As of Thursday morning, the Red River was at 33.9 feet. NWS says this is the first time the river has reached flood stage in Shreveport in 25 years. Mayeaux says this flood event is something that should not be taken lightly…

Officials with the “Hollywood South” movie industry are apprehensive about changes made by the Senate Finance Committee to a bill that reforms the film tax credit program. The committee lowered the cap for film tax credits from $200 million to $180 million. Louisiana film industry consultant, Sherri McConnell, says this causes concern about projects already in the pipeline, as well as the future growth of the industry…

She says a lowered tax credit cap will limit the ability for increased film production in the state. Lafayette Representative Joel Robideaux’s bill also featured a provision that would provide incentives to build an indigenous film industry in Louisiana. McConnell says that part of the measure was completely gutted…

McConnell says, at this point, this is not a very promising piece of legislation for the film industry on many levels. She says this bill was designed to grow Louisiana businesses and put Louisiana residents to work. The full House approves legislation that sets up rules and regulations for the dispensing of medical marijuana in Louisiana. New Orleans Representative Helena Moreno says under the proposed law, a patient who suffers from glaucoma, cancer or cerebral palsy will have the option of using medicinal marijuana in a pill form…

The bill by state senator Fred Mills establishes where the medical marijuana will be dispensed and where it will be grown and who will handle the production of the medicine. But Leesville Representative James Armes expressed skeptism about the legislation…

Moreno added some more amendments to the bill, in an attempt to calm fears that the growing of medicial marijuana in Louisiana could lead to criminal activity or corruption. She made the case to the rest of the House that the bill has tight controls on it and it will be very beneficial…

Alex Lange has been named the starter in the Game One of the Super Regional Series.

The LSU men’s golf team is back in Baton Rouge today after winning the program’s first national title in 60 years. The Tigers defeated USC in match-play to claim the championship trophy. Ben Taylor’s nine-foot par putt on 18 wrapped up LSU’s first men’s golf championship since 1955.

According to the Baton Rouge Advocate, Charles Hanagriff, Patrick Wright, Lyn Rollins, Pelicans announcer Sean Kelley and the voice of Northwestern State, Patrick Netherton, are among the finalists to replace Jim Hawthorne as LSU’s play-by-play man. The report also says there are some national candidates as well.

The R-and-L Carriers New Orleans Bowl is returning to a primetime kickoff. The game this year will be played on Saturday, December 19th at 8 PM in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Last year’s game, which featured the Ragin Cajuns for a third consecutive year, kicked-off at 10 A-M.

A four-star recruit from Destrehan High School has given his verbal pledge to play at LSU. Glen Logan is a six-foot-four, 300-pound defensive tackle, who also had scholarship offers from several SEC schools. Logan helped Destrehan reach the Class 5A championship game a year ago.

Former LSU Tiger Trindon Holliday has signed with the Oakland Raiders. Holliday played for three different teams in 2014, before he was released by San Francisco 49ers.

State Revenue Secretary Tim Barfield says there’s a greater possibility Governor Jindal will veto the budget, if  a tax credit for higher education is NOT approved by the legislature. Barfield says the legislation is needed to offset the revenue generating tax bills already approved by the House. He says without the legislation, cuts to higher ed may be needed to balance the budget…

The SAVE tax credit failed on a 10-9 vote in the House Ways and Means Committee. But the legislation was revived, when it was added to three different bills approved by Senate Finance committee.  Chairman Joel Robideaux explained why some lawmakers are uncomfortable with the tax credit…

Governor Jindal signed a pledge with Americans for Tax Reform to not raise taxes and has said he will veto a budget that is not revenue neutral. Barfield says this is an important piece of the puzzle to be able to get to a budget the governor would sign…

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s office says they’ve made nine arrests of people they believe are involved in a very complex residential burglary case targeting firearms and electronics. Lt. Tommy Carnline says they’ve been investigating several daytime residential burglaries since mid April. He says it all came together this week and they were able to make the nine arrests on various ranging charges…:

