With the transfer portal window open, finding a quarterback is a top priority for LSU. The number one player in the portal according to ESPN, former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby reportedly visits with LSU today.  ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the dual-threat Q-B is also considering Texas Tech. Sorsby, who has one year of eligibility left, has thrown for 7,208 yards and 60 touchdowns in his career. He also ran for 580 yards this season. On3.com reports LSU is among the finalists for Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt.

Four Saints players have been ruled out for tomorrow’s regular-season finale at Atlanta. They are receiver Chris Olave, defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd, defensive tackle Bryan Bresee (bre-ZEE) and running back Alvin Kamara. Kamara has not played since November because of knee and ankle injuries. A-K played in a career-low 11 games this season and failed to surpass one-thousand yards from scrimmage for the first time in his career.

 

The Pelicans lost their sixth straight game last night, falling to Portland 122 to 109. Zion Williamson scored 35 points in a losing effort.

Rough game for Louisiana Tech men’s basketball last night as the Bulldogs lost to Middle Tennessee 88 to 51. The 37-point loss, is the largest for the Bulldogs in a Conference USA game. Tech is at Western Kentucky on Sunday.

McNeese improved to four and one in the Southland as the Cowboys defeated Lamar 82 to 70 las night. Today, Nicholls will try to go 5-0 in the Souhtland as the Colonels host East Texas A-and-M at 3 PM at Stopher Gymnasium.

LSU men’s basketball opens SEC play this afternoon against Texas A-and-M, but the Tigers could play this game without their star point guard, DJ Thomas. He’s listed as doubtful. Thomas is eighth in the country in assists and he averages 16 points per game. Tip off is at 3 PM in College Station.

A two-year-old girl continues to fight for her life after she was shot in the head on New Year’s Eve. Baton Rouge Police Lt. L’Jean McKneely says the child was riding in a car with a woman, who saw a man driving a vehicle that belonged to one of her relatives. McKneely says when the woman started following the vehicle, the man exited the vehicle and shot at her car…

A 27-year-old Baton Rouge man was arrested in connection with the shooting of a 2-year-old girl inside a car yesterday afternoon. BRPD Lieutenant L’Jean McKneely says the incident occurred when a woman spotted what she believed was her relative’s stolen vehicle and began following it.

Landrick Ruffin Jr. is facing six counts of attempted first degree murder and illegal use of a weapon after police tracked down the suspect vehicle. McKneely says the child was struck in the head and brought to a local hospital where she is in critical condition.

Ruffin has a prior arrest history including possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, resisting, possession with intent to distribute schedule I narcotics and illegal carrying of weapons

McKneely says this is not the first incident like this he’s seen. He reminds residents to contact police if they locate their stolen vehicle.

Saints linebacker Demario Davis has announced that he will be returning for a 15th NFL season next season. Davis says today’s game allows for longevity that the game of years past didn’t allow for.

Davis says advances in medical science allows players to enjoy longer careers in the NFL.

Cut 7 (13) “…to regenerate faster.”

Not only will 2026 be Davis’ 15th season in the NFL, but it will be his ninth season with the Saints. While this season got off to a rough start, with the team losing eight of its first nine games, the team seems to have turned the corner with Tyler Shough at quarterback, winning four in a row and five of its last seven. Davis says this late season surge has him excited for 2026.

This season, Davis has a career-high 137 tackles, including 63 solo tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. For him to return to New Orleans, he’ll need a new contract with the Saints.

Ole Miss is headed to the Fiesta Bowl to face Miami with a trip to the national championship on the line, but there’s been uncertainty about whether the six LSU assistant coaches on the Rebels’ staff will continue coaching. Tiger Rag Editor Glenn Guilbeau says any hesitation is on the Ole Miss side.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin was not allowed to lead the Rebels playoff run after taking the job in Baton Rouge. He was very vocal about wanting to coach his team, and Guilbeau says he’s stayed involved in Oxford while prepping LSU for the transfer window.

LSU is on the books for any playoff bonuses in Kiffin’s Ole Miss contract and owe him another five-hundred-thousand dollars after the Rebels’ Sugar Bowl win. Guilbeau says the hostility between the two schools is really only from the fanbases.

The Lady Tigers lost their first game of the season after 11th-ranked Kentucky hit a last second three pointer to win 80-78 in LSU’s SEC opener last night. The Lady Tigers were outrebounded 17-to-4 on the offensive glass and coach Kim Mulkey says that was the difference in the game.

Fifth-ranked LSU will have a quick turnaround as they visit No. 12 Vanderbilt Sunday. Mulkey says she needs to see more from her young, talented team as they prepare for a tough beginning to conference play.

LSU will be on the road at Georgia next week before back-to-back top ten matchups with Texas and Oklahoma.

LSU will face Texas A&M tomorrow in their first SEC game of the season. The 12-and-1 Tigers are off to maybe their strongest start under head coach Matt McMahon with a marquee win over SMU and their only loss coming to 12th-ranked Texas Tech. McMahon says conference play will be another level of competition.

The 10-and-3 Aggies are favored at home against LSU thanks to an explosive offense ranked second in the SEC in points and three point percentage. McMahon says their defense is no slouch either.

Yesterday, authorities began enforcing the ban on holding a phone while driving. The new law went into effect last August but until now, officers only issued verbal warnings. The grace period ended with 2025. State Police Trooper Shelby Mayfield says a previous ban has been in place for some time but this new law takes it one step further.

