Amazon’s new policy of collecting sales tax in Louisiana has upset a lot of Louisiana residents, including Senator-elect John Kennedy. He says many state lawmakers are dancing at the Capitol because they’ll have more money to spend, at the expense of Louisiana taxpayers.

Louisiana Tech wide receiver Carlos Henderson has decided to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Henderson caught 82 passes for 15-hundred yards and 19 touchdowns this past season.

The Saints return to practice tomorrow to get ready for Sunday’s regular season finale against Atlanta. A victory for the Black and Gold and they’ll avoid a third straight 7-and-9 finish, while a Falcons win will give them a first round bye in the NFC playoffs. The game will kick-off at 3:25.

The Pelicans will try for their third straight win tomorrow night when they host the Los Angeles Clippers. New Orleans beat Dallas 111 to 104 last night. Anthony Davis had 28 points and despite a 12-21 record, the Pels are three games back of Sacramento for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

In college basketball…Louisiana Tech’s Erik McCree has been named the men’s college basketball player of the week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. McCree averaged 24 points in two games last week and had a double-double in a loss to Florida Gulf Coast.

Tomorrow in college hoops action…ULM hosts Grambling State. Both teams are 5-and-7 on the year. And Tulane will host U-C-F to begin play in the American Athletic Conference.

A Denham Springs woman has been arrested for allegedly selling fake driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Denham Springs Police Chief Shannon Womack says the investigation began after an illegal alien was pulled over in a traffic stop on December 20th.

Womack says he got it from 59-year-old Criselda Meraz and after executing a search warrant, she was found to be in possession of over 60 fake IDs.

Environmental groups are raising concerns about a proposed pipeline that would stretch from Calcasieu Parish to St. James Parish and through the Atchafalaya Basin. Director of the Bucket Brigade, Anne Rolfes, says running another pipeline through a senstitive area will negatively affect our drinking water and crawfish harvest…

The Jefferson Davis Sheriff’s Office says they’ve arrested a Houston man after he pointed a gun at another driver on I-10. Chief Deputy Chris Ivey says they also booked 29-year-old Michael Banks on drug possession charges after deputies found marijuana in a package that was wrapped like a Christmas present….

Ivey says Banks told deputies he was heading to New Orleans.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s office has identified a body that was found in the Red River, south of the I-20 bridge. Authorities believe 51-year-old Shelton Audrees of Shreveport was in the water for several days, before a pedestrian spotted his body yesterday.

And the search continues for 75-year-old Howard Poche of Jeanerette. The elderly man has been missing since Christmas morning and foul play is suspected. Officials say blood and a bloody knife were found in his home.

Not everyone is happy with the proposal to install an underground pipeline through the Atchafalaya Basin. The Bayou Bridge Pipeline would run across 11 parishes spanning from Calcasieu to St. James Parish. Director of the environmental group, The Bucket Brigade, Anne Rolfes says Louisiana needs to stop seeing the oil and gas sectors as the only economic engine, as the renewable energy business is booming.

Proponents of the Bayou Bridge Pipeline say it would improve safety, as there is a greater chance for a spill when transporting oil on a truck or train. But Rolfes says these claims of improved safety are bogus.

The pipeline is connected with the highly publicized Dakota Pipeline and the oil companies say the Bayou Bridge Pipeline could boost the state’s economy. A public hearing on the pipeline’s application is set for January 12th. Many Louisianans are struggling with whether to break out their summer attire or more winter gear. Robert Ricks with the National Weather Service says the pattern of hot then cold weather will continue for the next month or so. He says right now, warm air has settled over the Bayou State.

Ricks says unfortunately, unseasonably warm temperatures often come with fog. He says fog is covering much of south Louisiana in the mornings, from Lake Charles to the Mississippi coast.

Officials are once again warning the public about more designer drugs that are making the rounds with a high potential of overdose. East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark says a recent death as been confirmed to be directly related to the use of “Novel Psychoactive or Synthetic Opiod Substances.” He says they aren’t sold locally yet…:

Clark says these drugs are not new, but they are deadly chemical compounds of other drugs designed to exploit temporary loopholes in current laws. He says these chemists who create the opiod-like substances have no regard for public safety…:

Clark says one of these substances is known as “pinky” which is around 7 and a half times more potent than morphine and been associated with numerous fatalities across the US. He says they wanted to make an immediate notification to those in possession of or are considering to use any of these designer drugs…:

The Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence has received a grant from the Allstate Foundation to set up Financial Empowerment Programs in Acadiana and Central Louisiana. Coalition Interim Executive Director Mariah Wineski says financial abuse occurs in 99-percent of domestic violence cases.