Carnline says the suspects were all connected in a stolen item for drugs scheme…:

Carnline says every time they would arrest one person or conduct a search warrant during this investigation, it would lead them to another possible suspect. State Police say a deputy with the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office is under arrest after being found with a large amount of marijuana in his vehicle. Sgt. James Anderson says, on I-10 in Sulphur, troopers stopped a truck driven by 28-year-old Derek Nothnagel of Lake Charles for a traffic violation…:

Anderson says investigators searched the truck and ended up finding about 18 pounds of marijuana in a duffle bag. He says Nothnagel faces numerous charges…:(Nothnagel was fired from his job as a deputy.)

A four-star defensive tackle from Destrehan High School has given a verbal commitment to sign with the LSU Tigers following his senior season. Glen Logan also had sscholarship offers from Alabama and Arkansas. Logan is six-foot-four, 300 pounds and he’s LSU’s 11th commitment in the class of 2016.

It looks like former Pelicans head coach Monty Williams has found a new job. Williams has reportedly been hired to be the top assistant for new Oklahoma City head coach Billy Donovan. Meanwhile, the Pels have reportedly hired Darren Erman as the team’s associate head coach in charge of defense and New Orleans native Robert Pack as the backcourt specialist. Erman served as an assistant with the Celtics last season and Pack was with Oklahoma City.

The Girls Top 28 state basketball tournament is headed back to Hammond. That’s the result of a vote by the LHSAA Executive Committee, which also awarded the boys state basketball tournament to Lake Charles for two more years and Sulphur retains the baseball tournament for another two seasons.

Former LSU quarterback Bert Jones is on the ballot to be inducted into the 2016 College Football Hall of Fame. Former Louisiana Tech football coach and athletic director Maxie Lambright is also on the ballot. Lambright coached the Bulldogs from 167-78, leading Tech to three consecutive Division Two national titles.

She says “Quarry” is the biggest film news to hit the area since a remake of “The Blob” was shot in Abbeville in 1988. Public university leaders are pushing the state legislature to approve a higher education tax credit that’s having trouble getting support in the Louisiana House. University of Louisiana system President Sandra Woodley says the legislation is needed to prevent deep cuts to four and two year colleges…

State Treasurer John Kennedy is concerned some of the 11 revenue generating bills approved by the state House were not passed constitutionally. The 11 House bills would raise approximately $615 million dollars to help deal with the current budget crisis. Five of those bills passed with a simple majority from the House, which Kennedy says makes them unconstitutional…

Kennedy says the state Constitution requires that any new tax, raise in an existing tax, or change of an existing tax exemption receive a two-thirds majority vote from both the House and Senate to become law. He says the legislature is relying on a 1993 attorney general’s opinion that states that a simple majority is required to suspend an existing tax exemption…

However, Kennedy says that opinion misses the mark because it deals with suspending tax exemptions, not scaling them back. The five bills in question are all related to scaling back tax exemptions and credits. Kennedy says the state constitution doesn’t make an exception for partial exemptions…

The NCAA announces the Super Regional Series between LSU and U-L Lafayette will begin at seven PM on Saturday night. ESPN Two will televise the game. Game two will be played Sunday night at either five or six PM. And if Game three is necessary, a game time will be announced at a later time.

The Ragin Cajuns head into the weekend as underdogs, but UL Lafayette won two games in the Houston Regional by scoring multiple runs in the ninth inning to win. The voice of Ragin Cajuns, Jay Walker, says this team has found ways to get it done…

Walker says the Cajuns will bring a young team to Baton Rouge, their top three starting pitchers are freshmen and so is their closer.

The Saints have reportedly signed defensive end Cam Jordan to a five-year, 60-million dollar contract. 33-million dollars are guaranteed. Jordan had seven and a half sacks last season and has 29 for his career.

