The LSU men’s basketball team looks to snap a two-game losing streak Saturday afternoon when they host Alabama. The Tigers are 1-3 in league play after losing by 30 points to Texas A-and-M on Wednesday night. Coach Johnny Jones is receiving criticism from fans over his team’s poor play, but Jones says there’s still time left in this season to move up the SEC standings…

The Pelicans continue their five-game road trip on Saturday in Chicago with a four o’ clock tipoff against the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls have won four in a row over New Orleans in the series. Both teams might not have their star players, the Pelicans Anthony Davis has a hip injury, while Chicago’s Jimmy Butler has been ill.

Louisiana faces a tough road test on Saturday as they visit Old Dominion. Old Dominion is 4-1 in league play, while the Bulldogs are 3-1.

In the Sun Belt, ULM looks for its first league win when they host Georgia State. The Cajuns host Georgia Southern, who is 3-0 in conference.

Also on Saturday it’s Nicholls at Stehen F Austin and Northwestern hosts Sam Houston State.

Edwards says a special session is needed to avoid major cuts to health care and higher education. State Senator Troy Brown of Ascension Parish said today that he will not resign even though he was convicted for a second time this week on a domestic abuse charge. There has been talk among senators to seek Brown’s expulsion from the upper camber. But in Brown’s statement, he believes that would be an excessive punishment and that only eight states have ever expelled a senator.

A special session is likely next next month, now that the Revenue Estimating Conference has determined the state’s budget shortfall is 313-million dollars. The deficit is the result of lagging tax collections. Economists say the state has been losing jobs monthly since August 2015. House Speaker Taylor Barras says unfortunately, state agencies are in for another round of painful cuts, because the revenue picture is not getting better….

Barras says they also intend to use money from the rainy day fund to also close the budget gap.

State Senator Troy Brown issues a statement that says he will not resign as a result of his recent domestic abuse convictions. There has been talk among senate members about expelling Brown. The lawmaker from Ascension Parish believes that would be a severe punishment, but he’ll respect their wishes.

Long distance runners from across the state and around the state have converged on Baton Rouge for this weekend’s Louisiana marathon. Spokesperson Danny Bourgeois says the course takes runners through downtown, along the Mississippi River, through the LSU campus and historic neighborhoods…

And earlier this afternoon Governor Edwards released a statement regarding the bad budget news. Edwards says a special session will prevent deep budget cuts in the areas of higher education and health care. The governor says he’ll develop a plan with legislative leaders that solves this budget crisis in a responsible way.

Governor John Bel Edwards leaves today for a weeklong trip to Italy where he’ll meet with experts on how to combat human trafficking and he’s also hoping to visit with the Pope. The governor says he will pay out of pocket for himself and his wife to travel to Rome…

Governor John Bel Edwards will be in Rome, Italy for the next few days to discuss ways to fight human trafficking with the Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy. Edwards says the Houston to New Orleans corridor has one of the worst trafficking problems in the country and we must put an end to this. He says the sisters plan to open the Metanoia House, a Louisiana shelter for young victims of sex trade…

State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson and a few state legislators are traveling with the governor. Louisiana has been recognized as the leading state in the fight against sex trafficking. Edwards says Rome is leading the way putting an end to human trafficking and they hope to learn new ways to assist victims.

Edwards is also planning on meeting with Pope Francis next Wednesday. The governor says he will be paying out of pocket for himself and his wife to travel to Rome.

Almost 10,000 people are expected to be in Baton Rouge this weekend for the biggest running event of the year in the state: The Louisiana Marathon. That’s according to spokesman Danny Bourgeois. He says over the last 5 years, they’ve seen runners attend from here and beyond.:

The Quarter Marathon & 5K takes place Saturday morning, then the big event and half marathon begin early Sunday. It all kicks off at the State Capitol. He says one of the coolest things about this event is that it takes the work of over 1000 volunteers to make it happen…:

Four NFL playoff games for Louisiana sports fans to watch this weekend. In the final game of the weekend, former Haughton star Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys host the Green Bay Packers. Dallas beat Green Bay 30-16 back on October 16th. Prescott threw three touchdowns in that game and hopes to use that experience to benefit him on Sunday…

The Packers will not have star wide receiver Jordy Nelson. He’s been ruled out, after taking a hard hit to the ribs in last Sunday’s playoff win over the Giants.

The Pelicans did not have Anthony Davis last night, but they still beat the Brooklyn Nets 104-95. Tyreke Evans stepped up and scored a season-high 29 points and Terrence Jones had a double-double 24 points and 12 rebounds. New Orleans faces the Chicago Bulls Saturday in the Windy City.

Louisiana Tech started a two-game road trip by beating Charlotte 79-73 last night. The Bulldogs are 3-1 in Conference USA and they’ll be at Old Dominion on Saturday.