The 2026 legislative session begins in March. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat expects a quiet session after lawmakers in 2025 approved a package of auto insurance reform laws. Some of those measures didn’t go into effect until January 1st, so Pinsonat doesn’t expect Governor Landry to be pushing more insurance reform bills..

The Louisiana Department of Health says the state will receive 208-million dollars through the Rural Health Transportation Program. LDH Secretary Bruce Greenstein (Green-steen) says the goal is to increase access to care and help rural residents with chronic or complex health conditions. He says the funds will help sustain operations and upgrade infrastructure at rural healthcare facilities.

Baton Rouge police arrest a 27-year-old man who shot a two-year-old on New Year’s Eve. Lt. L’Jean McKneely says Landrick Ruffin fired multiple rounds at a vehicle after he was approached by a woman in that vehicle, because the victim suspected that Ruffin was driving a stolen car…

The two-year-old is in critical condition and Ruffin was later arrested and charged with six counts of attempted first degree murder.

The primary election for Louisiana’s U.S. Senate seat is in May and this year certain races including the senate race will have a closed party primary. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says registered no party voters can vote in the closed primaries, but the Secretary of State’s office and the campaigns will need to educate voters…

Several new laws went into effect with the new year that are designed to help lower auto insurance rates. One of the new laws will prohibit drivers that are considered 51-percent or more at fault for a wreck from receiving damages in a  civil lawsuit.

 

The Louisiana Department of Health says the state is getting one of the largest allocations of federal funding through the Rural Health Transportation Program – 208 million dollars. A sellout crowd of more than 68-thousand watched a game for the ages. Ole Miss beat Georgia, 39-34, to win the 2026 Sugar Bowl. Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss says he’s enjoying silencing the team’s naysayers.

Lucas Carneiro kicked a 47-yard field goal with six seconds left to give Ole Miss the lead, with the final margin coming on the ensuing kickoff when a botched lateral by Georgia hit their own end zone pylon for a safety.

Kentucky hits a three-pointer with one second left, and the fifth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team lost to the Wildcats 80 to 78 to begin SEC play last night. Kentucky outrebounded LSU 45-29 and had 18 second-chance points to LSU’s 4. Coach Kim Mulkey says her team was not tough enough.

Receiver Chris Olave will not play in Sunday’s season finale at Atlanta, because of a blood clot in his lung. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Two LSU Tigers have decided they will be returning next season, running back Harlem Berry and safety Dashawn Spears. There was a report that Spears planned on entering the transfer portal, but a couple of hours later it was announced he was staying at LSU.

Tonight is the Sugar Bowl, the winner between Georgia and Ole Miss will play Miami, who upset Ohio State 24-14 last night in the Cotton Bowl.

The fifth ranked LSU women’s basketball team faces its first ranked opponent of the season tonight as they tip off SEC play by hosting 11th ranked Kentucky at 7 PM at the Maravich Center. LSU leads the nation in scoring offense, averaging 108 points per game. Coach Kim Mulkey told WWL Radio the offense has been great, but to be the best they have to be great on defense.

The Cats enter the game ranked first in the country in blocked shots and third in scoring defense.

The Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball team shot 35-percent from the field yesterday and lost to South Alabama 63 to 58 to fall to 3-12 on the season.

Nicholls is 4=0 in the Southland for the first time since 1998 after beating U-T-R-G-V 71-69, Northwestern State lost to Stephen F Austin 74-64, and the Pelicans lost to the Bulls 134-118.

At midnight tonight, fireworks will be popping across Louisiana. State Fire Marshal spokesperson Ken Pastorick says children should be not be involved in the lighting of fireworks and that includes sparklers too…

Pastorick says the best thing to give kids are glow sticks.

The Superdome will host Ole Miss and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl tomorrow night, and the Rebels’ offense will be led by LSU Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis. Weis followed Lane Kiffin to Baton Rouge but agreed to stay on as the offensive play caller for Ole Miss’s playoff run. He says he’s had to balance prepping for Georgia with establishing a new regime at LSU with the transfer window fast approaching.

If you’re planning on ringing in the new year in the French Quarter, there are things you need to know before you go, especially in light of what happened just after we rang in the start of this year. The French Quarter Enhanced Security Zone is re-established, encompassing an area bound by Canal, Royal, St. Ann and Dauphine streets. State Police Trooper Danny Berrincha says when entering that area, the best rule of thumb is to bring as few items with you as possible.

Berrincha says visitors staying in hotels on Bourbon Street should use the entrances on Royal Street or Dauphine Street if possible.

With the exception of emergency purposes, vehicles are prohibited from entering the zone – essentially Bourbon Street and one block in either direction. Glade Bilby, the president of The French Quarter Citizens, says he agrees with that move.

Bilby says in light of what happened at the outset of this year, New Orleans has no other option but to take extra precautions and significantly beef up security to give visitors peace of mind.

As the clock ticks towards midnight, some people will be celebrating the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 by popping fireworks. If you’re among them, there are things you need to know to stay safe. Ken Pastorick with the Office of the State Fire Marshal says when shooting fireworks, make sure you’re in an open area.

Pastorick says never put dry fireworks debris in garbage cans – embers can ignite and start a fire; and if that can is next to your house, you can burn your house down.