Today is day two of the mental competency hearing involving Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson. Benson has been in the courtroom both days and told reporters heading into the courtroom yesterday that he feels good.

The Pelicans have reportedly hired defensive specialist Darren Erman as an assistant coach. Erman spent this past season on the Boston Celtics coaching staff. The Pels are also reportedly interested in adding Robert Pack to the staff as well.

Hammond is once again the host site for the girls basketball state championships. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association accepted their bid over Lake Charles. Lake Charles will once again host the boys state basketball championships and Sulphur will host the baseball championships for another two years.

It will be LSU and U-L Lafayette in a super regional series next weekend at Alex Box Stadium. For the second time in three days, the Tigers defeated UNC-Wilmington two to nothing. Jared Poche threw 8.2 innings of shutout baseball and struck out eight. Coach Paul Mainieri on his sophomore left-hander’s performance…

LSU scored its two runs in the 2nd inning. Chris Chinea had an RBI double and Jake Fraley had an RBI single. LSU will now get ready to play the Ragin Cajuns.

UL Lafayette defeated Rice five to two in Houston. The Most Oustanding Player in the Regional, Evan Powell had a two run single in the fifth inning.

Louisiana Tech will have at least seven football games broadcast on national television this fall. Fox Sports One will televise the games against Western Kentucky and Rice.

The 40th playing of the Independence Bowl has been scheduled for Saturday December 26th at 4:45 PM. An ESPN Network will televise the contest. The Indy Bowl is still trying to nail down a title sponsor for the game, after Duck Commander ended its deal with the bowl game.

New Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry has reportedly agreed to a four-year contract with New Orleans. Jake Madison, who writes for Bourbon Street Shots, says Gentry will bring an up tempo style of basketball to the Crescent City…

The National Weather Service says floodwaters draining from Texas and Oklahoma continue to cause rising waters in the Red River in Louisiana. Mario Valverde with NWS in Shreveport says the river is above 30 feet for the first time since 1990 in Shreveport. The Red is expected to crest there Saturday at 34 feet. Valverde says there is already flooding in the area…

He says farmland and parks along the river are already seeing some flooding. Montra Lockwood with NWS in Lake Charles says the Red River is expected to crest at close to 38 feet next Monday in Alexandria. She says this will put the river in a moderate flood category…

She says flooding will mainly impact areas northeast of the river and some homes in the Pineville area could be affected. Valverde says this flooding event will take a while to dissipate…

Here on this first day of the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the Colorado State University forecast team continues to predict activity will be well-below average. Report lead author Dr. Phil Klotzbach says they call for eight named storms, three hurricanes and one major hurricane…:

Klotzbach says their summary is based on the likely development of a strong El Nino event as well as continued unfavorable hurricane formation conditions in the tropical Atlantic. However he says this doesn’t mean there will be no impacts…:

The report also includes the probability of major hurricanes making landfall on US soil. He says for the Gulf Coast from the Florida panhandle to south Texas, there’s about a 15 percent chance for a strike which is about half of the long term average of 30%…:

A recent Gallup Poll shows Louisiana has the third highest obesity rate in the country. The Bayou State’s obesity rate stands at 33-percent, compared to the national average of nearly 28-percent. Pennington Biomedical Research Center Assistant Professor, Dr. Amanda Staiano (STY-ano), says the combination of tasty food and sedentary pastimes contribute to the state’s obesity rate…

The survey lists Baton Rouge as the most obese city in the nation with an obesity rate of nearly 36-percent. Staiano says obesity is a complex issue because it involves the foods we eat and the activity we get, not to mention genetics. She says when healthy options are encouraged, it really makes a difference…

Staiano says Louisiana spends almost $3 billion each year on direct medical costs related to obesity. She says that there is a link between obesity and financial hardship. Staiano adds that if healthier options can be made available to these families, it could help lighten state’s obesity problem…

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says, starting today, anyone who buys a saltwater fishing license could win various prizes including a 22 foot bay boat and trailer.