UNO suffered its first Southland defeat as the Privateers lost to Sam Houston 70-68. Northwestern State knocked off Nicholls State 86 to 81 thanks to Sabri Thompson’s 38 points and Southeastern Louisiana rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat Abilene Christian 56-50. The Lions are 3-2 in league play.

At this hour the Revenue Estimating Conference is meeting and they’ll determine the size of the midyear budget shortfall. Governor John Bel Edwards says the size of the deficit will determine if a special session is needed…:

But Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry says if the deficit is not too large, he believes the governor can make the necessary budget cuts on his own…:

Later today, Governor Edwards along with a delegation from Louisiana that includes State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson will travel to Italy to discuss human trafficking with the Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy, which has a shelter in Louisiana for juvenile victims of human trafficking.

In the past week, Louisiana has seen an increase in the number of flu cases. That’s according to Medical Director state of the Immunization Program Dr. Frank Welch who says four out of every 100 people who visit the doctor have the flu. He says if you got a flu shot, you should be protected…:

Welch says it’s rare, but if you do contract the flu virus after getting a shot, it’s usually a very mild case.

A 44-year-old north Louisiana man is behind bars facing a murder charge after Shreveport police say he was responsible for the death of an 11-month-old boy. Corporal Marcus Hines says Frederick Clark was initally charged with second-degree curelty to a juvenile…

That child, Mar’sharrd Ross, passed away earlier this week and the charges against Clark were upgraded to second-degree murder.

The Saints rallied to beat the San Diego Chargers this past fall and that’s the last trip they’ll take there in quite some time. The Chargers have made the move to Los Angeles, where they’ll eventually play in a new stadium in Inglewood and share the venue with the Rams.

Five members of LSU’s 2017 recruiting class have already enrolled, so they can participate in spring football. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says there are two safeties among this group….Jacoby Stevens and Grant Delpit….

And Ragin Cajuns Coach Mark Hudspeth is a dad again. Hudspeth’s wife Tyla gave birth to his fifth child and Rocky Nash Hudspeth is his fourth son, and the third child he’s had with Tyla.

Pelcians star Anthony Davis is questionable for tonight’s game in Brooklyn. Davis suffered a hip pointer in last Monday’s win over the Knicks, when he was fouled hard and ended up in the seats. Davis has been on a good run lately, as he’s had five straight games of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Louisiana Tech begins a two-game road trip tonight at Charlotte. The Bulldogs are looking to improve to 3-1 in Conference USA play. Tip-off is at 6:00 and the game can be seen on ESPN 3.

UNO looks to remain undefeated in Southland play tonight as the Privateers host Sam Houston State. Northwestern State seeks its first Southland win as the Demons host Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana is at Abilene Christian.

The LSU Tigers are now 1-3 in the SEC after getting blown out by Texas A-and-M last night. LSU hosts Alabama on Saturday and it will be interesting to see what kind of crowd will be there as the fan base is not happy with the team’s play.

Some state lawmakers are calling for Napoleonville Senator Troy Brown to resign immediately after he entered a plea of no contest to domestic violence charges. Senate President John Alario says the Senate has the power to remove Brown from office…:

During his monthly call-in radio show, Governor John Bel Edwards defends himself amid questions about whether he’s pushing higher taxes to solve the state’s budget problems. Edwards says while lawmakers raised $1.5 billion in taxes during last year’s sessions, they also cut $850 million from the state budget…:

Edwards adds more cuts are coming and possibly another special session to resolve a looming $300 million shortfall.

A public hearing is slated for tonight in Baton Rouge to discuss the proposed Bayou Bridge Pipeline which would go through 11 South Louisiana parishes…

A state judge has denied bond for the two individuals arrested in connection with the shooting of state Wildlife and Fisheries Agent Tyler Wheeler. The judge says Amethyst Baird and Jeremy Gullette are a risk to flee and both pose an imminent danger to the community. Wheeler was shot five times last weekend and at last report was responding well to treatment.

The Director of the Louisiana State Police Commission has resigned. Cathy Derbonne submitted her resignation this morning amid speculation she may get fired because of controversial political contributions made by former board emmbers. Derbonne served at that post for eight years.

Louisiana will receive about $18 million as a result of a $4.3 billion Volkswagen settlement, after the company pleaded guilty to cheating on air emissions tests. Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Chuck Brown says the money has to be used a certain way..:

Brown says he’s leaning towards replacing diesel engines in school buses with engines that burn cleaner fuel.

A public hearing takes place tonight regarding a proposed pipeline that would be built across south Louisiana. Environmental groups oppose it, but acting president for the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association Gifford Briggs says pipelines are safe and create jobs….