Wineski says the money will fund financial education, credit repair, and matched savings programs for domestic violence victims. She says Louisiana received $50-thousand of the grant, which totaled $1.2 million and benefited more than 40 programs across the country.

Wineski says they hope to serve over 500 people at Faith House Acadiana and Safety Net for Abused Persons. She says they are optimistic they will be able to help more victims in Louisiana achieve financial stability in the future.

2016 will be remembered for two significant flood events, one in north Louisiana and the other in south Louisiana, which killed 13 people in August. State Climatologist Barry Keim says the north Louisiana flood event took place between March 7th and 12th. He says between 15 to 25 inches of rain fell…

In August, Keim says the state experienced an unprecedented rain event.  30-thousand people had to be rescued and nearly 150-thousand homes damaged. He says the largest rainfall total was in Livingston parish…

A study from Bankrate-dot-com finds 52-percent of Americans do not plan on using all of their vacation days this year. The report also notes that most of the workers who are not taking all of their vacation days, will have five days or more unused. Catholic High running back Clyde-Edwards Helaire says he remains committed to the LSU Tigers in a message posted on Twitter, but says he’s re-opening his recruitment process. Oklahoma, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State are some of the schools that have offered the three-star prospect.

In college bowl action, Mississippi State barely Miami of Ohio in the St. Petersburg bowl. The Bulldogs blocked a field goal as time expired to preserve a 17=16 win over the Redhawks.

For the third time in four weeks, the kickoff time for a Saints game has been changed. Instead of a noon kickoff, New Orleans and the Atlanta Falcons will kick-off at 3:25 this Sunday. The Falcons need a win to get a first round bye, while New Orleans is trying to at least finish its season with an 8-and-8 record.

Tonight’s Monday night matchup is Dallas versus Detroit. The Lions are trying to win their first division championship in 23 years. We’ll see how much Dak Prescott plays. The Cowboys have already wrapped up home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

The Pelicans continue their five game homestand tonight against Dallas. New Orleans is 0-5 against their foes in the Southwest Division. The Mavs beat the Pels by 10 points about a month ago. Dallas has nine wins on the year, while New Orleans has 11. Tip-off is at 7 Pm.

2016 goes down as a rough year for Louisiana’s agriculture industry. LSU AgCenter economist Kurt Guidry says producers had to deal with two significant flood events and low commodity prices.

Guidry says making the recovery more difficult from the floods is that major crops like corn and soybeans are not going for a high price on the market. He says it’s important for producers to have good yields, because prices are not expected to rebound.

Authorities have identified the 57-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a train in DeSoto Parish on Christmas eve. Her name is Kimberly Anne Stonedale. She’s originally from New Orleans, but moved to Zwolle about a month ago. State Police say the woman walked on the tracks near a church and never looked up, even though the engineer said he sounded the horn.

Pointe Coupee Parish officials say a woman gave birth in a Wal Mart bathroom, then left the infant in a trash can. DCFS is reminding the public about Louisiana’s Safe Haven law which allows mothers to legally relinquish babies under 60 days old to designated facilities. Deputy Director Terri Ricks says the baby will pull through and that’s the positive here….:

According to the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office, Kyandrea Thomas was arrested on Christmas Eve, accused of giving birth in a New Roads Wal-Mart bathroom where she left her baby. Department of Children and Family Services Deputy Director Terri Ricks wants people to know about Louisiana’s Safe Haven law, because abandoning any child at a random location is a serious crime..:

She says under Safe Haven, anyone can legally bring a child up to 60 days old to an employee at a designated facility, and walk away.

A 14-year-old is recovering from a serious gunshot wound in Shreveport, while a 19-year-old has been booked on a charge of illegal use of a weapon. The shooting happened on Christmas Eve. Police say Jarrett Thigpen originally told authorities that someone broke into the home and shot the 14-year-old, but detectives later learned that several males were playing with a hand gun when it discharged and struck the victim.

A family dispute led to the fatal shooting in Jefferson Davis Parish on Christmas Day. Lake Arthur Police say a fight over family property resulted in 41-year-old Ray Brister shooting his 41-year-old cousin, Shaft Francis, in the chest. Francis died at the scene and Brister was charged with manslaughter.

Health professionals say more people have heart attacks in December and January than at any other time of the year due to excessive alcohol, lack of exercise and food consumption. Ochsner Medical Center Cardiologist Doctor Doug Mendoza says increased fluid retention can occur with higher salt content in holiday foods and this can lead to shortness of breath…
