese will welcome the University of Toledo to the Burton Coliseum at one o’ clock. The Rockets have won four in a row, while the Cowboys are 5-and-3 on the season.

In college baseball…LSU shortstop Alex Bregman and left-handed pitcher Jared Poche have been named second-team preseason all-Americans by Collegiate Baseball magazine. And Southeastern Louisiana’s Jameson Fisher and Brett Hoffman have been named to the Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American teams.

The fall shrimping season comes to a close on some state waters Monday and shrimper are calling this an average season for fishermen. Daren Martin, owner of Martin’s Fresh Shrimp in Chauvin, says this was a fair season for shrimpers…

Martin says there were those early cold fronts that came through the state, but the water stayed in the marsh allowing shrimpers to continue to work. He says he’s seen better seasons and worse seasons…

Martin says the price of shrimp fluctuated a bit during the fall season, but, on average, was a little better than they are used to getting. He says, now that shrimpers will have to go into the Gulf of Mexico to get shrimp, consumers should expect to see a bit of a price hike…

After working several fatal crashes last weekend that resulted in nine deaths, State Police troopers are urging drivers to use extra caution while on the highways during this holiday period. Sergeant Nick Manale says driver error is responsible for many of the wrecks they are seeing

New employment numbers are out and Louisiana’s labor force grew to a record 2,179,837 in November. The number of people employed in the state jumped by 59,419 over the year. LWC Executive Director Curt Eysink says people are responding to Louisiana’s strong and sustained job growth by joining our workforce in record numbers…:

Eysink says, over the month of November, we added about 7,000 people working in Louisiana. He says this is outpacing a national trend..:

Louisiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.5 percent in November which is a .9 percent increase from last year. But Eysink says the main reason our unemployment rate has risen is because of the speed of the growth of the labor force. Yahoo Sports’ Rand Gellin is reporting that junior cornerback Jalen Collins will likely enter the draft after the Music City Bowl. But Gellin reports that defensive end Danielle Hunter will likely return for his senior season.

Many Ragin Cajun fans are making their way down to New Orleans today for tomorrow’s R-and-L Carriers New Orleans Bowl contest against Nevada. The Ragin Cajuns will hold a Fan Fest Friday afternoon at the New Orleans Marriott on Canal Street. And Billy Ferrante, executive director of the New Orleans Bowl, says there’s a concert tonight at the New Orleans Arena featuring Kool and the Gang and Cheap Trick

The U-L players will not be at the concert. They have an early wake-up call, because of the 10 A-M kick-off.

The L-S-U men’s basketball team went on the road last night and defeated UAB 79-70. Jarell Martin and Keith Hornsby led the way as Martin had 25 points, while Hornsby had 24. The Tigers trailed by six points at halftime, but shot 57-percent from the field in the second half.

Louisiana Tech snapped a two-game losing streak with a 79-54 win over Nicholls State. The Bulldogs hit 15 three-pointers. Xavian Stapleton had five of them and finished with 18 points off the bench. TJ Carpenter had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Colonels.

Nice win for the Pelicans last night as they shot down the Rockets 99-90. Big night for Anthony Davis as he had 30 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. New Orleans outscored Houston in the 4th quarter, 34-22. The Pels host Northwest division leader Portland on Saturday night at the Smoothie King Center.

Governor Bobby Jindal says he opposes the President’s plan to “normalize” relations with Communist Cuba, but Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says resumed trade would benefit Louisiana. He says other non-democratic countries enjoy normal trade relations with the US…:

US Senator David Vitter has a double digit lead over other 2015 Governor candidates in Louisiana according to a Southern Media and Opinion Research survey. But Pollster Bernie Pinsonat says the same poll also found 40% of respondents don’t approve of Vitter’s performance:

The Saints started this up-and-down season with a loss to Atlanta on opening day, but a win this Sunday against the Falcons could result in an NFC South Championship. Atlanta is 5-and-9 on the season, but Quarterback Matt Ryan is playing at a high level. He’s thrown for over 300 yards in his last three games and for the season he’s thrown for 41-hundred passing yards and 27 touchdowns. Coach Sean Payton says the Falcons have an explosive offense…

Meanwhile, Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who is on injured reserve, tweeted out the Falcons will be bringing a broom to the bayou as he expects Atlanta to beat the Saints for a second time this season.

Rand Getlin from Yahoo Sports tweeted out earlier today that LSU defensive lineman Danielle Hunter is leaning towards returning for his senior season. Hunter leads the team this year with tackles for a loss.

The Ragin Cajuns are getting ready to face Nevada in the R-and-L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Saturday. It’s been a busy 48 hours for senior defensive back Corey Trim. His fiancee, Mykeyah Grafton, gave birth to a a little girl on Wednesday morning. As the team was traveling from Lafayette to New Orleans, they dropped Trim off in Baton Rouge so he can be there for the birth.

In basketball tonight…LSU is at UAB. The Tigers may have to start freshman Jalyn Patterson at point guard, because of injuries to Josh Gray and Tim Quarterman. Louisiana Tech hosts Nicholls State. The Bulldogs are looking to end a two-game losing streak, while the Colonels are looking for their third win of the season. And the Pelicans are at Houston. Guard Tyreke Evans is questionable with a knee contusion.

It’s Falcons week for the Saints. But more importantly, New Orleans can win the NFC South with a win on Sunday and a Carolina loss to Cleveland. Coach Sean Payton says he doesn’t feel any extra pressure to make sure his team is ready to play, with so much on the line…

In high school football…Haynesville’s David Franklin has been named the Class One-A coach of the Year. Haynesville’s Kendrick Jackson has been named the defensive player of the year in One-A and Elton running back Marcus Lemoine is the offensive player of the year.

A banged up LSU men’s basketball team takes to the court tonight in Birmingham where the UAB Blazers face the Tigers at eight P-M. LSU guard Josh Gray is out with an ankle injury, and guard Tim Quarterman, who is averaging 12 points a game, is questionable as well with an injury. Freshman Jalyn Patterson will likely start at point gard.

Louisiana Tech looks to rebound from a loss to the Ragin Cajuns, when they host Nicholls State tonight at 6:30. Speaking of U-L Lafayette, they beat Milligan College 69-55.

The Pelicans are in Houston to face a tired Rockets team tonight. The Rockets needed overtime to beat the Nuggets in Denver last night. Houston comes into tonight’s game with a 19-and-5 record. The Pels are 12-and-12, but they’ve averaged 112 points in their last six games. Tip-off is at seven P-M.

In other NBA news…former LSU Tiger Johnny O’ Bryant made his NBA debut last night and made a field goal in five minutes. O’ Bryant’s Bucks lost to Portland 104-97.
